Nadal should cut his schedule for the clay season

I was curious about his schedule for this season and looked it up, turns out he’s playing the full clay season again. I don’t think that’s a great choice. He was clearly gassed during RG last year.
April 11 -18: Monte-Carlo Masters, Monaco

April 19 -25: Barcelona Open, Spain

MAY:

May 2 – 9: Madrid Open, Spain

May 9 – 16: Internazionali BNL d’Italia, Rome, Italy

May 30 – June 13: Roland Garros, Paris, France

I think he should cut Monte Carlo and Madrid personally. He won’t skip Barcelona because you can’t skip a tournament that named it’s god damn arena after you. That would just be rude.

I actually agree with this. He overplayed last year and hurt his chances at RG. Barca and Rome is moar than enough to get ready. At the very least skip Madrid since it plays nothing like Paris.

As rude as bending the rules of the game to your favor?

What if he suffers an injury that prevents him from playing clay season.

Isn't that his typical routine?

Do you think he's competing with Djokovic for most masters? That can only explain the number of tournaments he's playing. Although that begs the question why he's playing Barcelona which is an ATP500.

He should follow his own advice "I'm not 21 years old anymore". Cut the schedule or he won't be able to play the rest of the year.

He has his own affinity with Barca I think. The organizers there even made their center court his name.

I think his schedule should be following-:

Acapulco
Miami
Monte carlo
Barcelona
Rome
Rg
Wimbledon
Canada
Us open
Laver cup
Paris masters
WTF
This looks perfect and spaced out. I think Madrid he should skip as 2 tournaments before Rg aren't needed. Mc, Barcelona are enough to tell where is the level on clay and rome can be used to fix all issues and reach peak for Rg. Rest post Us open only play indoors

the lack of indian wells in the schedule is kinda surprising though, i guess it's provisional?
I think sunshine double is pointless at this stage un career as that leg is as useless as Asian swing since it's not linked to any slam. So if have to play one of them then miami is best for Rafa as hasn't won there

Not sure about that. Yes, he hasn't won it but should he really care instead of getting some rest&relaxation before the usually intense clay-court season?

I agree he should play less on clay, but he wasn't "gassed" at RG, he was injured in the foot.

Barcelona
Belgrade 1
Madrid (Real will likely be lifting the league title around then, Rafa is diehard Madridista so he has to be there)
Belgrade 2
RG

This way he will get two chances to play the only opponent he has to worry about in the entire world. I wish top players would face off in lower tournaments like the old days.

After this two -week run in Melbourne, I would not be surprised if he did cut two of these 4. My guess is the schedule was there, thinking he might make an early exit at the Aussie.

ATP if it wasn't so corrupt would make it mandatory to play at least one 250 for every top 10 player

They complain how tennis lacks popularity and then focus the best players to play in slams and masters only(and they appear in a few 500 for huge appearance fees)

How are these small tournaments supposed to make any money?

When he was much younger, Nadal would really want to win all those clay events, or at least all but one of them. In more recent years, he's content with winning the French Open and just one of the others.

As I posted on the Nadal news thread, I think he should skip MC and go to Barca. Get an extra week off and not have to worry about back to back weeks coming into the clay season. This way, if he is stubborn about Madrid (which he'd also be better off not playing but it's in his home country), then it's less bad because he'll probably lose before the SFs there anyway
