Did you see Nadal tonight? He demolished Tsonga! This is how tennis should be played! Best I have seen from Nadal in a long time! Hope he keeps it up 2 more matches!!! Tsonga played a great first set but Nadal was out of this world! Nadal owned Tsonga! There was nothing Jo could do!

hahaha I am still drooling thinking about the high level of Rafa! Yes! Take care of your body and you will be no.1 soon! where you belong! Oh yeah!
Federer can count his last weeks on the top! King Rafa is back!!!

Wow, this match went incredibly quick. When I checked the score, the match hadn't begun, but when I came back it was over! Nadal shows us how it's done again. It's taken a while, but I think he'll win RG this year, and get back to #2 with #1 in range.

This is Nadal man! He spends the same time demolishing Tsonga than Federer taking care of his hair!

Murray should learn from Rafa how to beat a firepower player on a hardcourt. Not letting him dictate play. Pushing is not the right way!

OP has an incredible short memory: What did Federer do Tsonga @ A0 10?

Now based on tonight's performance, I hope Nadal wins Miami for the first time.

Nothing surprising here. Nadal has always been much better than Tsonga on hard courts. What is the H2H now, something like 5-1?

Tsonga is an overrated player. Nadal stuck it to him and kicked his ass like he should. I laugh at people calling Tsonga a tough matchup for Nadal on hard courts just because he played one great match.

Yeah, but unfortunately that one great match was in front of a large audience in the SF of the AO. Nadal would have to repeat this result at the USO or Wimbledon to sort of make everyone erase that match from their memory.

But I agree that Tsonga is a bit overrated. He's flashy and all that, but his game is too hot and cold to ever be a consistent threat at the slams. I mean final or semifinal appearances.

True. Dont get me wrong, Tsonga is a really good player, I think will probably hang around the 8-15 range in the rankings awhile longer. I just dont get the thing about people making him out to be this nightmare for Nadal on hard courts . I understood Berdych in 05-06, Blake for awhile for sure, or even Youzhny for a bit, but not Tsonga. Like you said though it is because that match happened on the big stage and that is what people remember. I would love to see Nadal play Jo in a hard court slam soon and have his chance of revenge.

Yeah I think the Aussie Open final might well be his only slam final. He just doesnt have the awareness of playing percentage tennis or the consistency needed to win that many best of 5 set matches in a row vs the best guys. He is fun to watch in his own way, but I wouldnt equate it to Championship potential.

Do you have a link to video of the interview? I've seen a transcript but that doesn't give the full benefit of Rafa's delightful Spanglish and his adorable smiles. :)

The score is deceiving.

Jo had 8 break points, converted none. Rafa converted 3 out of 5 or something close to that.

Nadal struggled to hold serve, and got help from JO at the end.

The match was much closer than the score shows.

This Nadal you saw will not make FO final.

Bookmarked. I get first dibs on the 20 beans. :p

On clay serve won't be as much a factor as on hardcourt and Nadal fresh and in good playing form on clay is still better than anyone else on the dirt. Don't forget 2005-2008 fella.

Most of those break points Nadal hit great stuff to save them. Nadal "struggled" to hold serve against a huge hitting Tsonga yes. The flipside is that Tsonga could barely hold serve at all with Nadal tearing his service games to shreds left and right.

Maybe Nadal won't make the FO final. I could see that. But (you probably didn't even realize) you just stated that Nadal crushed a top player when he was playing poorly. So what is your prediction then if he picks it up?

This match was not close at all after the first three games.

did you WATCH the match.

it was far from demolition.

the match lasted 1hr 30 min.

tsonga failed to convert on 8 break point opportunities..not because of nadal's sepectacular play but because he missed an easy forehand or backhand.

the match is a lot closer than the scoreline shows...

lol wut?

double fault+3 unforced errors on the second shot≠tearing a service game to shreads
nadal started "tearing his service games to shreads" after he held at 4-3 in the first. the game lasted 10 minutes... and then tsonga started to just rush and not take his time like he normally does.

but on HIS OWN SERVICE GAMES nadal BARELY HELD.. thanks to some nice chokes by tsonga.

nadal didn't have to do much..tsonga pretty much self destructed on his service games.

on the bright side though..i did like how he started to attack and come to net more.

Tsonga really made quite a few magical/improbable volleys in the Australian open. Since then I have seen those exact same volleys either end up at the bottom of the net or stay up just long enough for nadal to take a cut. Nadal's gotten a bit better too since then.

nobody mentions the time issue?!?!

Tsonga was dominating Nadal at the beginning, and yes, he failed to take advantage of a lot of break points... but there can be no question that Tsonga was clearly irritated by Nadal taking more than the 25 seconds allowed between points.

some will say that Tsonga needs to man up and deal with it, but the rules are the rules. I'm not blaming Rafa, maybe he is sooo concentrated that he doesn't realise that he persistently goes over the 25 second limit, even after short points. The umpires and the ATP need to either revise the time-limit rule, scrap it altogether, or enforce the current one properly.

those extra 4-5 seconds that nadal takes between points allow him to recover just a little bit more, both mentally and physically to play a better point. He (along with a lot of other players on tour) is not playing by the rules, and it clearly played a part in last night's match.

Tsonga was exasperated with the time Nadal was taking, clearly thrown off his rythm, but he was even more upset with the umpire's unwillingness to even acknowledge that there was an issue.

No the rules are that it's up to the ref. to make the call. The ref. did not make the call and in fact told tsonga that nadal was fine overall. Tsonga needs to man up and deal with that or find another job.

Tsonga was complaining about one particular point, not Nadal's habit, in general.

And on that point the audience was yelling right before Tsonga was about to serve and Nadal raised his hand to say "wait a sec". Then Tsonga played the point, lost the point, got broken, and THEN complained about that particular point.

Some posters describe it like he's some sort of crusader berating the umpires for letting the travesty of Nadal's time wasting go unpunished. He was talking about 1 point in particular and then didn't mention it again all match. The time wasting issue didn't get Nadal 2 BPs on Tsonga's serve - Nadal did. The fact that something annoyed Tsonga on the first BP doesn't mean he wouldn't have been broken and then lost the match anyways (like some posters are implying).

the umpire is clearly an idiot. Tsonga worked his ass off to move nadal around and get him out of breath, and then nadal takes all the time he wants.
you cannot tell me that it was not an issue.

as far as tsonga needing to man up, he shouldn't have to in that respect. the rules are there for a reason, they are not guidelines and should therefore be enforced. if not, then where do you draw the line?

"oh, he just clipped the line with his toe, so it's not really a foot-fault..."

umpire's discretion is all well and good, and it makes sense to let the players take a breather after a long point, but not for one player to take over 35 seconds between the vast majority of points and let it go unpunished, or at the very least a quick word to tell him to speed up.

good point, but even before he got his serve broken, he was clearly irritated by it, and afterwards too you could see it in his face... he would get ready to return serve, get in position and then stand up staright again, waiting for nadal to finish his pre-serving routine.
yeah, it's mental weakness and he shouldn't have let it get to him, but my point is that it should not even be an issue, umpires need to clamp down on players that persistently go over the time limit, it's unfair to players that play within the time limit.

it's pretty clear that the "rule" is in fact a guideline and that the default for the tour is that it's a guideline. The ref. told tsonga that nadal was more or less fine in the match. These discussions have been had before, speed limiits in the U.S. are a good analogy imo.

Blinkism

LOL there's no "rule" Tsonga was complaining about.

Sure, if was complaining on Nadal's serve about the time-wasting, then you'd have a point.

But he was just being bitter that on his OWN serve the umpire allowed more time because the audience was being quite loud and then Nadal put his hand up to signal to the crowd to quiet down. And then Tsonga lost the point.

And then he was bitter and complained. The umpire told him "no, the audience was being loud and so it's ok that there was more time between the point" and then Tsonga dropped the issue.

Again, he's not the knight in shining armor some of you want him to be, crusading against the evil Nadal and his devious time-wasting techniques. When Nadal was going over the time on his own serve, Tsonga said nothing at all.

He was just frustrated about one point (double break point on his own serve) and then he got his head back into the game (as best he could) and didn't say anything else about it.

Nooooo, of course nobody mentions the time issue!!!

Come on, there is already a gajillion threads about the time issue (which, incidentally, I find also annoying and wish the umpires would enforce more often, Nads can get really exasperating.)

The only thing you can do to mention more the "time issue" is to superimpose a "Nadal takes more time than allowed" caption over the TW logo at the top of each page.

But sure, pollute one more thread with it.

On a side note, I find outrageous how nobody has mentioned here that Federer should be considered GOAT over Sampras.

Yeah, I love it love it, love it. When you start seeing hysteria come back about "time delaying tactics", you know that Rafa is doing well :) Finally, bashing threads instead of pity ones. Surest sign that Rafa is back on track scaring everyone
The timing of Tsonga whining was particularly suspicious, right after he got broken lol, it's obvious he needed to vent. He didn't insist on it though, I didn't think he acted obnoxious on the whole but the ump also did an excellent job of keeping Tsonga's ego in check at that moment. I love umps with authority :) Great job!
