Aged like a fine milk. We didn't even have to wait a full day for Nadal challenging his opponent's serve after missing a return.
It was a cheap and sleazy move by Nadal no doubt, but that don't have anything to do with him winning the political and establishment award such is the sportsmanship Stefan Edberg award. ;)

Oh man, the salt from Djokovic fans is insane. You guys are really embarrassing yourselves after Rafa won an award that doesn't actually mean anything. It wasn't a tournament or an important record, just an award voted on by sports media, who really don't have a ton of credibility.

...But I'm not gonna pretend like I don't want to see more. Have at it ladies and gentlemen!

Why would any Novak fan be salty? Novak has 4 of these and Nadal only two. If anything the fact that Nadal fans are promoting this is good news for Novak, it increases the perceived value of the 4 awards he already has.

Because they really aren't "promoting" it. They're just happy Rafa won it. But Djokovic fans throughout the thread have said things like "Oh Nadal wasn't even the second best player" when the award really doesn't mean that much. I'm guessing a lot of them resent the fact that Nadal won, or at least that's the tone of their posts.

I can only speak for myself. I think it makes no sense that Nadal won this in a year when he wasn‘t even the best tennis player. This is no dig on Nadal, who is one of the greatest tennis players ever. it‘s a dig on the Laureus selection process.

but if we all want to raise the importance of these awards then i’m all for it

edit: also, since you talk about saltiness, read the 3rd sentence of the OP. Already there it starts to troll Novak fans. Why, if the supposed reason for this was just that Nadal fans are happy he won this award?

Didn't see the match but from what you have described, I don't see anything wrong with it if he felt the serve was out and it wasn't too late for the challenge.

Completely agree with that. The whole concept of sports "awards" or even awards for acting and stuff like that are pretty subjective. It's clear they gave the award to Nadal for getting the 20th slam, and not for his overall performance during the year, which is what the award is supposed to be about.

Peter O' Toole didn't win an Oscar for Lawrence of Arabia, which is still the single best acting performance I have ever seen, and Alfred Hitchcock never won Best Director. Award shows really don't mean much to those who actually know anything about the field.

Sports are about winning matches and tournaments, not about some silly award show.

Because other tennis players have never considered Djokovic for the award? ;)

Thiem should have won it at least once though.
You know nothing about how the vote goes. Tennis players can only vote in the final round, where they select the winner from four nominees. The nomination is compiled by a commission of tennis journalists, set up by the ATP. And it is an open secret that part of tennis journalists are negatively biased towards Nole.

I guess it's all because he's from Serbia. Or would have been the darling of the media.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nadal wins the Nobel prize for mathematics after today. If he managed to win the sportsman of the year with his 2020 credentials, why not the biggest mathematics award next year!? Today's news showed that anything is possible if you're one of the biggest establishment darlings out there! ;)
Wait, there's a Nobel prize for mathematics? Do you mean the Fields Medal?

I had never heard about this award until I saw Osaka and Nadal post about it on social media, earlier today. Is it considered a big deal?
