Nadal not playing in Basel

"Hi all, sorry to announce that I won't travel to Basel in Switzerland but after very exhausting weeks I have to regroup my fitness and my body. I will do my best to come back to the Swiss Indoors next year."

Nadal is obviously scared of Delpo after the hammering he got from the tower of Tandil in Shanghai.

I just spoke like a Fed/Djoko troll lol

Seriously, it's a good decision by team RN. Nadal wants to win Paris for the record 6th Masters in a year.

Good. No point in expending so much energy in Basel when there are far more important tournaments coming up after it. Now he needs to ditch all of those pointless exos he plans to play at the end of the year as well.

By the way, if Djokovic is also not playing Basel or Valencia, then Nadal may only need to reach SF at Paris to clinch the YE #1 :)

nadal plans on winning those "meaningless exhos"

Read much? Nadal is playing multiple exos at the end of the season that I think he should skip. Comprehension is your friend, Mike.

I think he's referring to the 'meaningless exhibition' that is the 'World Tour Finals'.

I was actually surprised in the 1st place that he was going to go to Basel. Wouldn't be surprised if he'd skip Paris as well.

What I was trying to say was that the tournament won't suffer much in terms of attendance as it would, if Federer had pulled out, as he is the home star.

the attendance will be less with Nadal not playing. Federer matches will have good crowd like always but the tournament won't be as big without Rafa.
For someone considered Federer's biggest rival, Nadal is pretty popular in Switzerland

True, Roger's matches will always be a packed house, but having Nadal would definitely help, but if the tournament people had to choose between having one of Nadal or Federer, they would always choose the later, as Roger is the most popular tennis player and he also happens to be Swiss. It makes sense, doesn't it?

LOL! No. Basel has always had sold-out crowds, Nadal or no Nadal, and irrespective of Federer oriented matches. Try plying your "**** iz so kute and gr8 and every1 luv him, no?" propaganda elsewhere.

Wonder if this means he will be playing Paris.

Doubt he will be skipping both.

Wow, you really are bitter, aren't you?.

I spent 2 years at Montreux, Switzerland. I know Rafa Nadal is popular with the Swiss fans.

Outside of these forums, people aren't really so bitter about Nadal's 21-10 of Federer, you know.

Nadal is a huge name in the sporting world. Like him or not, the guy's got a huge fan following.

wouldn't it be a laugh if Rafa/**** popped up for the Valencia atp500 instead ?..

Daveeeeeeeeeed Ferrer would NOT be amused.

Great news!

However how come so many people here(myself included) saw he was playing too much? Yet he himself and his team have only come to this decision now? It does make you wonder really. A blind man could see playing all these tournaments was ridiculous!

don't waste your time with her, she is a professionnel troll, she thinks Federer had mononucleose all year in 2008 (even when he won the US open because even sick he's better than the field  ) + in 2013 he also had mononucleose when he lost to Stakhovsky Brands Delbonis and Robredo

thing with skipping Basel and playing Paris is that once again London is right after Paris which is increasingly an untenable situation as far as assuring all the top guys will be there...many will have their final 8 slot and don't want to be wasted the week before...so Basel would have allowed him to have a week in between even though it's the "lesser" of the two (though a very impressive field)...of course it seems like he was planning to play all 3

and as far as Djokovic...is it guaranteed he'll play Paris?...don't forget after Paris and London he has DC finals so he has a lot of tennis still left...the DC will be very emotional I'm sure

He will probably tank Paris like last year to preserve himself for London and DC. And it's not like he is playing Nadal or Murray at DC. He is up against Berdych and Stephanek. Lol! East straight sets victory for him in both matches.

well, I don't think against Berdych it's an automatic easy win...Berdych has played him tough this year in Dubai and winning the clay court match...still, you gain confidence

I see it is 14-2 but they have gotten tougher

I always think Basel should been the kind of the last place on earth to play tournament for Rafa. I never forget what happened to Seles. I see similar kind of danger in Basel towards Rafa. This isnt for all Fed fans i see excatly the same obssesion and physco attitude from Fed fans that used too see from graf fans. Security around Rafa has to be tight no matter where he is and he should never play play Swiss and German tournaments.

Can't we say the same thing about Federer and Djokovic not playing in Madrid, as they could be in danger from obsessive Nadal fans. I mean, we saw how the Madrid crowd treated Djokovic this year. At least Swiss crowd don't act like that.

Be that as it may, on this occasion she's right in a limited sense: Basel would sell out regardless of who played it. Many indoor tournaments sell out, because they tend not to have much capacity. And attending tennis tournaments is more popular in Europe than in North America.

However, of course Basel still needs Nadal to play (albeit less than it needs Federer to play, given that he's the home town guy), because the tournament benefits from higher TV ratings, and TV ratings will definitely be affected by Nadal's withdrawal.

No you cant say that. First off all watch some Fed and Nadal marches played in Spain the only thing you will see is the respect from the crowd towards Fed. Djoko make himself unpopular in Spain with his ugly celebrations after 2011 Madrid final. It is also a fact nobody loves Djoko outside of Serbia anyway,it isnt just a Spain thing.

Of course you can say that about Nadal's rivals playing in Spain. In personality terms, Graf and Nadal are actually much more alike than Graf and Federer.

Or maybe the Spanish crowd hate Novak, because of the beating Nole gave their hero in 2011. They like Federer because he was never able to dish out such a beating to Nadal.

And Novak isn't just popular in Serbia. He is immensely popular in Italy and Asia. Yeah, he isn't as big of a star as Fedal, but he definetely has his legions of fans outside of Serbia and I'm one of them.

Anyway the crowds like players or not.I dont see Novak getting stabbed in Spain from a Rafa fan. Rafa seriously needs to be careful against some physco Fed fans whom are very sad nowadays.

Fortunately, there aren't many fans like Gunther Parche.

Plus, female tennis players are more at risk of that type of violence than are male tennis players.

I was hoping to see the great warrior...such a shame

Anyway, a pity for fans there who were hoping to see him.

Seeing some fans on this forum and others, I wouldn't be so sure.
