Rafa is hitting it quite short on a lot of points. Bashilashvili made a lot of simple errors in the 2nd set to go down 5-2. Worrying signs that Rafa gets tight on breakpoints and closing out the match, against Medvedev in the US Open final he almost got broken back twice when serving it out and now here. Will need to be more clutch against Fedovic. Add to that he's barely had any rest and its looking like Fed and Djoko will be fresher for the Australian Open

I think he’s fine in terms of rest and he should enter AO with the best preparation in years from Abu-Dhabi and ATP Cup. The one thing I’ve noticed today, is that he should hit more flat, like he used to in Davis Cup for example. This court isn’t awarding spin at all.

Yeah, and it also happened twice against Schwartzman in USO R4 last year.

I do think before we read too much into the fact he was hitting the ball short, one must remember this is in the context of his first competitive match of the season.
I'm still confident that apart from Djokovic he should win all the matches in this ATP Cup.

His BH was pretty flat in that match I thought. Thought that's the one thing he did well.

His FH was a bit spinny at times and his serve was a little rusty.

I think his serve will improve and his FH will only improve if he gets more confidence I think.

Very good performance by Rafa! Bar that minor blip that lasted 10 minutes. Basilashvili is the hardest match of his group, will be easy from now till QF.

But am hearing that he's about to enter the doubles now in a dead rubber... WHY? I'd have preferred it if he got some rest.

Edit: Good news, he pulled out of it and let Lopez take his place.

Sounds as though he doesn’t feel he’s had much of a break judging by post match comments....I can’t get up for this ATP Cup - Davis Cup was only 6 weeks ago!!

Francisco Roig summarizes his experience as captain of the Spanish team (in Spanish):

An excerpt from Roig's article:

Translated from Spanish via Google:
Roig: "When Rafa comes [to the team's zone], there is an incredible energy, the ground is almost shaking. He makes his presence felt... it seems like a tsunami is coming. It is true that then he talks a lot, explains and asks."

Rafa's post-RR2 press conference:

Rafa said: “It was a positive victory. I played a very solid match, my serve worked better than the first day. I think I was returning very well from the baseline. I think I played some very good rallies, changing direction better with my forehand down the line.”

Vamos Rafa!!

A clip from Rafa's post-match on-court interview:

The interviewer congratulated Rafa on his wedding (it's not included in the clip above).
Rafa replied, smiling: "2019 was very special for different reasons. After 15 years with my girlfriend, there wasn't a chance that the wedding may not happen." :)

Here's a nice story about our sweet Rafa.

Rafael Nadal has once again shown why he’s one of the most respected athletes in sport.
Rafael Nadal took time to congratulate young Georgian duo Aleksandre Bakshi and Zura Tkemaladze after they earned their first point for their country against Japan. Japan had taken an unassailable lead in the tie with Georgia after winning both of the singles rubbers.
That meant there was nothing to play for in the doubles match.
But Bakshi and Tkemaladze produced an impressive display to beat Toshihide Matsui and Ben McLachlan 6-2 6-4 in 67 minutes.
Bakshi is ranked 867 in the world while Tkemaladze is yet to achieve a ranking.
In comparison, Matsui has been a professional since 2001 and McLachlan has been ranked as high as 18 in the world for doubles.

And before Nadal was due to play for Spain against Uruguay in the evening in Perth, he took some time out to pay respect to Bakshi and Tkemaladze.
Amazon Prime broadcaster Sam Smith revealed: “Two young Georgian guys without any ranking, won the doubles against Japan, totally unexpected.
“Rafa went over to them and said well done in the doubles, he did some selfies with them, he did a video for their families, spent some time talking to them and they were wide-eyed.
“He spent 15-20 minutes of his day with the young guys from Georgia.”
“They couldn’t believe it. [But] that’s Rafa. And that is not an isolated incident.”

Alongside Smith was tennis coach Roger Rasheed and he hailed Nadal’s ability to stay positive and the support team around him.
He said: “Rafa is one of the best at parking whatever is currently happened, moving on and getting on to the next stage.
“That’s what I love about him. There is always a positive and a silver lining to what’s actually just taken place.
“Rafael Maymo (physio) is a sounding board all the time when Rafa’s going through the highs and lows.
“Players in any sport do go through lonely moments. They have their time where there is self-doubt in what they are doing because their expectations are so high. So to have long term confidant’s I think is what makes them great as well.
“It is a big part of the pie that actually sits together and he’s got a remarkable relationship with everyone in his team.
“And it really starts with family because when you look at Rafa’s family, the tight-knit community that they have on that small island and when he’s playing, you see they are all passionately living the same journey.”

So when you play a singles match at ATP cup. Nadal adds about 50 points onto his singles rankings.
What about if he wins a doubles match at ATP cup, does he still gain points for that on his singles rankings or not.
@clayqueen? You seem to know how this tournament works

No. If he wins a double match he will gain points for his double rankings (basically irrelevant lol).

As Sabrina says, he'll gain doubles points for doubles wins same as other tournaments.

I find the the tournament a bit of a haze so I keep searching for clarification. Even the official ATP Tour website doesn't explain it enough.

So how is Rafa playing folks??? Going well for him? What are your thoughts? Are we happy? Has being playing well for months really - more of the same or any particular differences?!

Time difference and too busy with work is killing me!!

The amount of rankings points a player earns for a match win depends on the ranking of the opponent and the round of the result.

Ranking points Rafa earns for a match win over his group stage opponent:
#26 Nikoloz Basilashvili (Georgia) - 50 points
#45 Pablo Cuevas (Uruguay) - 50 p.
#73 Yoshihito Nishioka (Japan) - 25 p. (Scheduled to play on Wednesday)

Not sharp in his first match, but in his 2nd match Rafa proved he's ready to win the AO if he played the AO quarter-final today :)
Forehand now in great form.
And the surface is so slow, its all about the forehand.

I've had a look at the ATP Cup draw and matches remaining.

Spain's QF is likely to come against Austria, while their SF will almost certainly come against Australia.

So a schedule of: Nishioka to Wednesday, flight to Sydney (which has poor air quality), QF vs Thiem on Friday, and SF vs De Minaur on Saturday. Quite demanding.

Facing Thiem and De Minaur on back to back days will be a step up physically from the easier matches Nadal has had to deal with so far, but I guess it's good preparation for the Aus Open.

As for how I analysed the draw:
Spain face the best runner up, and as long as Austria win their 3 matches vs Poland, they are very likely to be the best runner up. They should win both the singles easily, and are favourite for the doubles too (but that's more unpredictable). If it's not Austria, it will be Belgium or France that face Spain in QF.

Thank you.
And yh doubles pretty much meaningless then. Should only play if they need the win

Well, that hasn't happened. #105 Austrian Dennis Novak lost to #448 Pole Kacper Zuk in three. So who else might be the best runner up that would face Spain?

Yeah that was a shock I didn't see coming!

Spain now likely to face Belgium in the QF, unless France can really route South Africa. In the semis they face the winner of Aus vs GBR (aus for sure).
