Nadal - Truth or excuse???

Q. Fernando was in awesome form out there. What was it like on the other side of the court? Could you do much against him?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, he's playing very good level, that's for sure. Maybe was not a good match for me. I don't know if I can say I am playing bad, but for sure I can't play at hundred percent, no?
I have problems in my leg, so I cannot run. I can't run a lot. Was difficult play one match like this, quarterfinals of one Grand Slam, with pain, without the best conditions, no?
Q. When did you hurt your leg?
RAFAEL NADAL: After the match. After the last match of Murray.
Q. Is that what the treatment was for?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah.

I don't think the issue is whether Nadal was injured or not. I kind of don't care. The issue is how yet another athlete feels compelled to excuse-monger after a loss. If you're out there and you lose, just take the loss - the other guy played better, that's it. Anything else detracts from your opponent's winning efforts.

That's one of the things that I usually like about Nadal. At a tournament last season - maybe the US Open - he was asked about an injury in a press conference after he lost, and replied that he'd only be talking about the injury if he had won. What happened to that?

after that came other 3 months of dissapointments. not that he did awful, but perfomance is always judged according to expectations.

I am not sure that he lies. But,in the Gonzo match he did run up and down,it didn't seem that he was really injured except only a little time before he called for the trainer. But by then,he was already been outplayed.
And I don't think had he been 100% healthy he would have won that match. No way.

Well, Nadal has typically suffered against players that have big, flat forehands. Recently guys like Blake, Berdych, and Youzhny (sp? sry im lazy). Nadal just hits his shots too high and short on hard courts. Players that have balls and are not afraid to win against him, coupled with a monster forehand will surely beat him most of the time.

I miss the Aussie attitudes expressed by Newk, Rosewall, Emo, et al. "If your on the court, you're fine. If you're injured, you shouldn't be playing."

Suck it up and play, man!

I´m wondering if some people here can read. Nadal never said he lost because of his injury. He said he couldn´t play at 100 %, he had some problems in one leg and couldn´t run a lot and his opponent played in a very good level. Is it an excuse? LOL. It´s just realistic.
So the same people who said Nadal is proned to injuries are now saying his injuries are fake. Does it make sense at all? Let´s say he is proned to fake injuries, at least that would make some sense.

It's not like anyone should be so shocked that Nadal lost in the quarters of a hardcourt tournament. Off the clay, he can lose to (or beat, to be fair) any of the top 10-15 men's seeds on any given day imo....

Fernando Gonzalez coach, Larry Stefanki on Nadal's weaknesses:

"He got a little nervous, a little gun-shy and started running backwards, which is the nature of claycourt players from Spain," said Stefanki, who helped Gonzalez beat Nadal in straight sets.

"I thought he was going to make the transition to play right on the baseline, take his lumps, take the ball on the rise and come to the net. Then he started playing negative. I don't know why he would do that. I know he is the best competitor out there and hustles like Hewitt in his prime, but you can't get away with that on Rebound Ace. That is what he needs to work on."

Unfortunately, the first part of that attitude is simply not true, factually.

If you are injured and hurting, then being on the court does not make you fine. An injury is an injury whether or not you play through it or not. I would much rather have athletes tell what they think is the truth rather than lie and pretend they are fine.

No opinion on the second one - we get enough complaining on this board about players retiring from matches because of injuries and complaints about players withdrawing from tournaments because of injuries.

It seems to be a double standard - if someone withdraws from a tournament with an injury then the injury is fake and they should have played, but if they play then according to that quote they "shouldn't be playing". Heck, in your very next sentence, after quoting the phrase "If you're injured, you shouldn't be playing", you tell them to suck it up and play!

Yeah, but also what J.Johansson did was wrong.I mean, he already knew he wouldn't be able to play that day-and he knew it from days before because blisters isn't something that suddenldy appears and vanishes!
But what he did?He decided to come and collect the money after just playing for what 10 mins? instead of withdrawing and give some other player a chance.

What KK,meant I think was,if you decide to play, then there is no excuse. You can't blame your injury. If you don't feel enough well to play then don't.

Suggest his attitude about describing injury afterwards became suddenly different because he got thumped. Had the match been close, I dont think he would have mentioned it.

Thank you, malakas. I didn't think it was that hard to understand ... especially since I specified I was describing an "Assie attitude" ... not an official Injury Report.

I vividly remember Newk twisting his ankle late in a match against another guy. (Can't remember if it was a Major ... but it was the Semis of a tourney.)

Newk played as tough as he could and even had Match Point on his serve. *That* moment ... was when he called his opponent up to the net and retired. In the post-match interview a Reporter noted that Newk's serve was really "on" that day ... he could have tried for an ace to win the match.

Newk's response was something like, "And where would that have left all the fans who wanted to see a competitive Final tomorrow? My ankle is sprained; I wouldn't be able to compete very well. Now the fans get to see the Final they're paying for."

He was asked how much the ankle hurt during those last few games. His answer? Newk said he must have tweaked it just that last point; that it was hardly noticeable up 'til then. (Anybody who saw that match knew that was "smoke". Newk was simply being classy -- as most Aussies we've seen in the Pros....)

Nice story, if only the Australian cricketers were like that ;)

I read that Nadal said he had a pain in his "***" but now he's saying he has a pain in his leg? Sounds dodgy to me.
