Wow Nadal really looks old in the second pic. Come to think of it, he'll turn 28 next June.

How time flies.

He looks fantastic in these pics. I like that he didn't slick his hair straight back like he usually does, which exacerbates his thinning hair issue greatly.

Says you?

10lidnts.

name just one cyclist who has a bigger name in the sports than the following:

1. Jordan
2. Sampras
3. borg
4. Connors
5. lendl
6. Federer
7. nadal
8. murray
9. nole
10. Ronaldo
11. messi
12. ali
13. LeBron
14. koby

*get the picture yet. I can keep going on and on with that list for a year.

even some of the players in cricket are making in the $30 million range.

cycling is my second love after tennis but it is what it is. track stars and cyclists don't have much of a status. it is supply and demand among other things.

I mean, you could make a case for Armstrong... before the scandal.

Yeah. Few more wrinkles and ************* will lose interest and focus on someone less than 1/3 their age instead of almost 1/2.

Indurain was one of the best cyclists ever. He was naturally gifted (very tall, long limbs, and incredible lung capacity). He was sort of a gentle giant, always subdued and humble.

The best time trialist with no question about it, he also developed into a ver strong mountain stage rider, famous for his lighting fast and fearless descents as well.

Here is a video of a time trial where he overtakes a (possibly pre doping) Lance Armstrong, who left 2 minutes before him, and who is helpless to follow him:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGPGm38wt5g

Here is the short version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmR9k8UAohs

Notice that when this happened Armstrong was the reigning Cycling World Champion.

Indurain retired tied with Merckx, Anquetil, and Hinault for most TDF wins (5), but many felt he could have achieved a few more, as he retired prematurely to be with his family.

too good mate. you know your cycling. I could use your help at Camelot. we need a cool cycling board there.

looks like you know your tennis pretty damn well too.

you have single handedly shut down all the federereeesian missionary "Bark Shops" with your ruthless and efficient lectures.

there is a silver lining for them in all this: now they have more time to hang on to nole's nuts.

Thank you, Death Master. Yes, I think cycling is not as appreciated globally as tennis is, and has suffered a bad rap recently because of the public doping scandals at the highest levels. But there are a lot of legendary cyclists who wrote history in the slopes of Alpe d'Huez and Luz Ardiden (apologies for my poor French spelling).

And anybody who has ridden a cycle seriously knows that it's probably the most physically demanding sport there is.

Must be a great feat.
I know Spain won soccer world cup recently. Might have some big names there. Then there is Sebastian Vettel of F1 currently chasing all time great records...

I thought Nadal is usually underrated. Looks like atleast not in his country.

Yeah, chosen by his own hometown, big deal.

Only place he can be chosen best for anything.

Heh, thanks for the laugh.

Nice, congrats Rafa! Definitely well deserved.

On a side note all this cycling talk makes me want to go for a bike ride.

Federer has won Swiss Sportsman of the Year multiple times, but you don't see his fan create any thread about him.

Iker Casillas
Xavi
David Villa

you'd think one of La Furia Roja would be chosen as the GOAT Spaniard...then again Marca is a Real Madrid newspaper (though no love for Casillas?)

You didn't need to. You uttered an illogical remark about Nadal's award being worthless and you are a Fed fanatic. No need for you to mention Fed. I can put 2 and 2 together, no? :)

It wasn't an illogical remark. It was an opinion. I can counter by saying you are blowing up something that is meaningless because your head is stuck so far up Nadal's arse.

Bolded: As the Nadal fangirl you are? A resounding NO!

Raul is better than Villa by a long shot.

Villa is unquestionably the greatest Spanish striker of all time, whether it's by goal scoring or by contribution. Highest goalscorer for Spain (and in way less appearances, he wasn't always given the chances like golden boy Fernando Torres). The primary offensive force for the La Furia Roja that became the most dominant force in world football since 2008. Raul took forever to get the goal records (hell Cristiano is going to break his Real Madrid by 2 years time)
