Nadal explains his relationship with Saudi Arabia: “Do we let them continue to do bad things or do we help them?”

The Spaniard, during his interview with AS after the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh, spoke at length about the criticism he has received for his relationship with the Middle Eastern country.

Rafa on the critics about being a new ambassador of sport in Saudi Arabia and accepting the exhibition in Riyadh (interview shared by the journalist @EiadAkk
What do you want? Continue in a bad situation, continue to close the country, with more inequalities? Ultimately, by coming here, we bring in events and tourists, which didn't happen four or five years ago.
Are they paying me to come here? Yes but we must not lose our reason. You come here and what do you think is right or wrong? Because in the end, the only problem is that you get paid for it. Because actually, by coming here, you're helping the country
Here they are still behind compared to the West. In fact, the perspective we see is different from the one they live in. Because at the end of the day, they live, as they have always lived their lives. Change cannot happen 100% overnight because society is not ready for radical change. Because things aren't perfect, and they are not. All I'm saying is it's clear the country has a long road ahead so should we let it continue in a place that's not good or at least do good and help there?
I think all of these things that are happening in the country mean that this change, instead of happening in 50 or 60 years, will happen in a much shorter time frame. I think, despite all the criticism, this is the case. it's worth it. In a way, I accept the criticism.
If things continue as they are after 10 years or if the country is closed, I will definitely say that what I was told was not true. If things aren't perfect yet, but that we help them to develop and the people here are getting better and better, then very good.
I support tourism in this country, without a doubt, because at the end of the day, when people come here. they see "A different world" Like many other colleagues, like most governments around the world, and like most businesses, we are really lucky because we get paid to to come here, and there's no need to hide it.
"Now, the Next Gen Finals, and the women will come to the WTA Finals, and they also earn a lot of money, of course. And me, of everything I earn, when I go back to Spain, I pay 60% in taxes, and that's it. It's not like I'm taking money to another part of the world. I'm getting paid to do a job or a job, but I think it will be a job that is really worth what I do."

Rafa is right! And his critics critisize him just because they use his name to draw attention to themselves. The critics don’t pay attention to the facts that Saudi Arabia’s PIF is a sponsor of both the ATP and WTA; Saudi Arabia will host the Spanish Super Cup (an annual football competition) for the fifth time next January; the Riyadh Season became La Liga’s (men's top pro football division of the Spanish football league) sponsor 2 weeks ago and so on. The critics write articles about Rafa because these articles sell! It means that the critics make money by critisizing Rafa for earning money by doing a job. o_O

Flashback

An Italian guy (who has worked in the tennis media) posted a reminder that Rafa starred in a Shakira music video 14+ years ago:

Wikipedia (exerpts): ¤¤ "Gypsy" is a song by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira. The song was released internationally on 26 March 2010. The Spanish-language version of the song titled "Gitana" was released on 1 March 2010. The Lyrics of the song describe one's life travelling as a "gypsy".
Upon its release, "Gypsy" received generally positive reviews from music critics, many of whom complimented its production. The single was commercially successful. An accompanying music video for the song was directed by Jaume de Laiguana, and stars Spanish professional tennis player Rafael Nadal who portrays Shakira's love interest in the video. The music video also generated a favourable response from critics, and was praised for the chemistry between Shakira and Nadal.
When asked about the reason for starring Nadal in the video, Shakira said she "thought that maybe I needed someone I could in some way identify with. And Rafael Nadal is a person who has been totally committed to his career since he was very young, since he was 17, I believe." ¤¤

Shakira talks about her video with Rafa (Click on Watch on YouTube.):

In 2013, a journalist asked Rafa a question about appearing in Shakira's music video: "How did you show the video to your girlfriend, because it's a pretty sexy video..."
Rafa replied: "No problem. That's part of the job." Between 1:49 - 2:10 in the video:
The interview was filmed on the island of Cozumel in the Mexican Caribbean, at the beach resort complex Rafa co-owns.

In January 2015, Rafa was asked a question: "What do you think is the coolest: being in a Shakira film or having an asteroid named after you? Which one is better?"
Rafa replied: "No doubt it's better to be with Shakira." Between 0:17 - 0:31 in the video:

Rafa and Shakira knew each other before filming the music video. She attended Rafa’s matches and took some pictures with him.

The Six Kings Slam, an Exhibition Tournament in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

TURKI ALALSHIKH’s tweet below reads (Translated from Arabic via Google.):
¤¤ This is the text of a message that Nadal sent me two days ago... Don't believe the malicious rumors... There is a well-known fierce campaign against every star who comes to the Kingdom [of Saudi Arabia] or who loves the Kingdom... And fishing in troubled waters... There are those who do not like the great progress in our dear country from the blessed vision of our inspiring leader... The tournament was a success that angered many and tired many... Don't get carried away by the rumors, and if one of those who came in all the fields did not love us, I would have been the first to confront him... Rafa Nadal has an ambitious and big project for tennis in our country and he will achieve it, God willing... (The message below is from Rafa.)
“Hello your excellency!
This is Rafa Nadal!
I hope you are doing very well!
I want to thank you very much for everything last week!
It was amazing to play in the Riyadh season. Thanks for all the presents and your hospitality at your home!
Thank you very much on behalf of my family, too!
Hope to see you very soon!

Lets be honest, as popular as Rafa is globally, there are those intensely jealous of him and for years there have been false stories about him born from that jealousy ranging from accusations like that French minister made, accusations about his Saudi appearances, claims to have been to his academy and had private chats to his coaching team about Rafa's views, claims about his sexuality, claims about links to sponsors and what balls are used at events linked to those sponsors, and many more such drivel. For any person in any vocation seen as the Greatest in their profession, and there is little doubt now that is how Nadal is perceived globally, with the adulation also comes intense jealousy and hatred and fake stories, it just goes with the territory.
Rafa doesnt need to even explain himself. I was disappointed with the 6 players who went to the 6 Kings Slam, not for political reasons, but i think the format of such an event is a dangerous road to go down, i.e attendance by invitation. I would have liked to see say the 8 most current successful players at slam level participate.
If, and i am pretty sure when, Rafa is President of Real Madrid the jealousy will go into overdrive from those who do not like him.

Rafa is going to open his academy in Saudi Arabia, according to his contract with the Saudi Tennis Federation. I haven't heard he is going to open an academy in Qatar.

Rafa has 2 academies (Mallorca, Kuwait), 3 tennis centres (Mexico, Greece, Hongkong) and the Rafa Nadal Tennis Program in Egypt (at Uppingham Cairo, a branch of a British school for pupils aged 3 – 18.)

Okay one more youngster to add to our non existent list of pros idolising Rafa @weakera . Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, has been hitting the headlines recently...yesterday he fired 27 aces and beat Shapo

Working with Emmanuel Planque, his coach since 2022, he has been able to find his own game and prepare for the tennis of the future. While “GMP” was perhaps sometimes too inclined to build the point based on rallies from the baseline to imitate his favourite Nadal, Planque had to convince him to move towards a two- or three-strike style.

“His idol is Rafael Nadal, so I struggled a bit!… By talking to him more about (Mark) Philippoussis or players like that,” the coach told L’Équipe in October. “Between the image he had of himself and the requirements at the highest level and what he encounters, with the experience he gets when he trains with good players, all in all he’s beginning to understand that Rafa Nadal and his style of play will have to become an old dream.”

“I’ve made it a point of honour for Giovanni to have great technique. I wanted him to be technically sounds and not be hampered by the limitations of his height (…) I didn’t want him to have any big gaps. (…) He has to be able to start early, arrive on time and put a lot of pace into his first shots, whatever the ball. That’s what we want to move towards, because those are also the requirements of modern tennis.”

I think this article in the new York times in 2019 usopen captures the essence of what it was like to have Rafa on tour .

The Endless Intensity of Rafael Nadal

The laser-eyed focus that Nadal has displayed since he joined the professional ranks is starkly evident even on a practice court, even on an off day.

Rafael Nadal enters the court slowly, somberly, every ounce of him emanating stolid focus. He is locked in. One gets the feeling, watching him strut, that if he were to walk into a wall at this moment, it would be the wall that crumbles.
It is a look we see from him often, viewing him on court in a tense match.
But this is not a match. It’s practice.
It’s happening on the grounds of the United States Open, where Nadal has reached the quarterfinals in his drive for his 19th major title. It’s happening at noon on Tuesday, 14 hours after his late-night, four-set win against Marin Cilic — a contest in which he’d played with his hallmark hammering style from the first point to the last.
On Wednesday, Nadal faces the Argentine Diego Schwartzman, whose punishing groundstrokes and court savvy seem prime to produce a marathon fight.

You’d think that on a day like this, an off day, a rest day, Nadal would relax.
Not even close.
He has never let up on a tennis court, whether it’s a final on Arthur Ashe Stadium or a session on Practice Court 5, the last in a row of dedicated warm-up courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, with looming stands constructed so anyone with a general grounds pass can easily view the players preparing for their matches.
No Grand Slam tournament makes it easier to view competitors in this kind of setting. There is also no real corollary at this level of sports. Imagine getting to see the Golden State Warriors run through their paces — working on their zone defense — in the middle of an N.B.A. finals series. Or going to batting practice at Yankee Stadium, only the Yankees are playing an intrasquad game and your ticket lets you sit 20 feet behind home plate.

At the U.S. Open’s practice courts, fans line the fences in deep rows to watch both the lesser-knowns and the biggest stars — from Nadal to Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams to Coco Gauff.
Take in enough of these sessions and it quickly becomes clear that nobody else treats practice with Nadal’s unquenchable seriousness.

Many of the other competitors go through their routines at half to three-quarter speeds. By contrast, Nadal’s pugilism is on full display. It takes just two or three minutes of easy hitting before his groundstrokes begin catapulting off his Babolat racket with a remarkable urgency.
Tuesday afternoon, as is often the case, there is nothing particularly complicated about his routine. He rallies with his coach, Carlos Moya, a former world No. 1, not long ago retired, who struggles mightily to handle Nadal’s pace.
The session lasts an hour. It is mostly Nadal uppercuts, up the gut of the court, and mostly forehands. Fans gasp as they take in the sight of 20 or 30 hard shots struck consecutively without a miss — balls hit all-out, often far harder than he would in a match — the rallies often followed by haymakers hit on the run, slicing against the sideline and out of Moya’s reach.
It’s like this again and again. Nadal simply can’t let up. Mats Wilander, the seven-time Grand Slam champion, on the grounds broadcasting the matches for Eurosport TV, describes the Spaniard’s practice routine as an act of exploration. “In practice, he’s searching constantly for the perfect shot, the perfect forehand,” Wilander says. “It’s like he always need to find it. To feel so comfortable with it that, emotionally, he can take risks” during the thumping stress of the biggest matches.

At the practice complex, top pros occupy each of the adjacent courts. You can see them stealing glances at Nadal, as if comparing their preparation against his. They work hard, but not like this, not with this constancy, this pressing energy. They hit hard, but not like this.

The sound of his shots reverberates through the stands and settles in the ears. It’s like an ax splitting a pine tree. “That sound, that sound, I’m never going to forget it,” says one of the throng of fans, Loreen Beaudry. “It’s just deeper than anyone else makes. The sound of ridiculous power.”
He keeps hitting — booming blows, twirling with copious topspin. He keeps searching.
Here comes a backhand, then another and another, but they are followed by a long series of bolo punch forehands — five, then 12 — which he sends skidding through the air like Max Scherzer fastballs.
He does not smile. He does not look up at the crowd. He is drenched with sweat. His face. His legs. His orange hat. His gray shirt and gray shorts; like he’s walked through a carwash.
But he keeps going. Ten years ago, when he was 23, it would not have been shocking to see him on his toes between rallies during a practice like this, as his coaches scurried to scoop up balls. But time has its way. At 33, adjustments in routine must be made. Now, he moves more methodically as his team of coaches gathers for another round.

But not for long. Moya feeds him a groundstroke, and the hyperkinetic race begins again.
Fifteen minutes left: volleys, but not many.
Ten minutes left: serves, which he crushes to every corner.
And then returns, which, naturally, he also crushes to every corner.
It has now been a solid hour. The pros that were on the other practice courts when he began are mostly gone, but the fans are still there, watching his every move. Nadal speaks to his coaches. He does not exactly look pleased. Maybe the perfect forehand was not there today. Maybe he will have to find it Wednesday, in yet another long, concussive warm-up before his U.S. Open quarterfinal.

Team Rafa in the UIM E1 World Championship

The organizers of the UIM E1 World Championship, the world's first all-electric raceboat championship, announced that its inaugural season (Season 1) has ended (and Team Brady owned by Tom Brady, an American former pro footballer who played in the NFL, was crowned champions). Team Rafa owned by Rafa finished Season 1 in 4th place among 9 teams. Races took place in 5 locations: Jeddah, Venice, Marbella, Monaco and Lake Como (Italy). Rafa attended one of the races – Race 5 held on Lake Como.

The E1 World Championship website describes the competition: “In its debut season [2024], the championship has raced to establish itself as the new playground for the rich and famous. Anchoring in iconic coastal cities around the world such as Jeddah, Venice, Lake Como, Marbella and Monaco, its global appeal has been supercharged by a host of high-profile celebrity team owners, including Will Smith, Rafael Nadal, Tom Brady, Virat Kohli, Steve Aoki, Sergio Perez, Marcelo Claure, Didier Drogba and Marc Anthony.”

Each E1 raceboat has a one-person crew, but each racing team consists of two drivers, a male and a female. The results of both drivers are combined to determine the team’s result. The owners of the teams don’t drive the boats.

The first race of Season 2 will take place in Doha, Qatar, from 21 to 22 February 2025. Rafa has hinted that his team will participate in the championship next year.

Vamos Rafa and his team!

Rafa Nadal Foundation

One children’s tournament ended on Thursday, another started at Rafa’s sports centre / academy.

Rafa’s sports centre/academy hosts the Master Mallorca, the tour-ending finale for the 11th edition of the Rafa Nadal Tour, from 31 October to 3 November. The participants arrived on Thursday, they will start to compete on Friday.

The RN Tour is an annual junior tennis circuit for boys & girls under 16 years old in Spain. The circuit consists of tournaments taking place in different cities across Spain and is divided into three age groups: under-12, under-14 and under-16. The Tour was created by Rafa's foundation in 2014.

Spain's leading insurance company, Mapfre, was the title sponsor of the Tour from 2014 to 2020. Since 2021, the Tour has been sponsored by Banco Sandander, a Spanish multinational bank, which is also Spain's largest bank.

Tournaments have been held in 4 - 10 cities (more than once in some cities) each year. The tour-ending Master has taken place at Rafa's sports centre /academy in Manacor, Mallorca, since 2016.

In 2024, the tournaments have been held in 7 locations: Barcelona, Sevilla, Valldoreix, Telde (on the island of Gran Canaria), Valencia, Madrid and Gijon. The last tournament – the tour-ending Master Mallorca - takes place at Rafa’s sports centre /academy this week. The top seven in the circuit’s ranking in under-12 and under-14 age groups, along with the top six in the under-16 group qualifed for the Master. In addition, the winners of the "Values Trophy" will participate in the tour-ending tournament (two under-12 girls and two under-14 boys). A total of 44 finalists will compete at Rafa’s sports centre /academy.

Carlos Alcaraz won the U-12 and the U-14 title in the 2015 and 2016 Rafa Nadal Tour Master Final, respectively.

Davis Cup

The Spanish national daily sport newspaper MARCA published an interview with Spain’s Davis Cup captain David Ferrer. I post excerpts from the interview (translated from Spanish via Google).

¤¤ David Ferrer is in his second season as captain of the national Davis Cup team. Spain will play in the Final 8 in Malaga (November 19 - 24) that will be Rafael Nadal's official farewell to pro tennis. 'Ferru' speaks with MARCA about the team's chances and the special thing about bringing Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz together in the same team.

Question: When you took over the team, one of your dreams was to have Nadal and Alcaraz, and that dream will come true at the Martín Carpena [the Final 8 venue in Malaga]?
David Ferrer:
At first glance, it seemed difficult because of the different objectives of each player. I am saddened by the fact that Rafa is retiring, but on the other hand, I am particularly excited to share this moment with him and the rest of the Davis Cup team.

Q. As captain, does it give you peace of mind to know that if Nadal doesn't feel ready to play, he'll be the first to step aside?
DF.
Yes, absolutely. I have often got told: “what a mess you've been dealt”. And I reply “no, it's a blessing”. It's true that in the end, I'm the captain and I'm the one who has to decide. I have a lot of confidence in Rafa because I've spent my entire career with him and I know he's honest about whether he sees himself capable of competing or not. My idea after talking to him is that he's ready to play.

Q. After announcing the first list of players at the end of September, you said you expect him [Nadal] to play singles. Have plans changed after the 'Six Kings Slam' in Riyadh?
DF.
I don't know, he is training. I spoke to Rafa on Wednesday, I am also in constant contact with his coach Carlos Moyá and his agent Carlos Costa. They are updating me day by day. I will decide in Malaga [on what match he will play] when I see how he is training. But the same will happen with the rest of the players. If Nadal is training at a good level and is physically fit, he is an option, of course.

Q. When will you make the decision about what his role in the team will be?
DF.
I'll know who's going to play in two or three days before the tie. I usually decide the team three days before the competition and the players know it, so they can prepare themselves mentally. That's always been my way of working. In Malaga, because of Rafa, I can wait a little longer. But I think I'll have it pretty clear two or three days before matches.

Q. The doubles point is often decisive with the new format. Is it your luck that you can make multiple combinations?
DF.
Yes, having Rafa and Carlos, who can play with Marcel, are two very good alternatives. And the fifth player I call up will also have the option of playing doubles.

Q. From what you tell me, you are considering doubles with Granollers and a companion?
DF.
The truth is that I don't know, but my idea is that Marcel will play doubles for sure, yes.

Q. Playing at home, with Alcaraz and Nadal, puts that extra pressure on you to aim to win?
DF.
I think it's always better to have that extra pressure. It's Rafa's last tournament and everyone wants to be there. We are motivated by this and the desire to go as far as possible. It's always better to play at home and with the crowd behind you. Pressure? That's what there is when you play in a competition, and you have to accept it. This is still sport. Winning or not winning is not going to change the players' careers. What will change is that it will be a different year because of what Rafa Nadal represents.¤¤

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering how Rafa’s home area was affected by those horrible floods. Sounds like it certainly was but thankfully, not nearly as devastating as Valencia. Prayers for all of Spain.

Rafa - a Businessman

Rafa tops the Forbes España list of the richest Spanish athletes with a net worth of 310 million euros (about $338 million). But he is not on the list of 100 richest people in Spain; according to EL Mundo (a daily newspaper in Spain) that reported the same net worth in February, he was the 198th richest person in Spain then.
