Oh my, what a journey it has been.

I was a teenager when I started following this young Mallorcan being touted as the next best thing on clay destined to win a grand slam - at least a handful of French Opens they said. No one in their wildest imagination could think this kid will achieve so much and not just on clay but every surface he sets foot on. Two decades and change later, here we are. Rafa's accomplishments are aplenty and above all he will remain immortal in tennis realm. He will not be denied.

I'm also much older now, a middle aged father of three and I still was fist pumping today jumping & biting nails watching him play like back in the day when he was playing ARod in Davis Cup 2004. It's hard to explain the sadness afterwards when tributes started pouring in and realization set in. It is as if a part of myself will be gone.

Thank you for making this journey so damn special! And thank you to this thread and fellow Rafans as well for being such great companions on this journey.

Go easy on them Octo, its been a hard 20 years for them and will be even more frustrating moving forward as all the adulation goes to Rafa from his peers, as we are already actually seeing. Let them do what they need to do. x
No, we always gave respect to Novak main rivals. Bunch of you showed your true colors during the covid bans . Anyhow it was a great journey for the last 20 years with all the twist and turns like in a movie script.

Great thread, thank you octo, cents and everyone else for making this the best Rafa updates aggregator there was. All those times waiting with bated breath on Rafa news it was nice to read everyone else feeling similarly, adding perspective etc.

Rafa proved the doubters, myself included, wrong every step of the way.

wow...what a career, what a legacy, what a stand for values, morals and attitudes.

Rafael Nadal will be the person I will show my son matches to show how to behave on the pitch.

I saw the closed circle for him at the latest with the Australia Open. Everything after that was a bonus and there was even an RG title.

At 38, as he himself says, his body is no longer able to compete. I have to admit that it was painful to see that, like yesterday. There is no such thing as a perfect farewell. If he had resigned after the AO22, RG number 14 would not have come.

So yesterday it was of course a bit of a strange situation. It was a competition and yet everything overshadowed Rafa's impending farewell. I can imagine that he didn't like it at all and I felt kind of sorry for him when he spoke after the double - as if he had to do something now, but his thoughts were more focused on the fact that Spain had just been eliminated.

I can only thank Rafa Nadal for bringing me back to tennis, both in front of the television and on the court. He gave me a sporting role model who gave me good orientation. thank you thank you for that.

I wish Rafa all the best for his future and that he can enjoy his family life without having too many physical limitations.

For me, Rafa is the greatest athlete of all time - a millennium athlete who will never exist again...

And I will remember him as the boy from the small town who was able to realize his dreams and did them with an indescribable passion and authenticity.

gracias

Great post. I agree that in a way AO 2022 really did feel like the conclusion and I remember people remarking that even at the time. I also remember thinking as he struggled his way through the USO 2019 Final that there was no way he had much left in the tank, but of course in true Rafa fashion he managed to pen a few more epic chapters.

Rafa’s Farewell

Tenis España’s (= the Spanish Tennis Federation, RFET) tweet below reads in Spanish:

“Thank you, Rafa. Spanish tennis owes you everything.” (Translated from Spanish via Google.)

Rafa is pictured with President of the Spanish Tennis Federation (Miguel Díaz Román) and President of the ITF (David Haggerty) between 0:25 and 0:26 in the video:

I remember very clearly saying after 2019 US Open final that 'That took a lot out of him - he hasn't much left'......I thought he looked dead......I was wrong of course :)

I can't say I am thrilled with the farewell....Before he even started match I thought it was wrong idea to play him in singles....Overall I suppose it doesn't matter....
