Nadal: av speed 75mph Spin rate 3100 rpm

Jodar: av speed 81 MpH Spin rate 3400 rpm

I am interested to see how Fonseca compares. Alcaraz I believe last year was around 80 mph and RPM 3450.

It is odd as the eye test shows me Nadal hit with much more shape than either of the two young Spaniards and had a higher net clearance. Fonseca looks like he has more shape on his FH than the two young Spaniards.

If anyone has more data feel free to add.

It’s very interesting to know for a FACT that the new gen hit with more speed and spin than the BIG3, that’s why those ball don’t last long and go flat fast, plus the balls manufacturing has really declined a lot when they moved to countries/facilities.

Perhaps they need new balls more often. That would be a good remedy for the issue that keeps being confused as slow courts, which has been proven to not be what’s happening. Instead it’s the balls, losing pressure very quickly due to being hit harder and poorer manufacturing practices.

We need to be very careful with the eye test, because it’s not reliable. We need to depend on the science to see the actual measurements.

I think Fonseca averaged like 90mph on FH his last match. It was insane. Spin looks massive as well, I would guess over 3500.

It was the spin that was deadly on the Nadal forehand, not the speed of it. Nadal kept pounding away, usually at the opponent's backhand, until the opponent cracked.

This tells us that averages only tell part of the story. Nadal knew exactly when to unload on his forehand, and importantly, rarely missed when he did so. Nadal's magic was using a lot of variety on the forehand, dialling up different levels of spin based on the situation and sometimes flattening it out. Jodar (and other players) appear to have a more 'standard' ball that I would bet is more easily neutralised, despite being on average, faster.
