Nadal to use PR for AO

socallefty

G.O.A.T.
The difference is there is a limited number of PRs one can you use, while wildcards are theoretically unlimited

Effectively this also means the organizers have an additional WC to give to a player of their choice
If he takes a spot with his PR, doesn’t it mean one less spot for a wildcard anyway as there is one more player already in the draw? I don’t understand how PRs work vs wildcards in filling out a draw for a tournament - I understand the difference for the player.

In GS tournaments, 104 players will get a direct entry into the main draw, among them players having a protected ranking (No.104 or higher).
PRs have no influence on WCs.

So, player ranked #104 (Gaston currently) is out of the draw unless they give him a wildcard?

It's just your imagination.

Rafa has a protected ranking of No.9. He won't need a WC (if he signs up for a tournament before the entry deadline) for his first 9 tournaments or for the period up to 9 months beginning with his first tournament that he competes in, whichever occurs first.
If his PR is #9, will he be seeded??

Glad to see Raonic ("RaoMUG") in the draw, as he said last summer that he'd probably retire after the US Open. Too early for that, so I'm glad to see him fight on a little longer.

Sad to see Raonic referred to by this denigrating nickname. One of the highlights of my tennis fanhood is sitting in the front row of center court at Indian Wells just behind the server and watching Raonic serve. The sight and sound of 145+ mph serves is just unbelievable and otherworldly. The stunned look on Kecmanovic’s face after some of those serves is still fresh in my mind’s eye 5 years later.

Wildcards are given entirely at the discretion of the organizers, so they can be handed to anyone regardless of their ranking

PR is a protected ranking; you would still only enter if your PR is higher than the cutoff. Like, if you weren't injured, you would be in. You can't get into the the AO main draw with a PR of #200, for example

There are 8 spots reserved for wildcards at the AO, regardless of how many players use PRs. Players using a PR aren't going to push out a WC player, but they will push out the next player who would have been in (like someone ranked #100 or so)

The difference is that he won't make his bashers angry with him for using a WC.
he still makes me angry.

I might be very ignorant here...

Why wouldn't AO give Nadal a wilcard? I mean, is a multi-slam champion and a guaranteed blockbuster given it's his first slam on his comeback. Like... any tournament would be willing to grant him wildcards right now. Happened to Andy last year. Happened to Thiem as well.

And nobody has ever been worthy of being imprisoned but GOAT of that sport who was even invited to the venue.
I hope the AO gets stripped of slam status for that, the Saudis should host the first Slam of the year instead, plus it ties in perfectly with the Abu Dhabi and Doha events.

Because they don't need to? If Rafa uses a PR entry, he needs no WC.

PR is better than a wildcard.

Oh come on guys. The reasoning isn't tough here.

Nadal's coming back. He's certain he'll gain some points at the AO, so he comes in with one of his 6(?) PR entries. He'll keep using PR until something like RG. Between clay season and the AO, he's sure to gain at least a thousand points, likely closer to 2000. 2000 points is already top 20, so he'd be seeded at Wimbledon and not need a WC. Anywhere else he'd be (if not seeded), then at least getting in on direct entry.

Lol. Would have been hilarious to see Rafa having to go through quallies. I think it’s pretty much an unwritten rule that any pro with more than 5 slams will never have to play quallies for any event they want to play. Event organizers will always just give them a WC. Look at Venus Williams.
