Hola a todos. Lamentablemente me veo obligado a escribiros esto, pero se confirmaron mis peores presagios y al final la lesión que sufrí en el último entrenamiento en Acapulco antes de comenzar el torneo resulta ser en la misma zona que en Melbourne. No podré jugar en Indian Wells ni Miami y el objetivo ahora es recuperarme para estar a punto para la temporada de tierra batida. Si fue doloroso retirarme en Acapulco donde tantos fans tengo que siempre me apoyan, es también doloroso no estar con mis fans en Estados Unidos en esta gira americana de marzo que siempre ha sido importante. Os echaré de menos pero haré todo lo posible para estar de vuelta en 2019. Muchas gracias.
Hi everyone. Unfortunately, the injury I suffered in Acapulco before starting the tournament is in the same area as the one suffered in Melbourne. I won’t be able to play in Miami or Indian Wells as I need to recover. It was very painful to retire from Acapulco and it’s very hard as well to not play in the USA. I will miss you and I will do everything that’s possible to be back there in 2019. Thank you

I was waiting for this news. If he couldn't heal his wounds in 5 weeks another week wouldn't make a difference.
Speedy recovery, the tour is left with only Federer now and even for Fed fans it must be getting a little boring. Who's Fed's biggest rival now, Cilic? Yeah ok I'll take that.

Not boring yet. Delpo losing at AO was surprising . If Grigor, Pouille , Zverev, Kyrgios can get their acts together we can have nice matches 4R/ QF onwards

It is for me. For as much as anybody complained about Big 4 dominance this is worse IMHO. Now we don't even get the anticipation of those matchups anymore (and they usually delivered).

Dammit!!! Probably my 2 favourite Masters tournaments - they just look brilliant on TV - watching Indian Wells makes me feel like I’m on holidays

What if Nadal isn't healthy enough for clay? We could potentially be without Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka. If I'm Federer, I'm playing clay this year in hopes of a 2nd Roland Garros.

Zverev will not make a QF, not if he meets up with Coric or Verdasco.
But another weak clay season from Nadal w/o a clear favorite could be interesting. Could pave the way for Diego to win a masters and enter top 5? Or Cilic to do well, even tho he's not much on clay? Monfils swan song?

Heard the news. It is really sad, I did say earlier when he pulled out of Acapulco that it is not looking good, he has been injured and pulling out of events since Shanghai. Clay season is going to be absolutely crucial to him now.

He might not be #1 through the whole stretch though. If he loses early enough in IW he'll lose it, and an early loss in Miami wouldn't help either even though Nadal is defending 600 points there. I'm pretty sure there's a way Nadal could be #1 after IW and Miami without playing at all. It might not be likely but it's possible.

Opportunities now for Zverev, Dimitrov, Kyrgios etc to get a big match with Federer in a final assuming he's on his game. Like to see Shapo make some noise. Nadal should be ready with another month to heal.

I'd say crucial is the right word. Clay season and the USO is the bulk of his points, and if history is anything to go by he won't defend his USO title.

Yes, my point exactly. Federer should now have the number one ranking locked until Wimbledon at least, and that is IF Nadal repeats on the clay. Judging by everything he is going through, with his body carrying more and more injuries, that is no easy task, even for the greatest to play on clay.

I really don't get this. Federer is a unique athlete, raised the sport to unprecedented popularity. It will inevitably drop when he's gone because nobody holds a candle to him. But it will still go on.

Yes, his road to confidence is through clay, but I don't think he planned to pull out of the AO and not play at all in IW and Miami. He's always played those events even if he focused mostly on clay.

This will now be 9 tournaments in a row including exhos that he has either withdrawn from or retired halfway through including Basel, Paris, WTF, Abu Dhabi, Brisbane, Australian Open, Acapulco and now Indian Wells and Miami.
His last title came at 2017 Beijing and his last completed tournament at 2017 Shanghai where he lost in the final to Federer. One consolation is that his #2 ranking is fairly secure for the immediate future as no-one below him is close to him in ranking points. Federer's newly reacquired #1 ranking however now seems safely secure.

This is post-Rotterdam. I think Roger sewing up No.1 made him reprioritize his goals.
I'm sure he's carrying some niggles at this age, but we've been through this dog and pony show about inflating injuries in the past to keep expectations low
He is a confidence player and right now he has none basically. Clay is the best surface for him to come back and build it up.
