Nadal urges Federer to resist retirement, saying: ‘He and his millions of followers deserve another meeting’

So nice !

Toni Nadal has urged Roger Federer to resist any temptation he may be feeling to retire so he and his ‘millions of fans’ get a send off they deserve.
Federer will be 40-years-old next month, and he is still reeling from a Wimbledon humbling at the hands of Hubert Hurkacz, who bageled him in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Nadal, though, wonders how much of that was down to age finally catching up with him and how much due to a lack of tennis in the last 18 months because of injury, and he hopes that Federer gets to go out on a higher note.

“I feel that he (Federer), as well as Novak and Rafael, will decide to retire the day they feel they have no chance of victory,” Toni Nadal said.
“When Roger decides that the day has come, hopefully he will do so by saying goodbye one by one, and, at least at the four Grand Slams.

“Both he and his millions of followers deserve another meeting in which they can dedicate the ovation and tribute to him for all that he has meant for our sport.”
Toni Nadal, who coaches Felix Auger-Aliassime now, spent most of his career mentoring Rafael Nadal, who was Federer’s greatest rival.

I'm with Toni on this...
100%! I think fans of all the Big 3 can agree with him here.

And also that nobody will retire until everyone is sure he won't win anything anymore. So we'll have the "correct" numbers in the end, without any ifs and buts.

But, but, but, I thought for YEARS Federer preached he wanted to avoid the Edberg style farewell tour no?

I still think playing the last two French Opens for him was downright nutty. I know for rankings, yeah, yeah whatever.

But sure, all 4 Slams and then what? IW, RM, CN, SHG? Basel is a given and so is Halle I guess. Why not Canada and Paris Masters as well?

Nah G. Nah.

He likely skips USO hard court although could play SHG-IW for 2020. Then obviously he's playing AO if healthy but then what? I think Stuttgart-Halle-Wimbledon, Cincy-USO and retire at Basel.

The whole rankings argument is moot now with the protected rankling scheme ending soon so it's not like playing lower tournaments is going to help him much. I'm sure he acknowledges the cupcake opening rounds Murray got as a WC and he'll likely get better treatment.

I think Federer may announce that next season will be his final year before retirement which will enable him to say goodbye to the fans at each tournament.

I think thar day came for Federer two years ago. He blew it at 40-15. rafa has another run left in him with those breaks he takes however. Nadal seems better with those long layoffs. rafas problem is he overplayed clay season. Should have played less

He really needs to play at least 30 more matches to see where he is at after surgery. It is impressive he went so far at Wimbledon considering how few matches he played post surgery.
He's also 25 match wins away from surpassing Connors. He won't get the titles record, but he's too close to this one to retire now.

At age 40 there is not much he can do.
How many defeats could his ego take?
The reality is that the Swiss is one championship point away from finishing his legendary tennis career.

Roger deserves the highest of ovations and farewell.

I say this as a Rafa fan. Djokovic, as much as I loath his game, also deserves such recognition for all he has achieved.

Uncle Toni is not half the journalist/commentator Ben Rothenberg is. We all know in whose corner he sits, after all.

The titles record appeared a foregone conclusion with Dubai-Halle-Basel but here we are. Unless he stoops down and he's already tried with Qatar-Geneva, that 25 marker might not be as easy as it seems. He's gone 14-5 past two seasons.

I agree that Federer deserves all the ovations and tributes. Switzerland will probably organize a special charity tennis event where they'll invite Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Wawa and many others.

True about the titles, that Dubai-Halle-Basel trio would have put him very close to the mark. Regarding the 14-5... last season doesn't really count, since he played only 1 tournament. Last full season he played, he won 50 matches. Not saying he can replicate that if he plays one year, but 25 seems very doable to me.

Has to happen really, they all deserve the proper send off when it is time. Hopefully Fed does just that and allows the people to see him one last time....imagine how much money the tournaments will make, advertising it as Federer's final appearance.

Nada ni nadie podrá ensuciar a Federer
Tío Toni says that nothing or nobody will taint Federer.

For those who know Spanish, there's an comment of him watching the match with the younglings at the RN Academy and there was a Swiss who prayed that Roger didn't get bageled, when that happened, the boy started to cry and he said he shouldn't care about it. -"An event like that, could be considered less than a footnote in the brillant career of one of the greatest sportspersons of all time"-

I'll be honest, on Wednesday, I really don't know how I could hold up my tears in my job, I was literally on the verge of crying for like 2 hours.

Haha, Rafa wants a chance to kick him to the curb, like everyone else is getting. Just let the guy go peacefully into his well earned retirement.

Nadal urges Federer to resist retirement
This title is confusing. You write "Nadal", everybody assumes "Rafa".

It's like "Djokovic stays home in July, not going to Tokyo" with explanation it's about Stefan, not Novak.

Always the 2 greatest, the tour wasn't on life support when they were on top lol. Djokovic is BEGGING to be put away and these guys hit balls out of the stadium standing at net with Djokovic practically in the umpires chair looking backwards :X3:
Aaaand, here we go... nice thread, nice conversation... Enjoying reading and then Beatles put suptile mock on Novak and you did open mock... And when Novak fans reply they will be classless and guilty for thread derailing...

An open mock? There were heaps of Ultronians saying the same thing in the match thread. There was a point close to the beginning of the 3rd set where Shapo had still won more points than Novak. Don't be too blind bestie.

Djokovic is winning, that's all that really matters. Just wish it wasn't so hard to enjoy when it's matches like today. A Baepo breakthrough with the kind of tennis he's been playing would have been amazing and finally a new final. Instead he choked all the big points and left the court getting his soul sucked out in tears. We are more than halfway to 2022, I want to see something new.

Again you turn conversation in off topic... Please Sir, don't quote me if you can't stay in the line to the conversation we do, including food pictures.

Lies. All you want to see is Nadal winning USO.

I only want Nadal to win things bc Djokovic won't stop feasting on souls  I've wanted changes for years but this undead Mummy won't let the tour move on. Look at what he's doing to poor Roger :X3: I'm going to miss Nadal playing more than even I can probably realize right now, but it's beyond time for something new and exciting in tennis.

More lies. You were salivating at the prospect of Sauron potentially bageling tired Novak in Rome F. And that was at the time vamosalaplayans were hoping for and expecting another beatdown and easy title at RG.

So don't even go there.
