Nadal taking care of his health won´t play the Davis Cup final

Doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro says Nadal needs between 3 and 6 weeks to be fully recovered from his knee injury. Nadal should be fine at the start of the 2009 season. Unfortunate to hear but at the same time it´s good to see Nadal taking decisions like these to preserve his career. Maybe he could play half-injured like he did in Madrid 2005 but he learned the lesson and he will rest this time.
Ferrer, Lopez, Verdasco and company will fight for it.

His words:
"After a very long and positive year, it is terrible to not be able to participate at two big goals of the year, Shanghai and the Davis Cup final. These are tough moments, but I have done everything possible to be fit for the final. It was something I really wanted. I am used to pain, I am used to play with pain but this one is different, new that I can't control". EFE

Yeah Argentina will be the heavy favorite for the Davis Cup. Good decision by Nadal though. There was this one thread here asking should Nadal change his style of play. I think with his knee problems, he must do it to stay in the game as long as possible.

The right but sad decision. Gutted for him, we know how much he enjoys playing for his country. It's going to be a long winter without Rafa. Get well soon:(

Good for him. I'm glad he pulled out. Should come back better in 2009. Looking forward to great things!

Pulling out of Masters and Davis Cup final??? Situation and injury must be much more serious than we thought.

Actually, it's a great decision. He can only lose 200 pts. for the two matches he won last year. No one can catch him mathematically.

He gets no points for Davis Cup. It would be better to take the full six weeks off, rest, train, and prepare for the 2009 season. This way he won't enter the year with less rest than the rest of the field.

I think he's going to come out like blockbusters for the new season, at least I hope that's the plan.

So he is "injured", and not "tired". Or is he both???

methinks drak the rafa fan should
go get a very deep tissue massage!
either that or an attitude adjustment! :D

Emilio Sanchez will announce the Spanish team tomorrow. Apparently he wants to call 5 players. Ferrer, Lopez and Verdasco will be part of the team for sure.
Robredo says he cannot play because he didn´t practice since Paris and he is not in good shape. Almagro had some injury and he hasn´t been practicing a lot lately. Ferrero is having vacation in Brazil since last Thursday. Granollers has a chance maybe not to play singles but doubles.
Spain can only hope that Ferrer comes back to his 2007 form and Lopez or the doubles team sneak a win but basically Argentina is the heavy favourite.

He will be back, but his style of play will cause career ending injuries eventually.

Well what he needs to do now is cut that schedule back hard. Screw the ATP, if they're gonna find a way to fine him then he should just take the fine. He's been #1 now, there is no point in killing himself, playing another 90 match season. He should skip whatever events he needs to in order to prepare for slams.

There's an interesting article on Tennis.com right now where Nadal says he didn't do anything extra to gain the #1 spot. He said he played the same tournaments, except I guess for the Olympics. If I have time I'll post it tomorrow. Been a little under the weather the last week or so, so I'm heading off to bed.

About 2-3 years ago, when Rafa missed
Aussie 2006 and wussed out of the 2005MC...many posters said rafa's style leads
to more injuries/fatigue..we got roasted

Nadal should have been burned out since 2-3 years and other young players like Berdych and Gasquet would have passed him in the rankings. That is what many posters said. Not only he didn´t burn out but he took the no.1 spot and is the current RG and Wimbledon champion. Now he got injured after over 1 year without injuries and playing over 90 matches. Yes, the predictions on Nadal from 2-3 years ago were spot on.

Right decision, but really sad for him and for Spain.
Hopefully he can recover soon and come back next year.

Yes I quite agree. He's given his all this year and its like a sigh of relief to know that at least will be on the road to recovery. He really needs time out

I wouldnt predict a burnout until Nadal is post 25. Until then his body is only getting stronger and recovering faster as it matures. At 25-26 is when the slow but inevitable affects of age begin to take a toll on the body(at least for tennis players).

Many of us were more conservative with our estimates. I said a while ago that Nadal would not be in the top 20 when he is 25 years old; due to injuries. We have yet to see if I was right, but admittedly it is looking less likely that my prediction was correct.

By the way so what was the "injury". I thought he had tendinitis, which is more of a overuse syndrome then a concrete injury. I don't know how you attach a time frame on recovery from tendinitis so it is my guess that the 3 to 6 weeks figure was just convenient from a PR perspective. It gets him out of playing Davis Cup but does not create the concern that the injury will carry into next year. Slick stuff from the Nadal camp.

That´s reasonable. That would make 8 years on the top which is more than most of the top players in the last years can say.

In other words, he can't finish one year of playing tennis without having to take a vacation.

Yet he is #1 in the world and better than the #2 who hasn't taken a big break yet. Shows how bad the #2 on down are. It is the less talented people who need to work longer hours. The talented ones get it done sooner and then take off for R&R.

Well, it won't be the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last.

In other words, what else is new?

Nah, you´re just a clueless fool who should have stopped posting in here years ago. Drak CAN be a troll when he´s in a p1ssed off mood which he is lately after the elections.

Hah, who cares. We're stating facts, not opinions.

What´s the fact? That he´s #1, won both Roland Garros and Wimbledon while beating Fed in both? Along with getting the Olympic Gold Medal in SINGLES? Yes well he did those things indeed. Fed should take it easy with his bad back. Or else he´ll lose to more pushers like Murray and Roddick. :-D

Nadal is done. Stick a fork in him.

Retirement must be sounding pretty good to him right now.
he is retiring, for a month and a few. That should be enough time to recover and then come back fresh, ready for another 8 month assault. :)

you know what, even if Rafa never wins a USO it's ok because bottom line is he's still achieved so much more than many other players out there have, and anti-nadal people going on about his injuries won't change that. 8)

Smart man, while everyone else is killing each other in Shanghai he's working fast. "Hey Rafa, where is that injury?" "A little higher." :)
