Nadal the only non-American named in America's 10 Most-Liked Sports Figures

Surprised to see a tennis star in there for America....good to see though. Nadal appeals more to the American style - he seems more down to earth than Federer, and his intensity and excitement out on court really brings in the fans. Nadal is good for the sport, I don't see how anyone can see this as a bad thing, other than the most intense *******s.

funny how you're the only one who's seen these 'numbers'.

I am happy that there is atleast one tennis star in america's most liked sports figures. Nadal is an amazing tennis player and deserves the recognition .However, I am bit suprised that Federer didnt make the list. According to most stats, Federer is by far the most popular tennis player in the world. I guess the U.S. is different story.

How easily people get upset around here. Not even funny.

I dont pay too much attention to the crowds, but it seems to me that US crowds (and most others) either cheer the underdog or an American. Neither Rafa not Fed are crowd favorites.

I agree with usualsuspect this probably just means nadal is more liked in the U.S. But it would be nice to see a survey like this for other parts of the world as well. Could be some surprises there too.

The commentators for the Shanghai Masters, here on UK television are constantly referring to the popularity of Nadal. They think he must be the most loved player throughout the world. During the Nadal Blake match they said that both Blake and Nadal were exciting and charismatic, whilst Federer was pretty neutral.

Nadal is exremely popular and becoming more so by the day. He is drawing a lot of new fans to our sport. I talk to people at school that have no idea how tennis is played, however they know who Nadal is.

Oh no here comes the haters again LOL

You are a clown. If you're going to state facts, you have to produce evidence to support those facts, otherwise it's just an opinion. Looking at your screen does not produce real stats.

And I agree with Mandy, I've seen many empty seats in Nadal's matches, where Roger's matches have a lot less. And giving USO 08 as an example is bad, because Roger was getting the biggest support in this tourney, some would argue even more than the americans. It was clear the tennis fans wanted him to win the last slam of the year after losing the last one in a very tight contest. Plus, if I recall correctly I think the crowd was acutally against Nadal in the semi against Murray.

Strange that you did not make the same request and comment from Mandy, especially when Mandy is the one the spoke first.

With that said, you guys are in a lame argument that neither is going to win, enjoy.

Nadal is great for the sport, but I seriously doubt he's more popular in America than Federer. But oh well...

Mandy doesn't claim any facts, and neither am I. It's impossible to do that, and that is why the whole argument is silly. Mandy's claims were based on what she saw, and as far as I remember she didn't refer to them as facts, unlike 8pNADAL, who clearly said he was stating a fact.

For the record, I think both Fed and Nadal are ultra popular, and I also think it's natural that the #1 player in the world is the most popular player.

could i see your stats?

youd have to have watched the tennis that year, i didnt take a photo of the tv

i dont need to produce stats i already saw them, plus nadal wasnt in the champions day

In the UK both Federer and Nadal draw big crowds and I'd say they are pretty even in the popularity stakes though Nadal maybe just edges it.

To most people in the UK tennis only exists for two weeks of the year, and for that reason Federer should be way more popular than Nadal, but there was a similar situation between Sampras and Agassi. Sampras was way more successful at Wimbledon than Agassi, but Agassi was more loved.

I'm sure Pete would have been willing to play the exhibition match with the roof, but they asked Agassi to (though his missus might have had something to do with it :)).

I see it at clubs, parks and in general. Nadal might be non-American, but he's being adopted pretty quickly over here.

You know how gay folks co-opt, and even 'out' certain celebrities? Well the Chicanos, Latinos and the Native Americans love Rafa over here....maybe they identify with him. I've noticed Asians and Indian kids love him too. So do middle aged white dudes who normally like Roddick types. High Q rating....ethnic crossover Benetton look with a hardworking, humble persona.

What's not to like? He's a nice kid, he's quick, strong, agile....he's pretty down to earth/almost blue collar...he'd win an All-Madden award if he were playing football.

A nice change from the skinny, lilywhite clubby tennis player stereotype of yesteryear.

Not sure about Indian kids but my Asian friends tell me Federer is way more popular than Nadal in Taiwan, South Korea and China.

Looks like Americans are just as racist as ever. Until the top 10 has the same racial distribution as the actual world population, I conclude Americans are bigots who judge people by the color of their skin. Not a shock by any means to see such a group of people picking Nadal over the infinitely better Federer.

I agree. After Wimbledon 2008, lots of people know who Nadal is. You can see a bunch of noobs on court with Nadal gear and APDC's who cant even hit a ball over the net.

Are you being sarcastic? America is a nation, not a racial group. There are several black people in the list, and Nadal is Hispanic whereas Federer is Caucasian, so if anything they show their lack of racial bias by picking Nadal.

Nadal is Spanish. He comes from Spain which is in Europe.

plus he doesn't wear fruity outfits and he keeps his girlfriends hidden, which makes the girl-fan base happy. and he's a lot better looking than fed which americans also appreciate.

i think in NY and especially at the US Open, fans were cheering for the underdog (Del Potro, Djokovic etc.) because Federer just wins over and over and he's not even American. People are bored by that. Last year's match against Murray was the most boring US Open final of all time. Nadal challenging Fed gets NY excited. Almost every newspaper article I read about Nadal in NY was positive, and Fed was neutral or like, let's have someone else finally!

NYTimes and New York Magazine absolutely adore Nadal. For some reason the press loves him.

No.It was everywhere last year that Federer was drawing the biggest crowds at the USO and was getting maximum crowd-support.

That is a statement if I ever read one LOL

The ****s are in deniel LOL and want to cover up 2008.

Then came 2009 to top it off, a lot of people were very upset with the way Roger acted at the AO and saw Nadal as a hero.

I am not talking tennis fans, just every day people.

Interesting list, Tiger Woods is the only other one i've heard of!
same here...

i'm starting to wonder if the 1100 people sampled for this 'scientifically' surveyed poll even knew all those guys !
E-Poll scientifically surveyed a representative sample of 1,100 people age 13 and over. Candidates were limited to active athletes, coaches or commentators with a minimum 10% awareness rating.

Well like I said, until there's written proof we can't really know who draws more crowd and who's more popular. I can only assume that the player who's ranked #1 is naturally the more popular, but that's hardly a fact like some claim.

Anyone who wonders about polls/stats. here's one ot beat all. In the UK they did poll where people ocult could vote for the best celebrity MOM. And guess who won?

Britney Spears!!!!

I don't know whether to cry or to laugh over that one.

Given the right questions Davydenko could be statistically skewed to be the most charismatic player on the ATP, and Safin the most boring.

One thing is beyond doubt, both the writers of that article, the ones that constructed that survey, and, most of all, the voters, have *no clue whatsoever* about tennis.

But I guess that doesn't at all matter.

Yep, Britney Spears is the best singer out there, and McDonalds the best food you can get... ;)

Britney is the best MOM out there, NOT singer. See how polls results get screwed up. That's a classic example.

:p Well I think we're hinting at the same line of thinking anyways. :)

I always have a beef with this kind of polls - and whenever it concerns a US one, the results usually make me sigh with disbelief and wondering whether they are indeed that superficial/stupid/whatsoever or that they just asked the wrong part of the crowd. I sure hope it's the latter. ;)

BTW, no insult or whatsoever meant towards US folks. After all, Eurosport has Simon Reed. :p

I think it has something to do with the way polls are taken. It seems that most polls are taken oever the phone. Most people would hang up or say no thanks when a poll taker announces his/her self , whereas those who love talking to anyone on the phone would be willing to answer anyone's questons and would respond to names they have heard of.

Hence Spears/best MOM

At thiis point I don't even know what this has to do with Nadal /Americans/polls.

And the bottom line is.....never believe anything you see or hear on the media or anywhere else.

federer after del potro beat him at the us open:

"Sure I can do that too, I'm pretty relaxed....but no i'd like to congratulate Juan Martin on a brilliant tournament....I had a great one myself but he was the best."

"And I mean of course I'd have loved to win but I've had an unbelievable run here.....I would have never have thought 5 to 6 years ago I was gonna win 40 matches in a row here so its been an amazing run for me."

federer was heavily praised for this on-court interview, it was his shining moment of sportsmanship according to all articles written about the final, its funny though how it still sounds inept and somewhat pompous that he would mention his 40 matches in a row thing :-? when you compare that to nadals style of answering questions it isnt surprising that nadal has become more respected

Many fans don't do Facebook, MySpace, tennis website online polls, because they aren't scientific, matter of fact no contest is, there's always a problem with sampling.
