Nadal says injuries leave him in pain 'every single day'

An interaction with a reporter laid bare the toll a 21-year career has taken on Rafael Nadal's body, as the Spanish tennis star said he endures pain "every single day."
After his round of 16 win over David Goffin -- which was decided by a mammoth third-set tiebreaker -- Nadal limped into his post-match press conference, prompting a journalist to ask him about his apparent discomfort.

"When I play, sometimes my foot pains me. If you see me every single day, you wouldn't be worried. I always have pain in my foot, especially after playing a three-hour match or a long training. I end up walking a little bit badly.

"But I have a chronic injury which has no treatment. That's part of my life, and that's the downside of not being able to finish the match earlier. In the short term, I think I am fine, physically speaking, but also, speaking about my feet, it has to adapt to competition. It has to adapt to the stress that matches like today have on me.

"In the short therm, as I said, it's fine, but I'm also conscious for tomorrow. It's a little bit more complicated because tomorrow I can wake up with more problems and we have to accept it and face it."

Nadal has been blighted by injuries throughout his career and is only just returning from a rib injury suffered at Indian Wells in March, which at one point looked like it may threaten his participation in the upcoming French Open.
Last year alone, Nadal suffered from a back injury at the start of the season and was then forced to miss the second half of 2021 with a foot injury. That time out meant he was unable to compete at Wimbledon and the Olympics.

It can't be that much pain if he wins grand slams with multiple mammoth 5 set matches. He actually looked more comfortable against Medvedev the longer the match went on. I don't buy this nonsense that he's in so much pain.
Mental mind games are huge in tennis for some players and Rafa's been successful being "injured" his entire career. Just as he always downplays his chances and denigrates his form before almost every event. Again we'll hear before RG this year, "I'm not one of the favorites, no? I gonna try my best, but lots of great players, I just gonna try my best." Two weeks later, he inevitably holds the trophy.

Hey, it's worked for Nadal for 17 years, never change a winning strategy.

Well, good thing he didn't say anything about 'so much pain' that you have to buy then, right? Christ, marathon runners endure pain literally every time they run a marathon. It hurts, they fight through it. People making a big deal out of this are hysterical.

Martina Navratilova played with two very bad knees in the late 1980's until she got bilateral arthroscopic knee surgery (helps explain why she beat Graf 1991 USO post-surgery). Laver played with Lumbar and Cervical herniations and bulges in his final years and the list goes on. Nadal was serving, volleying, and moving quite well early this year when he went 20-0. I think if he wins either FO or WImbledon (3rd surface slam) then he should do a Sampras (retire on top) and think about quitting if he is in so much pain. Ahora es el momento para tener una familia Y niños pequeños

Graf had a shoulder injury during the summer 1991 and only played the Fed Up on red clay in July before the US Open. Even had to hit some double handed backhands vs Hy-Boulais! However it’s true that Navratilova had displayed a very high level during that tournament!

You underestimate the fighting spirit of alphas who are borderline masochists or at least have a far higher tolerance for pain than us average people.

These silly conspiracy theories that he is making up injuries will continue as long as people fail to understand what a FANATIC Nadal is. He would crawl on all fours to play, if winning that way were possible.

Graf did show major grit by winning Wimbledon in that Summer of 1991 and then NOT losing a set in the USO until she reached Martina who was 13 years older. I had this very conservation with another TTW member who called me some very bad words in a different thread. I give you credit for keeping it civil.

Is Nadal an alpha male?

No rational person does. It’s ridiculous. Remember when he said he thought he had a broken foot against Delpo at Wimbledon? Either he’s a massive hypochondriac or the team just makes things up for psychological advantage.

Once again, TTW never fails with its high level of reading comprehension.

A. He won the match (v. Goffin)
B. He came into the presser limping (Did he fake that?)
C. The limping prompted the question
D. He answered the question honestly. (Did/does he exaggerate? No idea. Does he appear to be someone with a high pain threshold and a huge will to win? Does that need to be answered.)

The people who criticize (slack given to those who do so with humor...one so far on this thread)... are the ones who criticize everything and are sarcastic about "moral victories". As I have always stated, which is obvious, injuries are a part of the game. Rafa knows that better than any of us.

Nadal talks about his injuries too much. Some people are tired of hearing that stuff.

he might have a very low pain threshold and go on about things other players just play through without whining

Neither do I. IF so, then he must be taking lots of strong pain killers which is not healthy.

I'm so sick of hearing defences like this. He's in constant pain yet wins slams and performs well in most tournaments he plays but when he loses it's the reason he lost? Get out of here. Also lots of players who push their body hard during a match will have tight muscles at the end of it, that's what an ice bath and massages are for and him limping into the press conference means nothing to a player of his calibre with an entire team dedicated to healing him. Lots of players push themselves hard or through niggling pain to win, it's not a Nadal-specific thing but he seems to be the only one who whines about it.

Maybe the media are partly to blame for encouraging it and asking the questions but Nadal nor his team barely ever try and play it down. Even when the media claims he plays it down, if you actually listen to his words he throws gasoline on the hints with stuff like "I'm feeling fine but at the end of the set I had some pain and swelling in my foot" so defenders can act like he isn't making excuses but there is enough there for him to save face and blame the injury if he loses.
