I was taking some time out from my own pre-contest training, and chatting tennis with one of my workout friends, while having the fourth of my eight meals, and we got talking about US Open potential winners. When I asked her what she thought of Nadal's chances, she shook her head and said he has won his last slam already. I thought she was joking, but she smiled and nodded her head, saying it's true. I told her she was crazy, and that he can possibly break the slam record, he has plenty more to go. And she said to me, it is a mirror pattern, and went on to explain.

2005 - Wins FO, defeating world number one in semi final who was trying to complete the career slam
2006 - Win F0, defeating world number one in final, and preventing him from holding all four slams
2007 - wins FO, loses Wimbledon final
2008 -2009 Wins FO without losing a set, wins Wimbledon, and wins HC slam - Holds slams on all three surfaces

2009-2010 - All titles gone for reversal of the mirror to begin after first slam in Jan.

2010 - Win FO without losing a set, wins Wimbledon and wins HC slam - Holds slams on all three surfaces
2011 - Wins FO, loses Wimbledon final

Mirror or not, I think there is a chance she is right. I think it is going to be pretty tough for Nadal to win another slam. I don't see him beating Murray and Djokovic on the other surfaces and I think his run at RG could be at an end. Can he hold Djokovic off another year? Will someone else emerge? It is hard to sustain dominance for that long - what he's done is astounding, but it cannot go on forever.

This assumes Djokovic will keep his level up on clay, because after Djokovic nobody is even in the same league as Nadal on clay. If Djokovic drops his level a bit too, Nadal is in the same spot.

I also think Nadal has a good chance to win the AO as well, particularly if he can get back into the top two, which could help him avoid one of Djokovic/Murray.

Honestly though, while it is a cool "finding" I think it's a load of crap to buy into that stuff. Just one big coincidence that's all. Much like the flow of the RG13 SF and the AO12 F. Both matches are so similar in many, many ways.

And you assume that Nadal keeps his level up on clay...I'm not convinced he does. I think the odds favor Djokovic with regards to maintaining level of play/not declining.

As for the Aussie Open, I would never count Nadal out of any tournament, but to say he has a good chance in any slam outside of Roland Garros is a stretch, assuming Murray and Djokovic are there and healthy. At this point, I think he'd have a very, very tough time beating either of those two in a best-of-five on a hard court.

Some of these same people said Nadal would never win off clay.

He would be finished winning early a la Hewitt, because he was a grinder.

He wouldn't win a major for nine years straight because even Sampras and Federer hadn't done it.

The list goes on and on. The reality is that no one knows the future. Everything is speculation and speculation is not grounded in reality.

Hey, I posted it purely because it is as you just stated, a big coincidence. But one I have not come across before, so I thought I'd share. And no one needs to buy any of it, because I certainly ain't selling it...I just pointed out what was quite a unique coincidence.

Everyone here on this board invests in other's peoples achievements, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Sampras...That is what happens when you like a sport and are a fan. You invest time. When Mustard pulls out all those figures and stats, do you say "Thanks Mustard for this information", or do you say how bizzare it is for him to invest so much time in other's achievements? I am sure Mustard doesn't get paid for it either....

And as far as how she pulled that pattern out, it didn't it take her days and days, she did it in minutes...Again, don't make an assumption that despite it being an elaborate pattern and quite a strange one at that, that it took her a whole week of endlesss nights to think of something like this. Thought process and finding patterns is unique to everyone, and for some finding patterns like the one she did, is much much easier.

Of course you can express your opinion, that's why we're here. But I must say that I think it's bizarre that you skipped over so many other posters that said the exact same thing.

Mustard is obviously a numbers person. His attention to detail is what is impressive to me. I am forgetful so I can't imagine being able to do that. And the fact that he's knowledgeable is also impressive. Obviously, he's very organized. Another trait that I admire.

Yes, we all invest our time in our sport, and we all do it in different ways. Some ways may seem bizarre to others, but I think everyone has a right to say how they feel without fear of censure.

I'm completely baffled at how 2013 should have been a year for others to beat Nadal at RG, yet now that he's in form, he's weaker to win in the future!

2013 was a year for him to be most vulnerable, he had spotty clay play and was coming off a huge gap in play.

Now, that he's playing consistently, he's more likely to lose seems like odd logic to me.
