Nadal: This injury is different

OddJack

G.O.A.T.
Rafael Nadal tells the Spanish TV station Laverdad that he is questionable for the U.S. Open, which begins on August 27. Nadal has not played a tournament since Wimbledon due to tendonitis in his knees. "I don't know if I’ll be ready in time for the U.S. Open," he said. "I can't say yes or no. [The injury] is not the same as other years, and I have found it a little different."

"I was going to write him and check on him because I can't believe he's been out that long," Federer said of the former No.1, who last played in a huge Wimbledon second-round loss to Czech Lukas Rosol on June 28.
"I thought the Olympics, okay, that's fine. That's a personal choice," said Federer, who won his seventh Wimbledon title last month to take back the top ranking and then finished with the Olympic silver medal at the All England Club.

"I thought for sure we would see him in Toronto, but now he missed Toronto and Cincinnati. It's very surprising, because it was nothing that we heard of prior to the injury. He played so well on clay, and then actually seemed fine at Wimbledon. He had more (recovery) time by losing earlier at Wimbledon."

Federer called it a "big surprise, these two pullouts. I'm sad for him. I hope he'll be back for the Open."

Nadal is playing everybody like a fiddle. But, hey, talentless bloggers not smart enough to even graduate with a degree in Journalism have to eat too!

Rodge didnt say it but he makes a point.

How do you win RG with no issues and right after that play W and show no signs of injury and then you get injured playing no tennis?

I know his fans can come up with numerous explanations but I just havnt seen any injury like this before.

As we know, Nadal is the king of excuses when he loses a match. He now realises that the clay season is over and he will require one blanket excuse for what will essentially be ten months of losses.

But seriously, I hope he's ok.

I read that as "I was going to write him a check". I thought, how nice of Fed to pay for Nadal's treatments! :)

They played the game for a living.

One of the few ways Federer can achieve anything more is by beating Nadal, so if he's not playing that can't happen.

Im definitely beginning to wonder what's really going on with Rafa. He did look ridiculously bad in Halle and Wimby, but still. The fact is he played. Now he hasn't for over a month and doesn't feel like he can play?

No. They play the game for a living. They are professionals. What they have earned has nothing to do with how they see their job. If anything, one could argue, that the money they have now only makes them more focused, which, in turn, magnifies anything, that can jeopardize executing their professional duties and the associated benefits.

Of course, it is a wild, wild guess from your part, that Federer sees beating Nadal as adding to his achievements. Because, if you say that, you can also say the same thing about beating Djokovic, for example. Accidentally, those are the two players, that are at the top of the game at the moment and closest to Federer in the rankings. Which was not always the case. I guess that you get my drift.

Why would people question Nadal being hurt at this point? No way he would skip all these important events (especially the Olympics) if he didnt have a serious injury.

Another alternative could be that he really is serving a silent ban.

I like me a good conspiracy theory. I theorize that RoFed signed a secret agreement with the ATP to tank for 2 consecutive years for ______ <--Fill in the blank.

It explains his inexplicable loses and overall underachievement in that period of time.

I agree totally.. reading between the lines in Roger's comment it seems there is a veiled highlighting of the hypocrisy in Nadal's injury claims.

That may not the case. Perhaps he may looked at his age and the potential he has left in his career and conclude that he cannot catch Federer in weeks at #1, nor year ending championships... but he can catch him in majors. It's the one thing which, if he concentrates solely on, would give him the best shot at being regarded as the GOAT.

Perhaps he thinks playing less is his ticket to winning the only tournaments which will be remembered in 10 or 20 years time.

It seems to have worked for the Williams sisters somewhat.

Look, no one knows what exactly happen to Nadal unless someone had access to what's being said behind close door. There could be any reason(s) why Nadal is not actively playing. However, it's been quite awhile and he missed the Olympic, 2 Master Series, now maybe even the USO. Rafa was not injured when the last time he play against Rosol. Don't act as your assumption is more closer to the truth than anyone else.

No, no. I agree. Rafa did something horrible and he signed a silent ban with the ATP! No doubt about it! :)

He doped, and then the ATP forced him to first tank against Rosol, then miss X amount of tournaments. It makes perfect sense.

It also explains what happened in RG 09. He didn't lose against Soderling, he simply was forced to tank and then miss Wimbledon 09 as punishment.

It is a possibility.

Highly unlikely one, do you realize how big of a star Nadal is?

Meanwhile Federer fanatics rejoice.

That's the way of the internets LOLville, given how much you rejoice each time Fed loses a big match or is in overall bad form you should understand it very well.

Not all is bad however, Nadal still hasn't withdrawn from USO and Fed is far too old to win it so as soon as Fed loses at USO this year you can go back to your JV handle and start making your sh1tty little threads about Fed again (and even revive some old ones, good fun!).

No it won't.

Because Nadal=tennis, right LOLville :) ?

Because perhaps the only thing that's really "hurt" is his ego?

hmmm, during the wawrinka match at cincy tonight, even one of the commentators there speculated Rafa's injury may be more mental than physical as he noted Rafa cruised thru clay season, crushing the competition, and didnt look hurt at all at Halle and Wimlbedon.
