Rafael Nadal's coach and uncle Toni Nadal has announced his split from the 14-time Grand Slam champion, according to reports.

Toni Nadal has said he will no longer accompany the tennis great on tour, complaining that he is being shut out of decision-making.

"From next year I will no longer follow Rafael on the circuit and I will focus exclusively on our (tennis) academy," he was quoted as saying on tennisitaliano.it.
Nadal's spokesman Benito Perez told AFP the decision was unexpected.

"These words took us somewhat by surprise. If he said that, then it means just that. I will speak to Rafa about it in the coming days. I don't think we will be immediately communicating on this subject," he said.

Nadal was runner-up to Roger Federer at the Australian Open
Coach Nadal said there was no rift with the former world No 1 and multiple Grand Slam champion.

"Relations with my nephew are still excellent. During all these years, we have never been through a crisis," he said.

"Until he was 17 years old, it was me who decided everything. Then Carlos Costa arrived as manager. Then his father became closer, each having his opinions.

"And the truth is that every year I had less decision-making, until the day when I will decide on nothing."

Spain's Carlos Moya joined the Nadal coaching team at the end of last year

Does this mean Nadal is going to retire next year?

That's what I inferred. Why split now and not during the end of 2015?

Trying to read between the lines, it sounds as if something may have come to a head when Moya joined the team. Toni clearly doesn't like anyone questioning his role as chief decision-maker on the team and its possible Moya may have begun to usurp that role (he and Rafa have been close friends for many years). Toni is no Marian Vajda (who abjectly surrendered his authority to Becker and just hung around until Becker finally left), he is used to being Numero Uno in the Nadal Camp and can't accept being pushed into a secondary position. It's understandable.

Wonder what Rafa's reaction will to be this and when will we hear from him about this? I hope it isn't all just a crafty ploy from Toni to bring Rafa to heel!

It was Toni who called Moya to hire him.

IT was during AO this year that in one of his interviews he said Toni will always be there ( can someone find the vid on YT?)

This is bad news for him and his fans. It means he will do even worse on tour. Toni left because his intimidation games with his player would not work anymore. They needed something more and he could not provide it. But the damage is emotional. If Nadal loses at RG it will be an slippery slope from there.

Toni took the loss of his bunny Fedr quite hard. His one job was to keep Rogi pacified. Now that the giant has woken, Toni is running for the hills to avoid being CRUSHED

Federer fans and nadal fans have been to busy whining about each player to have picked up on what federer said in post match ceremony.

It pains the fans who hate the other player that the players themselves are pretty close and confide in each other in their latter years. Courier and agassi used to and many others have spoken about this.

Federer clearly said directly to rafas team to keep him playing as tennis needs rafa. Clearly federer and nadal at his academy obvioulsy discussed their futures. Federer hinted he may not be back in australia and i took it to mean that if he has gone nadal will carry tennis but he seems to have frmed the view nadal may call it a day.

Toni focussing on the academy is a clear indication this is likely nadals last on tour. Nadal physically i dont think can handle the rigours of the tour as missing the davis cup then pulling out of rotterdam and the eay he seemed to have nothing in his legs against federer in final set seems to suggest his body cant cope. After 3 months out to be needing a rest after one grand slam is not very positive.

I suggest people enjoy nadal while they can....and federer. Ive a feeling both will be finished within next 18 months

Sure but maybe he didn't anticipate how quickly (and completely) Moya would take over his role?

I don't think this is a knee-jerk reaction. I think he's planned this for quite a while. Brought in Moya and transitioned him into the team so he can make his way out the door.

I don't think you hear from Rafa anything that corresponds to your imaginations.

Or maybe Toni is quitting because Rafa has decided to try something different and thought a change in personnel and fresh ideas are needed if he is to extend his career? Well I hope so anyway.

Much idle speculation. Why not just wait til the end of this year and see what happens? Sad to think that RN and RF will probably both be gone within 2-3 years, but their bodies are getting too old to be playing at this level.

What some people fail to realise is that the Academy belongs to Rafa so Toni will still be working with and for Rafa even if he doesn't accompany him on tour. Obviously, if Toni is in charge of the Academy he won't be able to go on tour for 9 months of the year so it makes sense.

They may work closely on a 6 year old coaching program. How is that going to help Rafa win majors ?

Rafa isn't a student of his own academy. Working at his academy (Toni & Moya) and coaching Rafa (Toni & Moya) are different jobs.
I just want to point out that Rafa & Toni & Moya will remain close to each other.
When Moya joined the Rafa team, he said that the Rafa team is like a famiy. He has alwyas felt being a member of the family, even if he has been outside of it.

A lot of people have been saying Nadal should get rid of his uncle so they should be happy. It's not as if Toni is going to stop coaching him tomorrow and he'll still be around Rafa at the academy.

Toni is not in the coaching box anymore. It does not compensate if Toni joins Rafa for dinner at the junior coaching program

I can't believe all the hate for Toni. I am no fan of Rafa, but Toni is indisputably one of the greatest coaches in tennis history. In fact, for my money, he's probably the greatest coach ever in the sport. Nobody else in the history of tennis has won 14 slams with one coach. Under his tutelage, Rafa bagged 14 majors, and please don't think, "well, he would have won MORE had Toni not messed things up."

Moya is not going to "fix" Nadal's decline when he's nearly 31. What's done is done. Moya is not fixing Nadal's serve or his slowing down from his crazy speed of the past.

VamosBrigade seems to be in shambles here.

Tio is tennis's all time greatest coach. Nadal wouldn't have come close to the success he has had without Tio.

It'd be funny if Feddy hired Toninas a consultant.

Why does it bother you? Toni's has 3 children who are growing up so he can't take them with him on tour as he used to. It makes sense that he doesn't travel with Nadal as he used to.

Toni was quoted as saying Feds level was too high in the AO final and there is nothing he can show rafa to stop him, he sounded truely humbled
Fed isn't going to be some unstoppable force now. He played go for broke tennis much like soderling did in 2009 at the french. Rafa was up a break in the 5th could have won it easily.

When you are coaching an ATG player like Rafa, bringing up children is secondary. It takes a nation to help grow and sustain a major champion.

"After 17 years where I decided everything, Carlos Costa arrived as manager, got close to his father. And the truth is, every year I was deciding less and less, ending at a point where I decided nothing. I've travelled with him for so long, I reached the point where I want to concentrate on coaching young players and our academy is the perfect place''

Seems Toni has been sidelined by Moya, he sees no point continuing know he has been frozen out. He'd rather move on and do something else. Sad one of the great duos ends in a manner like this. Respect by Toni to see out the season in spite of the issues.

Moya is a ruthless operator, we know that from how he treated Pennetta. He gets what and he wants at the expense of others. This time Toni is the victim, just like Flavia was.

Toni seems to be hurting.. Cannot believe Rafa will undermine his uncle like this after all he has done for him.

For goodness sake! Toni isn't hurting he is running Rafa's academy. They are blood family, nothing is going to pull them apart. Toni can't run the academy and go on tour at the same time.
