why'd nadal play hamburg, anyway? i hope we're not gonna start hearing the 'nadal is worn out from winning everything on clay' excuses.
um . . . i'm quoting myself from page three of this thread, yesterday.

nadal (and nadalfans) can't have it both ways. you can't want to win EVERY clay court event, monte carlo, rome, and hamburg in the same year (which NO ONE has ever done), rack up the wins and extend the streak, get all the praise and glory for being the "king of clay" . . . and then b*tch when you finally lose from exhaustion! it was silly to even PLAY hamburg when roland garros (the REAL prize) is right around the corner. as if nadal needs extra practice on clay. what is was was greedy. and davy and hewitt made it even worse for him.

and now, fed gets the benefit of nadal's decision to play in germany, plus the tough matches nadal has had . . . and it's all used to diminish fed's win. hmm . . . interesting.

Why is Federer speaking in German while Nadal spoke in English? Nadal doesn't understand German and so does the rest of the World which makes it look a bit racist by the Germans especially when Federer was speaking to Nadal in his speech.
He's speaking to the crowd !!!!
Monaco spoke in spanish when he won Buenos Aires. Same with Chela in Acapulco. Same with Nadal in Madrid in 2005.

To everyone who has suggested that Fed won just because Nadal was tired and was playing poorly, let me suggest that it takes more than that to beat him on clay. Especially 6-0 in the last set.
Fed was playing well, and I think he figured something out. He kept shooting flat laser forehands to Nadal's forehand and he did not like it at all. Even if he did not hit a winner or force an error, Nadal kept coughing up short balls from his forehand side of the court. Combine that with few mistakes from Fed's backhand, coming to net often, and going after Nadal's serve, and that you get a game plan for Fed that will always give Nadal trouble, even when he is playing well. I think Fed/Nadal matches will be very different from now on.

I can see a BIG confidence boost for Fed heading to French Open, but I don't see a confidence lose for Nadal.

I think it could be even better for him to lose now, specially because he doesn't have the same pressure, once his streak is over. He takes a big weight off his back, somehow.

It's going to be a VERY interesting French Open. But I still have Nadal as the heavy favourite. I think he DOES have hunger of revenge :)

You could be right. No one will mention the streak, he got that loss out of the way before the French Open and he will be rested now. Time to refresh, recharge and think revenge. He almost pulled off the impossible, winning all 3 clay Masters. If had to lose a match on clay it was better off being in Hamburg. The really important one is coming up and Nadal should still have confidence, but unfortunately he gave Fed some too. But we all know how good Nadal is getting revenge on clay. So I break a tiny smile today. It´s gonna be rough today. I might wanna stay clear of the threads. I don´t wanna get into arguments.

You know Nadal and Federer obviously have a ton of respect for each other. It would be nice if their fans could do the same. I think we have a REAL rivalry here now.

And to all the people who are watching on TV and also not everyone in the crowd understands German.
They're not thinking about the people on TV. You're there, and you speak to the people you're looking at, to the people who watched you play.

Racist? That's ridiculous.

Oh I forgot to mention, H2H is now 4-7. Also for all those claiming this win means nothing for the French Open, Federer figured out his form. He figured out what he has to do to win points against Nadal's serve. He figured out that high 1st serve % does wonders. All that will translate well.

Lets all hope for a Fed vs Nadal RG final.Thats the best matchup on clay that i see now.We need more Fed vs Nadal matches.I know Nadal will be in the final, its up Roger to get there.

I know where Hamburg is but it's a bit unfair for those who don't speak the language.
No, it's not unfair.
And why not? Probably lots of people in the crowd doesn't speak English anyway, so they must think Nadal was a bit racist!

I think Fed did just fine, talking in german and not english. I think it would have been MORE disrespectful if you're in Germany, you KNOW how to speak german, and STILL, speak spanish.

If Haas would've won the tourney, would you expect him to speak to the crowd in english!!??

One of the huge keys for Federer was his consistent low backhand returns of Nadal's serve, effectily setting up even rallies. Once he did that, and the shanks stopped happening, it was all over.

You're kidding right? Nadal served and played the worst I have ever seen him. He was tired, and if you disagree it's nothing but denial. I agree Roger might have some more confidence but how often have you seen Nadal just stand there and watch balls five feet away go by? It was like watching Sampras in his later years. :p

streak? I don't think Nadal cares anything about the streak when he is playing. Even if he won, he still would be himself at RG. so I doubt the streak is any kind of pressure to him.

Fed played good+ nafdal didnt, rafa is burned out.But he will be ready for the fo, i dont think fed will even get to the finals. He looked good today against a tired nadal, but he did not look good in this tourny. One of the many clay court players will take him out in the french.

Okay I understand the logic now, no need to rant.
I don't think that it's very hard to realize why someone who is interested in listening to the speech Federer is giving is a bit disappointed because he can't really understand what he's saying.

Ohh, disappointed! That's totally fine!
I'm disappointed too, my german is CRAP! But that doesn't make it racist, or unfair to the REST of the world.

Luckily, the broadcasters know a bit of german, and somehow translated part of the speech. And probably, it's going to be on the Net translated in a matter of hours.

Being disappointed and calling Federer a racist for speaking German in Germany to a German crowd are two different things. You could've just said you were disappointed in the first place. I'm sure if Nadal could speak German he would've done so in his time to speak to the audience.

Hey tlm, plz.Roger will have some concerns, no doubt but Rafa could have concerns as well,What about his legs giving out.He has played 3 clay tournaments.Yes there is a week but still.

True.

From what I remember he doesn't speak English.

It's amusing to see how much the "Federer in 3" choice is gaining more and more votes (12 more) after the match is done

Okay it's not racist of course since he is in Germany speaking to a German crowd. End of story. Take a deep breath and relax.

Okay now you can collect stones and start throwing at me but one at a time. And not too large as this has to be a slow steady process

Racist was too extreme for this situation. Wrong word, a mistake and I have the balls to acknowledge it.

This is what happens when you play 4 tournaments with only one week rest in between. Not to mention he played doubles too except Hamburg. Next year, skip Hamburg unless he loses early in Rome.

Yes, I totally agree with you.

I said it as it is in my earlier post about the reality check. Nadal totally gave this match away, gifted it to Federer.

No worries, it happens and I've got no stones ;) Would've liked to have been able to understand what he was saying, myself!

The only dissapointing thing in this match for me is Roger's serve. What the heck happened to it?He cant get a first serve in to save his life!

Should Nadal switch to a larger frame???

SHANKS
Fed: 1 FH, 2BH= 3 total
Nadal: 4 FH, 1 BH = 5 total

WINNERS
Fed: 15 FH, 2 BH= 17 total
Nadal: 5 FH, 5BH= 10 total

BAGELS
Fed= zero
Nadal= one

I think Morissey is tired of this game

You read my mind. I have another troll to add on my ignore list. Who knows? federerfanatic seems quiet of late, maybe he´s also Fed Fan 2007. He needs another name to really let loose the troll posts. He realized that we knew he was navratilovafan so he needed to come up with a better name.

Nadal might have been tired today but I believe that what gave Federer the win was his new mental approach against Nadal. He was mean, aggressive and showed signs of psychological uprising at times, while also shouting "come on" on important point won. His backhand was solid and he served well in important games in the 2nd set which turned the match around. Also he didn't force himself to the net when it wasn't needed and played the way he felt would be better.

With this kind of performance and sportsmanship he has a very good chance of winning the French Open this year.

The list is growing

This match will have massive mental implications for Federer in the short-term, no doubt at all. Whether it has lasting implications, well we'll have to wait a few weeks, hopefully for another final between the two.

As for Nadal, well only he knows how truly tired he was, and therefore only he can know if this 'blip' will have any lasting impact, though in reality I suspect it will be similar to the above - it'll depend entirely on what happens in a few week's time.

Here's hoping for a Federer-Nadal final in Paris....
