Nadal: Olympics bigger than Grand Slams

This is a sensationalist title aimed at stirring things up (usual aim of the media, right?) What Rafa explains in the interview is not that the olympics is more important than the slams but that there is more prestige at winning an event for your country instead of just for yourself, a statement which is much less controversial than the journalist's headline suggests.
In another interview, asked what Rafa would most like to win in the future, he answered "slams", so I doubt very much he either underestimates or despises slams (I think the 6 hour battle vs Djoko at AO speaks for itself in this matter actually).

Oh boy, this place is about to explode. Everyone hold on to you ****ing hats.

I'm still waiting for the day where Federer defeats Rafa in RG, Wimbly, and Olympics final. The tennis world is justified and *******s disappear forever. *sigh

Don't care about Olympics, but if Fed defeats Rafa at W or FO, I may have to start believing that there is a God. :)

Are we talking about the same Nadal who wants slower surfaces, eradication of hard courts, higher nets and the 3-year ranking system among other brilliant ideas?

They all say the same thing after winning each slam: "this one is truly special, the best". Don't read too much into it.
I am sure Rafa said, after winning Wimby, that it was the most special and closest to his heart, blah, blah.

This delegitimatizes everything Nadal has to say more than ever before. OG > slams????????? LOLLLLLLLL . how stupid and idiotic can one person be?

Since the Olympics are bigger than the Grand Slams, Nadal should pull out of RG and Wimbledon in order to focus on winning another Olympic Gold.

Read this earlier this morning. In my opinion, nothing is bigger in tennis than the slams. Ask any young aspiring tennis player what their goal in tennis is. Win Wimbledon, win their home slam, get to #1. Hardly ever hear someone say their tennis goal is to win the Olympics.

Having listened to the interview, in all fairness I didn't catch him actually saying that Olympics are bigger than Slams. He just said that they were more special because you are playing for your country not just for yourself!

I expect the headlines of the article quoted were probably being a tad sensationalist and misleading as someone already pointed out!

True but remember he comes from a country where the people like to watch soccer, so their values are a bit loopy.

Yeah. Not that it would stop the haters.

Thank you for being fair and objective.

'In an interview with Reuters, the 25-year-old said that for him personally the Olympics ranked above the four Grand Slams in prestige.'

Of course, he's the only active player to have won a singles gold medal in the Olympics so he might just be a little biased!

Rafa has single-handedly made the Olympics important for tennis players. A lot of players used to stay away before 2008.

Well if playing for your country is soooo special in tennis as a sport, why Nadal just quit Spain Davis Cup team in order to rest and be ready for the ATP much less important than GS tournaments? Just saying!!!

You have four slams a year, but only one Olympic every four years. As usual, Nadal brings up a very valid point.

That way the Serbian Open is more important than the slams as there's only 1 edition per year compared to 4 majors in the same time span.

Please let's not all get bitter about your Swede boy's invitation to Belgrade getting lost in the mail. The loving family of the top-ranked player set up the event, even though he is not as great as Nadal.

this kinda a thing is what I really don't like about Nadal. He simply says things that he is expected to say (he is trying so hard to be a nice guy, meh) ... he has no brain, at all, he is so fake. He needs other people to think for him ... so sad. wtf is he thinking? well, I guess he can not think at all.

do any of you guys really give a fu.ck about Olimpycs and tennis ... ?

Does anyone have hot pictures of Rafa to post, as long as we're talking about this tremendous handsome athlete?

My Dear Friends,

For your cogitation

Olympics>Major
750>2000
10>16
Clay>Hardcourt
Red>Blue
Kia>Mercedes
Mustard>Ketchup
Knees=Hurt

Nadal must be a patriot, like Hewitt. Hewitt said, after beating Federer in the 2003 DC SF, that winning that match was way better and more important than winning Wimbledon.

If Fedin makes the quarters at Belgrade next year, we might have something to discuss. The Olympic doubles specialism is not a free pass to the upper tiers.

The Olympics is very prestigious, that said Rafa is full of crap.
Reminds me of how in Open Andre said he valued a career slam over the # of slams he won, using the Laver/Emerson analogy. It's just a way to toot your own horn without looking like too much of a egomaniac.

Since the Olympics are bigger than the Grand Slams, Nadal should pull out of RG and Wimbledon in order to focus on winning another Olympic Gold.

In that case he should not bother with Cincinnati as well...
