Please discuss. Thanks.

Tongue in cheek - and polite from Rafa

Absolute honesty would read something like -
"Of course I'll miss Federer in Madrid," admitted Nadal, who lost thrice to the Swiss player this. "He beat me 3 times on hard court this year - I'd love to take him on here in Madrid on clay"

(That would come across belittling - I imagine it's a lot closer to the truth than the playing-along-with-the-question joke he made!)

The fewer top players playing, the better chance for him to win. Nadal wouldn't missed Nole or any top clay players either if they're not playing Madrid. Nadal prefers the easiest draw as possible, despite know full well that it's better for the tournament and fans when all top players are present.

Literally everyone would prefer to play a bunch of low-ranked, weaponless players in every round if they could - it would mean expending less effort en route to winning a title

Federer reacts to the terrible news:

Really? Some players embraced the challenge, because beating higher ranked players, the sweeter the victory.

I figure players would like to play those they are confident in beating, not necessarily mugs. Federer probably wouldn't have minded playing multiple Roddicks at Wimbledon in 03-07, since he'd know exactly how to beat them. Nadal of the past wouldn't have minded playing multiple Federers at RG. But this year may be different...
