Nadal splits with Toni

I think Federer only meant Nadal’s future here. His statement about his own return to Australia should only illustrate that he could be injured this time next year. He also made that very clear afterwards.

But with the Nadal part you could be right that they have discussed something together at the academy and that Rafa wasn’t so sure how long his career will last.

I also think Federer is not so much interested in who will play on the tour after he retires himself, but rather he likes to have his old companions around him as long a he is active. Therefore IMO he was like "Rafa please stay, I'll be there anyway"...
No need to interpret what Federer meant. We all heard what he said and we all know he didn't qualify it to mean tennis only needs Rafa in Australia.

No sorry, not only Rafa's future in Australia, but in tennis altogether, along with Roger himself. Roger was rather talking about HIS future in Australia only. With "here" I meant in this specific speech.

The bottom line is there will be a gaping hole without Fedal on tour. I do wonder why Federer told the world that tennis needs Rafa. The establishment have been able to see his impact on the tour by comparing interest in tennis when Rafa has been sidelined with injury to when he is on tour.

The impact Rafa has made in SA after his return to the tour in 2013 is huge. TV schedules all over the world were changed to show the matches, tickets were flying and journalists wanted to go when there was a time that they used to give the tickets away and send junior reporters to the tournaments. The interest has stayed and those tours are now having packed stands.

Another excuse for the rusty injured peak golden Bull the next time, when he loses.

His parents cannot divorce twice, so maybe another divorce would do it.

I'm glad, he didnt. Moya was Rafa's mentor when Rafa started to play at a very young age on the Tour and they became good friends.
Agassi hasn't been anyone to Rafa.

I felt Agassi could have been good for Rafa the period Rafa was struggling like hell on court and choked all the time. It was painful to watch. If he could have a coach that actually has felt in his own heart and body how it is to go through what Rafa went through it would be the best support for Rafa.

This coaching "change" isn't going to have any big impact to Rafa's remaining years the same way that Edberg didn't have a huge impact on Roger. For these guys, a coach provides some impact on the fringes but it's still 95% the player himself. If it's a mental / confidence issue maybe the coach can have a bigger impact - for example I think there is consensus that Lendl had a significant impact on Murray's ability to win big matches. However, I think with Rafa it really is the physical decline that has limited him (even though he keeps talking about his "mentality"). With his style of play he just cannot do at age 30 what he used to do from age 17 to 25.

He reached three slam finals.
He was doing that before Edberg. Don't get me wrong, coaches have an impact. But in the case of Roger, having Edberg didn't mean he was suddenly going from 3R exits to finals apperances.

My point is simply that in the case of Nadal, the loss of Toni is probably not going to have a huge impact on whatever declining trajectory he was set to experience, even though he may well remain a contender for certain Slams for a while yet.

Carlos Moya is going to make Fedlovers' life harder than it has been so far. :D
That is ok, after oz open, I just want to see good matches between these two for a few more years. If we see something new from a Moyà Rafa, that is good news for tennis fans!!

"Carlos Moya never told you what happened to your uncle"

"He told me enough! He told me you killed him!"

"No, I am your uncle"
haha, this simply must get more views and likes. That last line in Vader's voice... lol!

The more I think about this, the more I get the feeling this story has been blown up out of all proportion. I'm starting to get suspicious that none of the official media outlets or the ATP have picked up on this story and there has been no statement from Rafa either! o_O

Toni Nadal: “Rafa Is In Good Hands”

After a long and successful career together, Toni Nadal will no longer coach Rafael Nadal from 2018. The Spaniard will step down knowing his nephew is in good hands and will complete the remainder of the season alongside his charge.

“When we travelled to Australia I had made the decision already”, Toni Nadal told the Spanish newspaper, El Español. “I have been thinking lately that it’s getting tougher and tougher. I told my wife the decision. Now I have the chance to be a coach in the [Rafa Nadal] Academy, something that makes me very happy. Rafael will be perfectly attended by Carlos Moyà.

“When we left Melbourne I didn’t say it to Rafael but I say goodbye to everybody because I knew it was my last time. I said goodbye to the driver, the person who always has looked after us there, the tournament director.”

Toni said the decision was primarily related to the draining life of constant travel, the desire to spend more time with his family and also the excitement of having a permanent role at the academy in Manacor, where future tennis stars would be trained.

“I have been thinking this thoroughly. It’s the right time to do it,” he said. “I know how old I am, the years and years I have been travelling around the world and the tension and stress that competition produces.

“Now I am really excited to be in the academy. I step down, but [Rafael] is in good hands. Now I am going to make the most of this 2017.

“It has been a very long journey, loads of seasons. If instead of my nephew, I had coached somebody else, I would have stepped down much earlier.”

Toni said he would always be ready to give a hand when needed, even though Carlos Moyà and Francis Roig will now take the reins.

“Let’s imagine a scenario where Moyà is not available in 2018 for a few tournaments. And my nephew asks me to help him,” Toni said. “I’ll do it for sure and I’ll enjoy it. My intention is to work at the academy and if they need me, I’ll be there.”

You are correct that the story (created by Italian publication EL Tennis Italiano) 'has been blown up out of all proportion'. Toni talked to the Spanish media on Tuesday:

Let me say how touched I am that so many Nadal detractors are losing sleep over his coaching arrangements. Rafa's fans are OK with what Toni said, knowing full well that the academy on which Toni will concentrate belongs to Rafa so there is no rift. Toni is training his sons and he has taught Rafa everything he needs to teach him. Rafa is an experienced tennis player with the best tennis strategic brain of all time and he wants his academy to benefit from the values Toni instilled in him that made him into an all time great.

I'm more concerned about his footspeed and general fire. A slow Nadal is still faster than 80 percent of the tour but a dejected Nadal is just sad to see.

Is 'concerned' the word you are looking for or are just just making an observation? Why should a Fedfan be 'concerned' about Rafa?

Everyone is milking it:
Toni says they took bits of what he said in the morning and the afternoon to make a story.

ATP article explains it all and it's no point in speculating any more.

I'm glad for this change! Hopefully will be positive for Rafa.

The Nadalistas only accept facts as true when they are stated by the Nadal camp.

Facts are not statements about the world issued by independent observers.

Facts are the world as seen only from the perspective of the Nadal camp.

Because I don't live in a world of mental fantasies with false dichotomies and can love two different players?
