Davis Cup

15 November, 2024

Malaga was hit by storms and heavy rain on Wednesday, many streets were flooded after exceptionally heavy rainfall.

The video clip in the tweet below shows that the giant tribute banner, reading “Gracias, Rafa” [ = in English: “Thank you, Rafa”], withstood tough weather conditions. The 2,600 square meters banner honoring Rafa is located on the external wall of the athletics stadium across from the Davis Cup Final venue. The banner was installed on Tuesday by the local government along with a company promoting Malaga as a tourist destination.

as far as I know, yes...it's a knockout competition, not round-robin like this week's event in Turin
I forget the davis cup format. first country to win 3 of 5 matches? isn't it like a singles match, doubles, singles, doubles and singles for final if it goes 5?

Rafa is a Huge Inspiration to Iga

The photo in the tweet above was taken during the 2023 Rafa Nadal School graduation ceremony, where Iga was the special guest. The school is situated within Rafa's academy and allows young athletes to combine tennis and studies. The graduates receive the American High School Diploma. The graduates from Spain also receive the Spanish Baccalaureate Degree (necessary to access Spanish universities).
Since 2018, Rafa has invited a successful athlete, whom he has a good relationship, as the special guest to the school's graduation ceremony. The special guest has handed out diplomas and given a speech.

Davis Cup

Pre-tournament interview

Translated from Spanish via Google
RFET, 16 November 2024:
¤¤ Nadal: "The truth is that I want to live this week in whatever way I can”

Rafael Nadal has explained, exclusively, to the official RFET channels his first impressions after his arrival in Malaga to join the Spanish team to play in the 2024 Davis Cup Final 8 that will be his last competition as a professional tennis player.

"More or less, I have been able to make a good preparation, that's why I'm here. You have to look at the day to day, I have not competed for some time and the reality is that I want to live this week in whatever way I can. And in that sense, with the illusion of closing a very beautiful and long stage of my life; living these last moments with illusion, with normality, too, and well, accepting the fact that everything that has a beginning has an end," he said.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner recalled that he has not competed for some time, but is confident in his chances: “I’m going to try to prepare myself in the best way possible to be available to David (Ferrer) and then we’ll see what the captain decides. I want to help in any way, whether it is playing or not, just being here and contributing in any way that I can."

In this sense he insists that: “First, we have to see how I am feeling these days in training, and if I really don’t see myself ready to win the singles, then I'm the first one who will talk to the captain.” Aware of the media expectation that his announcement of his retirement has aroused, he assures that: “I have already told David on many occasions not to make any decision based on the fact that this is my last week as a professional tennis player. The team comes first, and he should not be affected in the slightest by the noise that may be around. He has to do what is best for the team and what he wants.”

Nadal also explained why he chose the Davis Cup to end his career as a tennis player: "I think my first great joy as a professional tennis player was the Davis Cup in 2004. As things turned out, I was given the opportunity to be here when the team qualified in Valencia. I spoke to David and he told me that he was counting on me, and that I would prepare myself as best as I could and then we would see.”

On the chances of lifting the Davis Cup trophy for the last time, he says: "Of course, there are always options, but it’s a difficult surface, because it’s a fast surface. Anything can happen. I’m more than grateful and satisfied with everything that has happened to me during all these years. What I would like, obviously, is for the team to work well and have the chance to win another Davis Cup, whether I’m playing or cheering from the stands.” ¤¤

Rafa many years ago (might be in his book cannot quite remember) said he wanted his final match of his career to be a Davis Cup tie as he loves team sports and also he feels his arrival at the top table of the sport was because of the Davis Cup so nothing in his presser there is of any surprise.
Rafa wants to win the Davis Cup, whether thats as a cheerleader or playing it doesnt matter to him, as long as Spain get the job done as the Team comes before him.
Rafa is acutely aware of the global media circus that will be present given he is largely now seen as the Greatest Male tennis player of all time (noticeable how so many top current players are now saying that) because its his last event so i expect him to actually take a very low profile so as not to distract from the main goal of winning the event. Alcaraz is also fully focussed as we saw this week where he literally played at walking pace at the YEC and lets be honest happily went out early.
Whether Rafa plays on the court or helps behind the scenes, he will play a big role for Spain. This is a big deal, so time to back whoever plays for Spain to get this job done and bring the Davis Cup back home.

Davis Cup

This is a nice article about Rafa’s farewell to pro tennis at the Davis Cup next week:

An excerpt from the article:
¤¤ Rafael Nadal’s impending retirement will loom over the Davis Cup Final 8 from the moment it begins Tuesday in southern Spain.
If that weren’t already obvious, just glance at the banner measuring 28,000 square feet (2,600 square meters) — about half the size of a football field — that wraps around the soccer stadium across the street from the arena hosting the tennis. The blue sign, visible from the highway leaving Malaga’s airport, is marked with large white letters that read, “GRACIAS, RAFA.” Between those two words is an image of Nadal toting a tennis racket in his left hand while wearing one of his trademark sleeveless shirts and his just-as-ever-present headband.
He is shown with his back to the world, walking away, symbolizing the 38-year-old Spaniard’s goodbye to the sport after a remarkable career. ¤¤

So I believe Davis Cup is 2 singles and then double if necessary....Does that mean if a country won the first 2 singles matches they simply don't play the doubles match??

So if Rafa was picked for doubles and Spain won first 2 singles matches then Rafa wouldn't play at all?

Not too familiar with Davis Cup...

Some exho is coming soon??

Babolat has made a new custom bag for Rafa Nadal’s retirement. “Rafa Nadal & Babolat since 1995” “1250 Babolat racquets and 0 broken” 22 Grand Slams. 36 Masters 1000. 23 ATP 500. 10 ATP 250.

Rafa screams from fans
In the combined "Team's area" for BJKC and Davis Cup, almost everyone asks for a photo. Players, coaches, etc. No one is denied. Great Rafa

Condensed match posted by the AO yesterday. WOW I did not remember the match being THIS good. Absolutely absurd stuff from both and not much at all to separate them. Fed played way better than I remembered o_O
Tennis at a different level and its absolutely no surprise to me that now the current players who obviously have taken more time to look back at Federer and Nadal careers now they are not actual rivals on tour are referring to both as the Greatest ever. I said that would happen as its so obvious. I mean look at this match. Then compare and contrast to Sinner v Fritz on Sunday the no.1 and no.4!!
