"After two days of training in Rio alongside his compatriot David Ferrer, Nadal told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope on Wednesday: “It’s evident that the condition of my wrist is not ideal and if it wasn’t the Olympics, I would not take this risk. However, having spoken to my team and with Conchita [Martínez], I’ve decided to play the singles and everything else."

Okay. But wasn't that also more or less the case before the French? He had to stop after around 3 hours of match play back then. So perhaps he could have managed the risk differently. The schedule is packed in 9 days. IMO he could have chosen to drop one of the doubles events.

Anyway, hope he bags a medal somehow. Otherwise I feel we are in for a rather tame week of tennis.

lmao the guy wants to end his career now and end up handicapped in the future.

Great idea to play all events when the wrist is not fully healed.

Btw depending on his opponent I recommend betting against him in the first rounds. The mind wants to succeed but the body can say "no mas" at any time.

this is what I don't get about Nadal. Who cares about the Olympics, make sure your damn wrist is 100%..he should be looking to being in tip top shape to win the FO next year and challenge at the USO/AO not the olympics which he's already won.

How do you all know what shape Nadals wrist is in? For all we know it's almost 100% or perhaps the doctor said it is unlikely that it will get aggravated.

I've had wrist injuries...they are not to be taken lightly and they don't go away quickly and are very dangerous for tennis players, especially Nadal. Wasn't he unable to practice just a few days ago because of the pain?

I fear for him. he must have gotten dexamethasone injection in his wrist.....short term he can play but long term his wrist may permanently injured and may force him to retire this year.

According to "sources" from randoms. Supposedly he also breadsticked Murray. But I doubt he would be playing Rio if he was unable to play a few days ago. That would be beyond stupid. Nadal please tell me that's not so.

woe is wristdal.

the wrist will be destroyed just carrying the Spanish flag for ages at the opening ceremony.

This is what happens when people take gossip at face value, instead of actually looking at the source. All that was reported was he stopped practice to ice his wrist. Of course the tweet was trying to make drama, because it seems his practice was just over, since he had another 2hr practice later the same day.

that steroid injection will ward off the pain for couple of weeks. Rafa will most likely have to skip the US open now. there are limit of 2 injections into that wrist, no more after that for 6 month.

It's good for the event! Hoping for a Djokovic - Nadal final now that Federer is out. Imagine if Nadal wins it, then his fan base can claim that he will have the double golden career slam if he wins AO one more time ;)

He sure isn't going to cause any damage in singles, but hopefully this decision won't backfire at him in the near future. Nadal playing is pretty much always nice to see.

Well Dr. Cotorro is with him in Rio so he knows better than all the people here.
Vamos Rafa!
THIS... lol... the man is a professional athlete. He would NOT play if:

-he wasn't given the okay and cleared by doctor
-he didn't fill fit to play due to lack of recovery from injury

The dude is not stupid... I cannot say that about some posters here though.

It does seem strange that he would want to put his fragile wrist at risk by trying to play all the tennis events. On the other hand, maybe he just wants to go all out and go for broke in what will almost certainly be his last Olympics. Just hope it doesn't knock him out for the rest of the season.

Yeah, the Olympics are the thing that is preferable over the rest of his career.

Seems reasonable.

I am hoping for Djokovic v Nadal semi or final. It would be great to see them go at it one last time at the Olympics. :)

It must be in better shape than at the French one would think. There's no way he would've pulled out of that one unless he had to. It's been quite some time since then. One assumes he has taken medical advice from experts (I know in the UK of late it's been shown that most people don't seem too keen on experts but I think they know what they're talking about) which is probably better advice than a couple of people on internet forums who've hurt their wrist before, and maybe the risks aren't that great. I hope that is the case, it'll be nice to see him back.

I wanna see Nadal play with Muguruza. Should be fun. Might have a decent shot at winning. Who are the other strong mixed pairings this year?

Mixed doubles partners will be determined in Rio on Aug 9 (according to the ITF rules). The Spanish Tennis Federation & their Olympic Committee have nominated teams: Rafa/Muguruza and Ferru/Carla Suarez.
