World No. 1 Rafael Nadal announced that he will miss the 2008 Davis Cup Final due to right knee tendinitis. The Spaniard, who was forced to retire from the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris two weeks ago and miss this week's Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, gave the news at a press conference in Barcelona after undergoing further tests with the Spanish Davis Cup team doctor on Monday afternoon.

"These are difficult moments, but I have done everything possible to try to make the final. I am used to playing in pain, but this is a new and different pain that I am unable to control," said Nadal.

Spain will announce its team for the final on Tuesday.

Unfortunate considering spain is toast without him but I do think Rafa made a smart a choice to get back to health. I wish him the best of luck and a good 09 season.

P.S. I really like those emoticons you put up. they are funny:lol:

Entertainment when there's no tennis on! :D

plus . . . I agree with what you wrote. Paris made it clear that rafa's efforts are not appreciated unless he's as close to 100% as possible, so I'm glad he decided to follow doctors' advice.

RAFA will live forever....If this is a Career ending injury, then its been nice seeing the best year of his career. Rafa's knee is DONE. Now it is time for andy Murray to take over the Wimbledon.

Roger throwing party now that he can finally win the French open

So this proves Nadal wasn't faking it in Paris. Yet the crowd booed a player that was really injured. Pathetic. A lot of people on the board did the same. Saying he is being a wuss. Well I guess surgery is not something so light.

So Nadal freak, when Nadal retires in December, who will you root for next year ??

Smart decision IMO,his health is most important and he already won Davis Cup with Spain and won Olympic Gold for his country this year so he's done plenty for his country.

LOL I love how you try to stir things up,no he won't retire anytime soon. This is not a career ending injury, far from it,he'll be fine for the next season.

Dude.

The real test will be to see how Nadal handles having to play a lighter schedule. His M.O. before was that his whole game was predicated on him playing alot of tennis, so if he has to ease up, will he be as dangerous?

i think youre right, unfortunately! :(

but it will be exciting if argentina can win its first DC Final.

I don't know about the Davies cup but the current tournament in China is not nearly the same without him. Imagine a year without Rafa!

please note, dear chap, that Tsonga also had surgery on his knee and he's back with a bang.

Nadal needs a break, and he'll be back stronger after his knee is healed.

However, Nadal's only opposition earlier was Roger, now he has much bigger opposition in Murray and perhaps Tsonga and Joker, so its not gonna be easy either.
But 2009 should be a great year for tennis fans if these chaps are healthy.

I have to admit I feel sad for Nadal.....he seems like one of the most honest guys on tour and I certainly don't see him as a faker (of injuries).

With that said....I think he is the kind of guy that thrives on these moments when the odds are stacked against him. When he had his foot injury that forced him to miss the 2006 Aussie Open he came back twice the player he was before then. Moments like this (if they are not too serious) can actually benefit a tennis player in the long run as it means they take some time off and actually appreciate how fortunate they are and increases their motivation/ambition/drive etc...

Also with Uncle Toni in his corner I am sure Nadal will have a shoulder to lean on that will cheer him up and keep his spirits up. For times like these, I am sure there is no better coach in the world than Toni....as he is quite philosophical about things and actually has intelligence (as well a tennis knowledge) unlike so many of the other coaches out there today.

Also - here is another scenario for you guys to consider: Imagine it had been France in the Davis Cup final and it was Richard Gasquet who had chosen to miss out due to injury.....no matter how serious the injury the French press would have 'slaughtered' him! Luckily for Nadal the Spanish press are far more supportive of their home players.

Anyway...good luck to Nadal for a speedy recovery and hope no long term damage has been done to the knee!

I don't think anyone thought Nadal was faking the injury.

Edit:

Anyway, he deserves the rest & it will serve him well for 2009.

Nadal will be back. 3-6 weeks he'll be fresh and revived for next year.

Knee Tendonitis is usually caused by damage to the meniscus, which is why they tape Nadal's knees right below the kneecap. Let's hope that it is not that, because it WILL mean the end of his career in a short time, unless he has major surgery to replace/repair the meniscus. You cannot do ANY professional level sports without a meniscus, even football. Your body does not like bone on bone contact. I had a very good friend who would have been a professional tennis player who had to retire early because of meniscus problems.

But I do agree the rest is much needed, for ALL the players.

Very good and sensitive article about Nadal and in fact all the players regarding the tour, in the Daily Telegraph: telegraph.co.uk. (sports section). It spells out just how hard it is for all the players. Quote: "Those who have actually made it to Shanghai are looking a little frayed around the edges" Well it is not surprising. This tour has been especially gruelling. I think it is questionalble whether after the Olympics this tournament should be played.

If they're going to cancel anything, it shouldn't be the MC. Cancel Madrid and Paris or a bunch of the smaller tourneys. The MC is a totally unique and awesome tournament and IMO if you're going to sacrifce an event it shouldn't be the one to go.
