Translation:

From the vacation days and my subsequent return to training, everything has gone well these weeks. Four days ago I also started training the service and yesterday, after training, I had a little discomfort that was still there today.

We have decided not to travel to Montréal and continue with the training sessions without forcing ourselves. I sincerely thank the tournament director, Eugène and his entire team for the understanding and support they have always shown me and today was no exception.

I hope to play again in Montréal, a tournament that I love and that I have won five times in front of an audience that has always welcomed me with great affection. I have no choice but to be prudent at this point and think about health.

I was starting to suspect he may not be ready when I saw today that he hadn’t left for Canada yet. It’s just not worth pushing it now with the USO in only three weeks time.

Not a good sign that he hasn't healed yet.

If he teared the abdomen again.....

The USO may be in danger now. Let's hope he's being super extra precautionary.

That seems the most likely explanation. Generally, around 6 weeks is what I saw cited as the time required for a tear like this to heal so Montreal was always a best-case scenario and Cincinnati or the US Open itself was always a possibility.
That’s how I see it too. Ideally he would want to be ready to play Cincinnati as he isn’t ready for Montreal. Fingers crossed that can happen which gives him some prep for the USO. If not then there’s the Winston Salem 250 right before the USO.

A little more of an explanation from Rafa here:

“I have been practising for a while now without serving and started with serves 4 days ago. Everything has been going well. However yesterday, after my normal practice, I felt a slight bother on my abdominal and today it was still there,” said Rafael Nadal. “After speaking with my doctor, we prefer to take things in a conservative way and give a few more days before starting to compete. I would like to thank Eugène, the Tournament Director, and all his team for understanding and supporting me and this decision. I am very sad not to finally travel to Montréal. It’s a tournament that I have won 5 times and I love to play there. I seriously hope I can come back there to play in front of the amazing crowds up there.”

I hope it's all precautionary,.

I was starting to worry when I saw pictures yesterday showing he was still in Manacor.

The goal is still to be ready for the US Open.Fingers crossed for the next 3 weeks but I know I'm going to be one nervous wreck until news comes whether or not he will be fit to travel. :(

There's no way he would be playing Cincinnati. He could tear his muscle again. He has to completely stop serving for 2 more weeks, then slowly start again.

Should simply use the first couple of rounds of US Open as warm up.

In any case, it's pretty likely that this issue won't go away anytime soon. It is bound to bother him at the US Open too at some point.

He will definitely play in the US Open but whether he can last 7 matches, is looking unlikely.

Sigh... Unfortunately just part of being a Nadal fan. The roller-coaster continues....
To think that he started the year winning the first 2 slams and I have little doubt he would have won WB if this injury hadn't happened.

Rafa has had an amazing year already, a year that very few have achieved, so I am grateful for that. It is the stuff of dreams what he might have achieved without these injuries.

Hopefully he heals in time for US Open.

What makes you so sure about Cincy?
Only for the sake of some practice, he would be naive enough to risk aggravating his injury (which still hasn't healed after a month) and get ruled out of US Open?

It's like 99% certain that he won't play in 7-10 days time! He would have to serve at full tilt.....Good Luck with that!

What you say actually makes sense.. It is better for him to give it his all in USO even if ends up getting him injured.

He is in good form this year so practice matches are not really necessary. Though my only concern would be seeding. If he misses Cinci there is high chances of him being seeded below Alcaraz meaning he could face Med in SF. I would rather he is seeded 2nd. (I don't expect Zverev to play USO)

I'm not scared of Med. Yeah he had Rafa on the ropes in the AO final, but that comeback wasn't just some miracle or a chokejob: Rafa figured out strategically how to beat Med, in a way that will likely carry over to all their future matchups (unless Med gets miles better at creating his own pace and finishing at the net).

I would back Rafa against Med but still think he is the toughest opponent after Novak in HC for Rafa. Med is a hard worker and will have prepared some counter strategies against Rafa for sure.

We have exactly 3 weeks before the US Open begins and he was still feeling pains last week.

Let's see what happens within the next 10-14 days.
I guess all we can be sure of is his goal will be to play the USO, even if it means he doesn’t get to play the tournaments in the run up to it, although I’m sure he will be hoping that isn’t the case.

I just switched off tennis when I read Rafa's message of his withdrawal from Canada. I only looked at the draw and schedule this morning. Fingers crossed, he won't keep us waiting for too long to see him in action again.

I beg to differ....he is still dealing with the injury that made him withdraw before the semi's. That injury would have been aggravated if he had played on with it.
And he could possibly still miss the USO. It's a risk either way. 2 matches from a wimbledon title or hope you are recovered in time for USO. I'd take my chances with 2 matches from a wimbledon title. If he isn't ready for USO was it worth stopping? Season is over after USO and he'd have been fine by Australia. At this point all that matters for rafa are slams.

And nobody will ever convince me he would have pulled out had Brandon beat nick and no way possible he'd have pulled out had sinner beat djoker AND nick ousted by Brandon.

He played his QF against Fritz without a serve. You really think he could have done the same against first Nick and then Novak and had any chance of winning??

Well, at the end of the day neither you or I are his coaches and/or his medical team. He made his decision, which I 100% support.

No one knows better than Rafa that the clock is ticking on winning slams but he is also wise enough to do what is best for himself in the long run. Rafa's been doing this thing a long time and gone through pain along the way long enough to know when to call it quits.

He may still not be able to make the US Open, or he may go and either lose or win the whole thing. Either way, I will not begrudge him for making the call to retire from the WB Semi's. (y)

Rafa knows best what's good for him.

he turned the serve speed back up in the 5th set I believe. i don't have the stats in front of me but maybe someone else does. and yes he could have beat nick without his top serve. his return game is atrocious. and djoker hadn't played his semi yet when he pulled out.

no big deal I just want to know of others opinions if they think he'd have pulled out if he had Brandon in the semi and djoker was out?

If Novak was out, he may have given it a shot. Though no way he was winning against Novak with the injury. He obviously took the right call whether or not he plays the USO.

I think he will play USO. The back to back matches in masters without a day off doesn't really suit him these days and that is also probably weighing on his decision making.

OK, cool story on how Rafa bonds his fans!!:giggle:
This Rafan in Munich was hunting for an apt for the past 1 1/2 years. Yesterday she saw one she loved. The owners d-in-law is an American who LOVES Rafa too and guess what, the deal swung in her favor!! [she's an Egyptian Muslim who faces casual racism frequently]
Here's the new AC Milan [football team] owner wearing a RAFA Tee!
Let's see if Rafa gets to wear this pre USO Jacket [Vamos Rafa! Heal up SOON!]
