It appears that Rafa played golf today (Sunday), too, but he did at Real Golf de Pedrena located near the city of Santander in northern Spain. I assume that he travelled there to fulfill his contractual obligations towards his sponsor, Banco Sandander (a Spanish multinational bank headquartererd in the city of Santander; it's also Spain's largest bank).

Wikipedia: “Pedreña is a village in the municipality of Marina de Cudeyo, Cantabria, northern Spain. Although located 18 kilometres (11 mi) from Santander by road, it lies on a peninsula only about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) across the bay from Santander."

Rafa met with the family of late Spanish pro golfer Severiano "Seve" Ballesteros in the village of Pedreña where he played golf on Sunday.

Severiano Ballesteros (1957 – 2011) was a World No. 1 golfer and one of the sport's leading figures from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. He was born in the village of Pedreña located in the autonomus community of Cantabria. The airport of Cantabria has been named after him.

S.Ballesteros' children are also nephews of Ana Botin, the president of Banco Santander (Rafa's sponsor).

Rafa was accompanied by Pau Gasol, a Spanish former pro basketballer, who has been Rafa’s friend since Rafa was about 17 years old.

Nice to see Rafa enjoying, golfing, doing sponsorship obligations... But, when will he start playing little tennis? Only 4 months till AO. He can't play on high level at slam without few months of training and playing some matches. Any news on this?

Rafa played golf again today. He participated in a charity golf tournament to benefit the Pau Gasol Foundation, taking place at the Golf Sandander club in Madrid:

Rafa and Spanish most famous former pro basketballer Pau Gasol, who played for many NBA teams and also for the Spanish national basketball team from 2001 to 2021 (retired), have been friends since they met for the first time at a Nike event in Barcelona, when Rafa was 16 -17 years old. In 2018, P.Gasol said he had watched 8 of 11 Rafa's FO final matches from the stands.

P.Gasol attended the 2018 graduation ceremony of the Rafa Nadal School (RNS) in Mallorca. The RNS is situated within Rafa's academy and allows young athletes to combine tennis and studies.

In March 2020, Rafa and Paul Gasol launched the #NuestraMejorVictoria (or #CruzRojaResponde) campaign with the aim of raising funds to fight the pandemic in Spain. The goal was to raise 11 million euros, they surpassed that goal by raising over 14 million euros.

Pau Gasol has been Rafa’s business partner at the TATEL restaurant chain for many years.

All with all, I think it was a very positive interview. The hunger to be back on the tour and compete for the biggest prizes is certainly there. Also I liked that he was positive about possibly playing longer, if his body allowed it and he was filled with energy. I didn’t like the Novak comment though. I agree with him, Novak’s desire (almost obsession) was to break the slam record, while Rafa’s and Rog’s was to win slams for the sake of winning slams. But nonetheless, he should have thought it through, it sounded salty.

Thanks for posting Octo (y)

A translation which is not perfect of course, but good enough.

Nadal: "If I'm competitive and enjoy, why am I going to set limits"

The day after appearing in a media outlet, Movistar+, months after announcing his temporary and indefinite withdrawal from the tennis courts, Rafa Nadal grants AS his first interview in the written press, taking advantage of his participation in the beginning of the academic year of the Alfonso X University in Sabio, with which the tennis player and also this newspaper collaborates. Smiling, wearing a white T-shirt, jeans and a blue jacket, the winner of 22 Grand Slams greets affectionately. "Everything in order?" he asks the editor, before answering a series of questions about his situation and his future, which involves competing again in 2024 if the recovery from his injury in the left iliac psoas is still on track.

"Did the operation (two on hip) go better than expected?"

I don't know. I like to be cautious. They say that everything has gone well, but well, we have already lived many. The reality is that I like to be prudent and wait to see if and when the deadlines that in theory have to be met are met and that everything is fine, I am like everyone who expects it to be. I am referring to the doctors, my team and myself. At the moment, it seems that everything has gone well, but it has been an important operation and the truth is that you have to have a little more patience. I go with lead feet, very slowly trying to assimilate the things we are doing every day.

He returned to training a few weeks ago. Did you do it with the team (Moya, Maymó...)? And how is that return going?

Yes, I am with the team every day, training little tennis, but working a lot in the gym and rehabilitation, many days doing double sessions morning and afternoon. In the morning, more on the track and in the afternoon, a little more aerobic work. In the end it is a time to make an effort, often without seeing immediate results. I know how that works. But trusting that after two months things will change radically and that I will have the opportunity to be able to prepare as I would like for next year.

He always says that it can be improved. Will there be time to do it now?

If I have the ability to train well in full conditions, for me improving is a daily motivation. It doesn't matter how old you are. Although you know that along the way you lose many other things, which is logical for obvious age issues, others must be added. For me, improving is wanting to know what I need to try to be competitive and try to enhance those things that we think can help me to be competitive. Also apply logic, the right decisions about my game, as long as the physique allows it, to try to evolve.

"He has hinted that, if everything went very well, ideally, he could continue playing not only in 2024, but beyond. What minimums do you have to give for that to happen?

Let's see. I think it's going to be my last year. I am quite convinced. Although, at the same time, at this point, at the end of September, I don't know. What can happen? If suddenly things work very well, that physically I feel good, my head usually works. If I feel competitive and enjoy what I do, why am I going to put a limitation? I can't say it 100%. What do I think will be my last year? I say it, I think it will be my last year. What is it going to be 100%? Nor can I guarantee it because things can always happen and I don't want to say one thing 100% and after they say, you said such a thing, because I'm not 100% sure. Now, if I had to bet something, I would say it's my last year.

Would the possibility of playing and not winning be wrong, as was the case at first with Andy Murray when he returned after his retirement attempt?

No, not at all. I have assumed it. That's what it is. I am very aware of it. Right now there is not that in my head, just putting myself in a situation of being able to train and get to a competitive level to be able to play on the circuit. This is my current aim, to go out to a tennis court and feel that I can play competitively. This is the first objective. Then you never know. In the end, I am aware. If I'm just for that, to go out on a track and feel that I'm only going to go out to be minimally competitive, not to make a mess and such, well, I'm not going to play a lot. I will be in the few tournaments that I feel like saying goodbye to. Another thing is that I feel strong and competitive to aspire to things that really excite me, there the approach will be another. But I can't know this right now. I have my different options open and it depends on how I feel, I will apply one or the other. There is also the possibility that I will not recover and will not play again. I hope this is not the case, but you have to be realistic, know about the difficulty you are in today and live it naturally. Always with the thought that there are many years of my career and that many good things have happened to me. Now it's time for this and also without more account frustration.

There are two very important events in his career, the Davis Cup and the Olympic Games. Would you be excited to say goodbye to them playing and, if you are, form a doubles pair with Carlos Alcaraz?

From Davis we are eliminated (Spain fell a few days ago in the group stage of the Finals). It's difficult. If we had qualified, there could have been a minimal option to try to reach the crossings (in November). Once that has happened, that is already ruled out. And about the Games, on a personal level, I would like to play them once again. Everyone knows that I have always been a lover of the Games. I have lived incredible moments of coexistence, of seeing what sport is in essence pure. About the fact of playing doubles with Carlos, I have not had the slightest conversation with him in that sense. But I would also like and it would be a good motivation, one more incentive for me to be able to close my Olympic cycle playing with Carlos, with everything he is achieving, with the young people and with the great future that lies ahead.

You saw the Wimbledon final. What did you think of what Carlos did on grass and against a legend like Djokovic, the most difficult rival in that tournament?

I think Carlos doesn't surprise anything about what he can do. He has been the number one in the world until recently. And although he is very young, right now, practically, the only rival I see him is Djokovic. It is one step above the others. My feeling from outside the circuit is that when he plays, the games usually depend on him 90% of the days. In that sense, I think I am not surprised by what happened at Wimbledon, and that it is not surprising, it means how good Carlos is and in that case everything that the level he has supposes. The reality is that it is fantastic news for sport and for tennis to have someone like him, who is doing what he is doing and, on top of that, with so much time ahead of him.

Speaking of Djokovic, he has escaped a little in terms of Grand Slam titles (24) and it cannot be argued that, in that sense, he is the best, but many people, experts, legends, fans ... still think that you are a better tennis player or better athlete for other things. What do you think?

I think the numbers are the numbers and the statistics are the statistics, and in that sense, I think he has better numbers than mine and that is indisputable. I don't drop any ring nor do I have an ego so big as to try to make up a reality that is not. This is the truth. The rest are tastes, inspiration, sensations that one or the other can transmit to you, that you can like one or the other more. I think that with regard to titles, Djokovic is the best in history and in that there is nothing to discuss. Then, as always, everyone can combine the story at will, say that I have suffered many injuries. Bad luck for me or bad luck that I have had the body in this way. He has had another one and somehow that is also part of the sport. I congratulate you for everything you are achieving and that does not cause me any kind of frustration. I said it when I was the one who won the most Slams, I said it when we were tied and I say it now that I'm going behind. I'm not going to be the one who tries through a personal struggle, wanting to be what I'm not. What is, is and what is not, is not. I say this very satisfied with everything I have done.

Rattie

Legend
Wouldn't it be crazy to see you one day as a coach or have a position related to tennis?

They ask me things about the future that I can't answer, or say one thing or another. Because the future is often uncertain and I don't lose sight of the fact that I have an academy where players come and I like sport in general. I like tennis, so I can't say that I'm not going to drink from that water, that I'm not going to be a coach. I don't see myself making a complete calendar on the circuit, it's practically impossible. Now, a few weeks, being able to help someone or being able to spend some time with a player, so why not tomorrow. Not today, but tomorrow who knows.

"Would it be more like Toni (Nadal) or like Charly (Moyá)?

It would be me and, as always, I would try to take the good things from one, the good things from another and try to copy what I like from people who I think do things well. And all my life I have tried to do a little the same thing. Of all the people I observe, who I have the opportunity to meet or work with them, try to copy the things I like the most.

And how do you think about golf, as a recreational pastime or even with the intention of competing?

Golf has a good thing, which allows you to compete for many years throughout your life. For me, competition is something that I carry innately, that I love and is necessary for my life. However, I am going to take golf as I have always taken it, as a hobby and an escape route.

He says he doesn't meet the conditions to be president of Real Madrid, but he's going to do something at the club, right? Maybe he has already talked about that with Florentino Pérez...

This is something they ask me and I answer it conceptually. Sometimes things are taken out of context by the fact of creating headlines. In the end, all I say is would I like to be president of Madrid? Well, yes, of course I would like to. Without further ado, that does not mean that it will be and it may be that it never tries. First of all, there are people more prepared than me and ahead in that future opportunity when it ends one day, the mandate of the one who has been one of the best presidents we have had in the history of Real Madrid, which is Florentino. In that sense, I think there is no urgency for there to be a new president. From there, when that happens, I conceptually like the sport, I love it. I am a great soccer fan too, a great passionate about Real Madrid as well. If they ask me conceptually, would you like it? Well, yes. That doesn't even mean that I have real options of ever becoming one.

"It's been almost a year since his son Rafael was born. What is the best thing about being a father?

Coming home and seeing the joy of a child when you arrive is something difficult to explain, but it is a unique feeling.

And to finish, in all this time, although he has not been on the courts playing, has the affection of the people continue to come to him?

I have travelled and where I have been, the affection has been great, privately, but very good. I've been to Greece and I didn't know it was so well known there. The reality is that where I have gone has been beautiful and then at the Academy of Manacor, in the end I have many visitors, children every week, and the affection and support is total. Yes, in that sense, I feel totally loved and very grateful to all people for the respect for my situation and also for the support they give me.
