When I visit this thread I really appreciate the efforts of the posters! Anyway I read the May 2 Media Day post with interest, but I don’t understand what was meant here (bolding the part I’m unsure about):

Anyone know what Rafa means about “things being rolled”?
Rafa:
“Barcelona was an important week for me,” Nadal said in a press conference on Sunday. “Without playing my best since the beginning, I was able to be passionate, to stay positive and to accept the challenge to try to win matches without playing my best. I was able to achieve another important title in my career. That’s important for my confidence. I really believe that winning these kinds of tournaments when you are not playing that well can then make a big difference for the next ones. I feel that that was a positive week. Now is another week and I hope to be ready.”

I have seen all of the BIG 3 are relaxed when around people nowadays. I think fans care about the records more than the players themselves....
I'm pretty sure Nadal would be devastated if he had to withdraw from RG with covid, similar to when he withdrew from 2016 RG with the wrist injury.
Nadal's expectations are higher than most fans, because he's aiming for 25 slams, not merely the slam record.
"I would love to finish my career with 25 [GS singles titles], if it's possible....Let's see. I hope to keep produce myself opportunities in the next couple of years."

Spectators in the stands:

Two Spanish football legends - Raul Gonzalez and Iker Casillas - watched the match:

Wikipedia: "Raul Gonzalez is a Spanish football manager and former player who played as a striker. He is the current manager of Real Madrid Castilla. Raul is considered one of the most important players in the history of Real Madrid and regarded as one of the greatest Spanish players of all-time and also one of the best strikers ever."
"Iker Casillas is a Spanish retired professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Casillas is widely regarded to be one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. Having spent the majority of his career at Real Madrid, Casillas is one of the few players to achieve over 1000 professional career matches."

Rafa's dad and his sister were there to support him:

Love his answer to the guy who asked him about missing doing things because of tennis. Rafa says "I have been, I had a lot of parties in my life, no?" You have indeed Rafa, and we've seen the pictures of you dancing on top of the bar to prove it. :p

Legend
Rafael Nadal Named 2021 Laureus Sportsman Of The Year

It is the second time Nadal has won the prestigious award

Rafael Nadal reached the quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open on Thursday, but that was not his only victory of the day. Later in the evening the Spaniard was announced as the 2021 Laureus Sportsman of the Year.

Nadal also claimed the prestigious award in 2011 and was a nominee in 2009, 2014, 2018 and 2020. The other nominees this year were Joshua Cheptegei, Armand Duplantis, Lewis Hamilton, LeBron James and Robert Lewandowski

“I want to say thank you very much from the bottom of my heart to the Laureus Academy. I have had some amazing competitors,” Nadal said. “The rest of the sportsmen probably deserve the trophy the same as me, but this was the year for me and I can’t be happier.

“Winning the French Open and equalling the 20th Grand Slam of Roger Federer has been an unforgettable moment. It means a lot to equal my great rival, but at the same time, my great friend. It’s something very special after all the history we have had together on and off court.

“The pandemic that we are facing is something unprecedented and I want to send a message of support to all the families that have suffered or lost somebody.”

The Spaniard received a message of congratulations from WTA legend Martina Navratilova.

“What can I say to you that hasn't been told to you by countless others? But, for me, watching you play, watching you compete for every point as if it is match point, your total and utter commitment to the sport, your professionalism is off the charts,” Navratilova said. “People will be writing books about you so that they can teach others to do what you have done so well for, now almost 20 years. So, I salute you, I respect you, I love watching you play and I hope you never quit so you can win, maybe 30 Roland Garros titles. Anyway, congratulations.”

Rafa got to meet one of his oldest fans today, 95 year old, Maneula Esteban:

"At the end of the match, after being eliminated in Madrid, Rafa was delighted to meet Manuela in person, who was waiting patiently for him at the exit of the changing rooms. Inside the Caja Mágica, minutes after competing, Nadal spent a beautiful moment with one of his biggest fans. A close chat where both were able to exchange warm words. Nadal met one of the most sincere supporters, contemplating what he represents for many generations of fans. And Manuela, excited simply to see him play, had the pleasure of meeting him in person. A beautiful moment that will be forever recorded in the tournament."

Random, strange question....Would Rafa just hire out a plane to get him across the water from Majorca to Rome? Or would he get on a regular scheduled plane like the rest of us?! I remember seeing a photo of him on a Ryanair flight once but surely with Covid and all that he would be hiring out a private plane, no?!

Rafa's flown commercial a lot longer than other players like Fed and Djokovic. But he's had a private jet since at least 2015. More info:

Think it’s a blessing in disguise for Rafa to get Sinner first round- it’ll be a tough test and a strong base level he’ll have to reach to win. I think we’ll see a different Nadal than the one in Madrid or Monte Carlo tomorrow.

(that said Djokovic beat Sinner then promptly lost to Dan Evans, so who knows)
