What the hell? The most humble player, the guy that always praises and respects his opponents, the best competitor and fighter, the guy who is nice to everyone, a true role model, is not nominated for the Sportmanship Award???

What the hell is this? How on earth Federer, Ljubicic, Nieminen and Moya showed better sportmanship than Nadal in 2008?

Yet another proof of how much the ATP hates Nadal!!! This is unacceptable!!!

Poor Stefan Edberg, how his award has fallen :-?

Some players do complain about Rafa taking to much time in between points and at the start of matches. off the court he is a great guy, but on the court he does things that bother other players. If anything Nadal does allot of Gamesmenship.

Too many blind Federer worshippers and Nadal haters, what else is new?

Too many posh snobs and sore losers in the atp, they can't accept that Nadal "the clay courter" owns everyone these days.

Nadal is the best man in the world holding a racket and he wins slams on all surfaces plus everyone knows he is classy, so **** these awards coming from posh snobs and sore losers. Nadal is the king.

Yeah things like butt picking, making opponents & umpires always wait until his highness finishes his rituals before coin toss, taking too much time on serve and esp. on important points (which to me is cheating), but yeah offcourt he is fine...well atleast on camera

yes. I agree. **** them all. :)

This award is going down the drain for some time now. The nominee list is silly and that is not a surprise.

He does huge fistpumps on opponet UNFORCED errors, the stalling time before the coin toss (cmon, stop fiddling around with your drinks and play the game) the painful wait between serves..........

yeah things like i don´t apologize after a netcord winner, i blame the hawkeye, i should have won the match, i was unlucky, i was sick, i handed the match to him, it was dark, he is one dimensional, i am not surprised he retired, his timeouts are a joke, i am disappointed with his game even though he beat me again, i like playing him and not only because I always beat him...other than that Federer is fine

lol, a person could go and make dinner and come back and he would still be preparing to serve. :)

emmm Federer also does huge firstpumps when he is in trouble, he did it a lot of times against Nadal, Berdych, Andreev...

Nadal is a classact and has so many good things!! stop whining about meaningless things like bottles and extra 5 seconds, if you are not man enough to deal with that tennis is not your sport!!! tennis is not for wusses!!

wow for the hundreth time my favorite player isnt fed. stop trolling about things you don't understand. extra 5 seconds. wow, how bout 10-15.

i can make arguements about fed too, but it isnt the topic. try reading it helps

Nadal probably tried to psych everyone out by showing up late (it works on court...). Unfortunately for him, he missed the whole ceremony. Oh well, there's always next year.

This is an award not worth having considering their list of recipients. I'm more than sure Rafa could care less about it.

This is pretty much it.

Yes, I'm sure he's a wonderful guy off the court, but he does exhibit some gamesmanship while on it.

Nadal sneers a lot. That's what is hurting his chances at the award.

Nadal the Winner!

nadal is not a nice person, he keeps on making federer unhappy, no? :)

Granted Federer is a great player, but Nadal is a great Sportsman. Do you see Nadal crying after a Grand Slam loss! Sorry...Nadal is a "Champion" on & off the court! Your serve................!

Awww....are you bummed because your Djoker isn't on the list?

From the ATP:

Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award

The player who, throughout the year, conducted himself at the highest level of professionalism and integrity, who competed with his fellow players with the utmost spirit of fairness and who promoted the game through his off-court activities.

Roger Federer

Ivan Ljubicic

Carlos Moya

Jarkko Nieminen
Ljubicic (30 years old) is almost retired as well as Moya (almost 33). Nieminen is gonna turn 28. Maybe they only give the award to players on the verge of retiring :) (either that or they hate youth because they, themselves, are ancient )

roger won the award in 2004 and I believe he was around the same age as nadal is now.

i can't believe this thread.

the Stephan Edberg award to...... "nadal" ???

the other day, we were talking about flying cows, ranas con pelos, chicken with teeth, outer space lemurs... but it was nothing compared to this.
this is frightening.

why? dont you know Nadal is very humble at press conferences and award ceremonies?

Well the ATP is biased and I always felt that. Rafa dares to speak his mind about their "alleged perfectness" & they can't handle that.

Rafa will win a sportsmanship award because he deserves it. It has nothing to do with his famuuz azz or time between points I've also timed him.

A player like Nadal will always breed jealousy amongst other pro players. His whole presence is just "powerful" and therefore threatening. Why can't a player exhibit his enthusiasm with fist pumps? Finally, someone who "feels" his game and doesn't exhibit robot like qualities.

Nadal at the AO final; Nadal always apologising for lucky or net balls; at a match a short while ago he challenged a ball against his favour, for his OPPONENT coz the Umpire wasn't playing ball.

Nadal will win such an award, mark my words, but not from the all time prejudiced.

This dissapoints me. I think he fully deserves to atleast be nominated for the award. I honestly cant think of a more worthy winner amongst the current players but I admit to being partial. Still he exhibits great sportsmanship during his matches and in press conferences, as well as all the work he does for the tour and charity work, so many other things.

I agree. You almost have to be somewhat of a snob to win this like Edberg was.

Edberg a snob? I am surprised you think that. I always thought he was a very humble and classy person. I guess if you meant he lacked personality or flair (I mean in his persona not his tennis) though I understand and agree.

I agree that he fully deserves to be nominated and I'm sure he will one day. Anways, I'm sure he'll be getting the player of the year award, so that should be a bit comforting.

It seems to the public that Nadal is a super nice guy and probably the most humble guy on tour but the lack of a nomination by his peers says there is something we may not be seeing.

HMMMMM I wonder what it is??

I know. The Nadal groupies seem to think that this means that all the ATP players are haters. I just have to laugh. There are a lot of really nice guys on the ATP tour, they didn't vote for Nadal for a reason. Maybe they don't appreciate it when Nadal goes into his huge, elaborate fist-pump routine after they make UFE.

I love how some of the Nad-groupies tried to say that the ATP is jealous of Nadal's looks. LMFAO. Just goes to support my theory that 90% of Nadal fans are adolescent girls.

You are right. You offer a completely clear and unbiased viewpoint. You obviously have a very good handle on the inner workings of the ATP tour. You serve as a very good spokesman for ATP players as a whole. It is obvious to me now that all ATP players were never bitter when Federer beat them, but they are now bitter when Nadal beats them.

I must ask, how do you get such a clear perspective on the mindsets of ATP players when, they are the ones on tour, and you are a chump with a computer?

HAHA pwned!

ouch!

The opinions from previous posters probably have summed up what Nadal's peers feel both on & off the court.

The award is for sportsmanship. Yes maybe Nadal is humble but he does receive complaints about the amount of time he takes between games and points. Some players find that annoying which by definition unsportsman like.

We all knew Macenroe was an absolute - you know what - but many of us still love him. Rafa is one of the great sportsmen of today. Go back to the AO and note his behaviour in that hot furness . No tantrums....and no tears either

Beautiful post. I would add that Rafa hugging Roger after the AO final was the greatest act of sportsmanship that we have seen in the ATP in recent years. What does Rafa have to do to get nominated, kiss him passionately?
Nadal is the one who did the comforting and toned down his victory celebrations to accommodate Roger's sensitivity in their last 3 slam finals now and it's Roger who gets nominated?!! (Nadal even supported Roger's nomination for the prince of Asturias award- he didn't have to) And people still ask what Nadal has done? People are really walking on their heads in that brave new world of the ATP!
