Nadal skips Shanghai

Because Djokovic got out EARLY in the UsOpen.
Also because he has less mileage, less wear/tear and potentially 3+ years at the top - so he can play more than Fedal.
He can chase #1 ranking and play these mickey mouse tournaments.
What Djokovic wants is to get close to Fed #1 weeks and then win more slams than Fed to be the GOAT.

For Nadal, he is getting closer to his expiration. It is imperative for Rafa to win as many slams as he can. So that he can put distance between him and Novak, and get closer (or ahead of Fed).
Nadal's GOAT claim is based on slams alone. He can't compete for Week at #1 because he lags behind Fedovic considerably. But if somehow, Nadal won more slams than Fed and Novak, he could be the putative GOAT.

Nadal's team is FINALLY making the right decisions. He did a great job skipping Shanghai. Rightfully, his focus should be next year at the A.O and the F.O. Even playing Davis cup would not be very smart.
Premeditated vulturing; schedule set in June.

Your comment demonstrates your dishonesty. Your want Djoko to end the year as the world No 1 and, actually, that's the reason you don't want Rafa to play at the end of the year.

Nadal prefers to play Masters tournaments where Federer and Djokovic are absent like Canada. I mean no Federer and Djokovic is basically the only way he can still win anything at this point.
Fed & Djoko withdrew from the 2019 Montreal Masters:

Are you serious? I don't WANT Novak to end as world #1 - I just said that Novak is chasing the #1 because he wants to get after Roger's #1 weeks record.
I'm trying to put a hypothesis on why Nadal is NOT chasing the world #1. His team and he are smart enough to know that he has to maximize slams as he gets older.
In the article you put on the other thread, Nadal says the same thing:

"With my age and with my goals," Nadal said in New York, "I cannot lose energy or time to follow [chase] the No. 1 ranking. I need to think about my career in a different way."
