Nadal Overtake Federer For Most Weeks in Top 2

It seems highly unlikely that Nadal will overtake Federer for most weeks at #1, needs 184 weeks to do that.

However, I think Nadal will overtake Federer for most weeks ranked in the top 2. He needs 52 weeks.

What do you think?

For a moment, I thought you meant weeks at No. 2 and not in top 2.

There is no beating Nadal at No.2 . He is the eternal bridesmaid to Fed and Novak.

To clarify, as of this week,

Federer has spent 302 weeks at #1 and 116 weeks at #2.
Federer was ranked in the top 2 for 346 consecutive weeks.

Nadal has spent 119 weeks at #1 and 248 weeks at #2.
Nadal was ranked in the top 2 for 212 consecutive weeks.

A lot can happen in the next 12 months, however, he's got such a huge advantage over everyone ranked 3rd and lower than he would have to play some absolutely dreadful tennis an go down down really fast for him not to break the record.

Without Federer, Nadal would end up more weeks at #1 than Sampras(285) instead of holding the record for most weeks at #2. Nadal would also have additional 4 years ending #1 which makes a total of 7 years(2005, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 13). That would also break Sampras records(6 years). Had that to be the case, Sampras fans would hate Nadal rather than they are hating Federer ever since.

It's also part of the reason why some Nadal fans doesn't like Federer because he denied Nadal who had to settle for 2nd place.

He'll add to both the total for weeks at #1 and #2 eventually. He has a big lead over Djokovic as of now and the AO only widened that gap, so Nadal will keep adding to his total at #1 for the foreseeable future. It would take a big drop by Nadal during the clay season and a stellar clay court season by Djokovic plus a FO title before it started getting a bit more interesting on this front.

2011 seemed pretty bridesmaidy to me. And Rafa didn't seem to enjoy it all that much.

so 2011 is " eternal bridesmaid " to you ?

Hasnt Nadal been a No 2 for more weeks when Novak has been No 1 than the reverse ?

" eternal bridesmaid " ? no ... if no injury Nadal will be number 1 and Novak number 2 until september, that's 12 months in a row.

And Djokovic has already been number 2 when Nadal number 1 in 2010 and 1st semester 2011 for around 25 weeks.

don't think that's the reason why some Nadal fans don't like Federer, grand slams are more important than number 1 ranking, not sure many fans care about that.

You cannot count your chickens before they hatch. What if a Rosol moment happens at FO ?

And there is nothing wrong with being a bridesmaid. I am sure Ferrer or Berdych would love to be in that position.

************* has comprehension issues. The topic of discussion is not H2H, but who is the greatest No.2 and/or weeks spent in the top 2.

No comprehension issues but on your side. Everybody knows slams are far more important than Weeks at #1, and that Nadal's record in slams against Federer and Djokovic indicates he is a pimp, not a bridesmaid.

I think we need to start the thread when/if he gets close to overtaking him at number 1.lol

Quoted for truth. Nadal fans actually like Federer very much. I've always crossed my fingers that Federer can meet Nadal in whichever tournament they are competing in.

Who the hell wants to be #2? But I get it. You feel bad Stan played great. Just congratulate him and move on to the next event. Alrighty? Thanks.

Most slam titles is the holy grail, but ranking is the second most important criteria. If ranking wasn't so important then there wouldn't be so much discussion about Federer chasing Sampras 285 weeks at #1. Keep in mind the experts put a lot of weight in ranking when determine goat. You know that !

This statistic is just a reflection of the fact that until 2013 Nadal has only been dominant on one surface and at one of the GS tournaments. May Nadal find more continued success off clay so that he can be a real contender for best of his generation, because as it stands you can't be GOAT or whatever you want to call it when you only rule 1 of 4 GS tournaments.

Quality second post amigo. Agreed.

How many weeks do folks think Nadal will stay at #1? As of now, I think he'll keep #1 at the end of 2014, but we'll see if someone can take the top spot. I suppose Djokovic, perhaps Murray if he regains his earlier form, and now suprisingly Wawrinka have the best chance, but I'll take Nadal as far as that goes.

to be honest, Federer overtaking the 285 weeks of Sampras was the icing on the cake, but he was GOAT already before that (he had 16 GS at the time). That was just another record for Federer, a bonus.

Being #2 in the rankings is based on averaging all points.

When Fed racked up most of his Weeks at #1, Nadal was too young. Federer, in comparison, had achieved zilch by age 21.

As for Djokovic, nobody can contest his 2011 dominance, which was unbelievable. He got additional weeks at #1 due to Nadal being out injured for 7 months.

And now, the really important statistic: What is the combined slam H2H between Nadal and Federer/Djokovic?

Until US open no doubt. Until the end of the year would be great though but it's gonna be tough, depends on Djokovic too of course.

If Nadal doesn't get injured, I think Nadal has the best chance. He has 3710 points over Djokovic, which is a boatload of points (almost 2 slams worth).
