Rafa Nadal Foundation

thinkSPAIN, Nov 4, 2019:
¤¤ Rafa Nadal Foundation opens a help centre for deprived children in Valencia

Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal plans to open a shelter for 'vulnerable' children in Valencia.

Kids from dysfunctional backgrounds, orphans, unaccompanied migrant children, or youngsters whose families cannot afford to feed them will be taken in and given schooling, including remedial educational help, sports facilities and tuition, and plenty of chance to play – all of which is aimed at helping their future integration into society and aid them in mixing with other children, and to learn about responsibility, effort and equality, among other crucial values.

It has taken three months to renovate the council-owned building in the Natzaret neighbourhood of Spain's third-largest city – one of its districts with the highest level of 'social exclusion' in children and adults – for it to be handed over to the Rafa Nadal Foundation to run as a centre for 40 kids.

Renovations have been sponsored by Marcapital, and the shelter is expected to take in its first children by the middle of November.

It will not be a residential centre, but will offer day facilities including meals, hands-on play, and child counselling.

This is the Rafa Nadal Foundation's second centre of its type, aimed at giving residents in a district a second opportunity at life, especially the youth.

The previous one was set up in Palma de Mallorca in 2014 and, after five years of attending to 450 children, is testimony to the success such shelters can achieve.

“Now, the time has come to take a step forward and transfer that experience to Valencia, where we have detected a clear need in a specific neighbourhood,” says María Francisca ('Mery') Perelló, head of strategy and institutional relations – and Rafa Nadal's wife of 17 days.
Mery, who married the tennis star on October 19 in a high-security ceremony at the Sa Fortalesa estate near their birth town of Manacor, Mallorca, works with her new mother-in-law Ana María Parera, who set up the foundation jointly with her son in 2008.

The foundation works largely with deprived children and young people in Spain, but also in India, where a sports academy for boys and girls in an impoverished rural area is among its star projects.

Talent promotion is one of the foundation's pillars, and the others focus on education and integration 'so all children can realise their maximum potential in life, wherever they come from', and helping kids with disabilities. ¤¤

Just hope he comes out of the tournament fully healthy so he can have a normal off-season and training period.

Does anyone know when he’s going to train tomorrow?
If it’s tomorrow afternoon I’ll pop down to O2 and have a watch of his practice session.

@octobrina10 I trust you for any info like this haha

Well said....Really, really don't want him to have to retire mid match or maybe after 1 or 2 matches.....Feel like we have seen this movie a few times yet feels inevitable.....I can't see him doing back to back hardcourt events considering Davis Cup is the following week....

They don't have any public practice courts anymore. They didn't last year either, so you won't get to see anything unfortunately.

I work nearby and went into the O2 during lunch.

Were they not planning on changing to public practice courts for this year?
I had same issue 2 years ago

It worked out perfectly for Rafa, he plays the 2nd Day so he'll end up playing the very last day of the group stage so he can control the semi-final match-ups :)

ATP Finals

Rafa himself tweeted (8+ hours ago):

Translated from Spanish via Google:
Rafa: "Hello everyone. Yesterday [Monday], I had an MRI scan in Mallorca and, despite having a small strain in the right abdominal muscle [ - the muscle is stretched but not torn - ], I will travel to London. On Thursday or Friday, I will start adapting to the service. The idea is to be able to play the ATP World Tour Finals in London. Thanks for the support!"

Vamos Rafa!

Not that I'm aware of. If they had them, I'm sure they would be up already.

Saying that, there is a new 'VIP Village' next to the O2 which looks like it's potentially where they might practice as it's pretty big, but no idea on how access will work as the entrance had fences around it, so clearly not open just yet.

So glad that Rafa's injury seems to be something minor. Having had this type of issue in the past and knowing how his body operates these days makes me feel pretty confident that he knows what he is doing. If he is in London and wanting to give it a go then it is encouraging!

If he will play I will watch every match in full. But only when he is playing.
There is no player that is so exciting to watch, no one can come close. Maybe a AO Fed, Wimbledon wasnt bad either.

Some people are jumping the gun a wee bit. Rafa will start practicing on Thursday in London and HOPES to be recovered well enough to play. Dr Cotorro says that the only shots he'll have trouble with are the serve and the overhead and he'll have to start practicing those slowly and carefully. Those are pretty important shots against such tough competition but Rafa and the doctor both sound optimistic.

Genny SS@genny_ss
Journo: "How is Rafa Nadal?"
Genny SS@genny_ss
Dr.Cotorro: "Fine. I think tests have been somehow positive, as they show the abdominal is strained and I think this allows us to travel to London, practice there and see how the re-adaptation is going till the very last minute to decide on his participation."
Genny SS@genny_ss
Journo: "Are you optimistic?"
Genny SS@genny_ss
Dr.Cotorro:"Taking into account the tests' results & that he's traveling there, we're optimistic. It's an injury we know well, as it happens in tennis quite often, & also know how it evolves. Thus we'll be cautious, carefully advancing step by step & we'll see if things work out"

Couple more quotes from an ATP story:
Genny SS@genny_ss
Dr.Cotorro: "When there's a strain, a contracture appears, which is what happened in Paris. The area must be treated locally w/ anti-inflammatories, deep thermotherapy w/Indiba, which works well, as well as all the manual & adaptation work he'll have to do with his physio Maymo"
Dr.Cotorro: "The most important stage is the re-adaptation to serve. We have to find the day to start it very progressively. This injury allows you to play normally every shot except the serve & the smash. Only for these 2 shots it's necessary to make a progressive re-adaptation"

Tough competition?
Rafa is 11-1 vs. his group.
5-0 vs. Zverev
2-0 vs. Medvedev
4-1 vs. Tsitsipas
Its probably the biggest advantage one man has ever had over a group :)

You're crazy if you think Nadal wants to play these guys indoors though. Outside even he'd have to work his butt off to beat most of them. Djokovic only has to worry about Fed, and he'll probably still beat him.

Medvedev has won his last 2 meetings with Djokovic this year, so looks like Djokovic won't be winning the World Tour Finals.
Medvedev has became a better version of Djokovic, minus the tactical advantage over Rafa :)

And what have Zverev-Tsitsipas-Medvedev done at London to prove they'll beat Rafa?
Rafa has made the Final of the World Tour Finals twice, and beaten the best on that surface.....

Rafa beat Federer in straight sets at 2013 World Tour Finals, and Rafa beat Djokovic in straight sets at 2010 World Tour Finals.
Rafa beat Wawrinka in straight sets at 2013 and 2015 World Tour Finals, and Rafa beat Murray at 2010 and 2015 World Tour Finals.

Also, Moya has made Rafa's game even more suited to indoor hardcourt, so his chances are better than ever whether you like it or not.

Agreed pretty much....Never know with Rafa these days - results are better than ever these days against players other than Fed/Nole....Feel like Fed is due a win against Nole....

Rafa has adapted his game for indoors and he's won more matches indoors and beaten more indoor specialists than any of the players in his group. Yes, indoors is Rafa's least preferred surface, relatively speaking, but it doesn't mean he can lose to anyone on it.

Took the words out of my mouth.

Unless Rafa beats EVERYONE 100% of the time, he is written off.

Yall are about to be real dissappointed lol

Look if Rafa is fit after all then I like his chances. Surely Rafa is not as good indoors as he is outdoors, especially on this slow and low bounce London surface, but aside from Medvedev that is in hot form Rafa is the clear favourite against the other two. No need to be that pessimistic!

I would’ve given Rafa 100% certainty that he would make the final based on form and the players in his group, but I’m afraid this latest injury will hamper him and he won’t be any where close to 100%, I doubt he plays and if he does he’ll probably retire.

Let’s stay optimistic without leaving reality.

If medvedev finds his USO form, he will be very tough to beat. Nadal isnt going to play as well as he did at the USO

Disappointed with the lack of positivity on here. So many of his 'fans' writing him off.
Its difficult to be optimistic when he's always injured at this time of the year. Just when I thought he'll be going into the WTF relatively injury free (and after managing his schedule so carefully), this happens. And it's not even knee or wrist or whatever injury which he often suffers from. Just a random abdomen strain. It's like his body parts randomly give up on him smh

I add that since the beginning of this season, Tomeu Salva is Rafa's 3rd coach (pictured after Rafa won the 2019 Montreal Masters):
