"The truth is I had a chance at the 2-1 in the second set, but he played very well. Maybe I was not the same as always mentally. I feel a little bit tired, true. Physically it was perfect. It was a lot of matches in a row... I congratulate Roger. He was playing very good tennis. Well, I lost against the number one and one of the best in history."
"I think I made more mistakes than usual. I played very short and he has a very good feeling for the ball. He played better than me and he beat me.
Quote from nadal after the match. Let's just face it the loser will always have bad day, and or have a longer match the day before, etc (according to the person's fans). The winner always somehow manage to be more fit and playing a much better tennis that day. So for nadal's fan just for once accept the fact that your boy is no longer perfect on his favorite court. The funny part is nadal himself acknowledge that he played against the best in history of tennis, and he seems to have more respect toward fed than all his fans. The same way around that fed has so much more respect for nadal on clay or even anywhere else, than his fans. Just understand this tennis has changed so much that it has become a sports that requires high level of fitness, so they will blame themselves if they feel tired during the match especially in a 3 sets match. I am pretty sure Nadal would like to havehis streak going to, but fed just have a better day today. This is actually really good for tennis and I am looking forward for the next 2 months with rG and Wimbledon coming.

If Nadal was tired from one week of best of 3 set tennis, he has no chance at the French.

I'm pretty sure the argument is that he was tired from playing his grinding style on clay for consecutive tournaments, getting to the final of each: Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, and Hamburg. I don't think anyone's saying he's tired just from playing at Hamburg. Federer didn't play in between Monte Carlo and Rome, didn't get very far in Rome, and in fact got much less far than Nadal in the last two hard court tournaments that they played. Watching the match, it seemed very obvious that fatigue set in for Nadal, just like it did for Djokovic against Moya.

That being said, a loss is a loss. Players have won while facing great fatigue in the past (Sampras-Corretja quarterfinal?) Credit goes to Fed for fighting back and taking advantage of the situation. But to say that Nadal's fatigue didn't have anything to do with it would be having your cake and eating it too. ;)

Yeah, I was tired too.>>>>> In fact I was absolutely exhausted from rewinding and forwarding all those "shanked" forehand winners Fed was hitting. I think I'm going to have to switch to a lighter, less demanding remote control with larger buttons.

If Nadal was tired from one week of best of 3 set tennis, he has no chance at the French.

Nadal played 10 matches with a total of 23 sets over a span of only two weeks. In last years French Open Nadal played 7 matches with a total of 24 sets but he had a day's rest between each match unlike the last two weeks. Nadal was clearly exhausted. By the way you are spending too much time on this website. Get a life you Fed fan troll.

After all the threads started by Nadal fans about how Fed is in a slump, should retire, shanks too many balls, should switch to a larger frame >>> I'll take it.

Nadal is the one who sets a dumb schedule for himself, which leads to his injuries or getting tired at certain points of the year. He deserves no consideration for that, it is his own choice and own problem he brings on himself.

hey......do you like bagels?

I hear having them on grass is nice, but they taste extra special on clay.

I know! You can ask Rafa! I'm sure he knows the answer!

Ah, but drakulie - to justify your argument thusly is to stoop to a lower level, is it not? I only responded to this thread because I was a bit surprised to see you in it with federerfanatic and that sort. Today you shouldn't feel the need to prove them wrong, because the ultimate argument is already self-evident: Scoreboard. :)

I've been gloating more about the racquet and total numbers (shanks, winners, etc on both sides), than the victory over Nadal. :)

It takes a lot of courage to suggest the ultimate grinder lost because he was tired, but even more to actually use the word "thusly." ;)

I can't tell if I'm being insulted or complimented...well done. ;)

I'm not really trying to defend Nadal, per se; I like to try to keep a consistent perspective on these sorts of things. I've always liked the games of both Federer and Nadal, but I do get tired of a player winning everything all year. Nadal has really been the only one to challenge Fed's dominance consistently, and only for one portion of the season. I believe that there are a lot of fans who, like me, are fairly neutral when it comes to a preference between Nadal and Federer, but feel compelled to stray to the Nadal side during the clay season, if only because it's the last bastion of resistance to the ATP becoming a total one-man show. People like me tend to not want to see the record book utterly shattered because having one guy who's clearly "the best ever" takes some of the fun out of it. I like things to be debatable rather than cut-and-dry. There are, obviously, many others who enjoy pulling for the top dog to win every single time (though I'll probably never truly understand why).

I was just playing with you. I agree--rivalries are good for the sport.

I'm also not saying Nadal lost because he was tired, but rather that fatigue was an important factor in the loss.

The same is true for Federer's win over Nadal in the 5-set Miami final a few years back.

And Federer's loss to Nalbandian in the Master's Cup in 2005.

I WOULD LIKE TO INTROCUCE TO YOU TENNIIS WAREHOUSE'S NEWEST MEMBER:

" MR. I LOVE NADAL!!!!!!!"
:) :) :)

you are going to pick Fed in straight sets?????

How much do you want to bet? I tell you whaT:

if Fed wins in straight sets I will change my name to "I love Federer" and retire my current tag.

If on the other hand Federer wins in three or even better loses the match then you must forever be known as "I love Nadal".

do you accept my challenge?

.

Tennis Bum, I accept

I'm very surprised by you just trolling it up. You like to make outlandish statements but never rubbing dirt in people's faces. Kicking the horse while it's down. All the cliches you want. Don't rub it in too much or it may backfire in about 2-3 weeks.

Morissey, fact of the matter is there have been many threads started by Nadal fans (which you have participated in), that are absolutely ridiculous.

I am hardly a troll. I may not like Nadals game, but have always respected what the guys has done, and is currently doing. Additionally, was one of the few guys on this baord (who is not a Nadal fan), who gave Nadal a chance at making it to the Wimbldeon final last year. So get your fact straight.

I have to say, Morrissey, you are really one to talk. Drakulie is far from a troll, although I can't really say the same for you and most of the Nadal fan club AKA the Troll Alliance. Look at all the threads from last week about how much Fed should retire. Guess who was at the heart of those threads? You guessed it, the Troll Alliance. I rest my case......

ROTFLMAO! This is one of the funniest posts I have ever read. Way to go, Drak.

I am very fair with Federer's chances but i just cannot see him beating Nadal at the french open. Fed has shown me nothing to prove that he has improved his clay tennis. He is still having much trouble with rafa's forehand to his backhand. today he got away with it cause he was able to get real aggresive with his forehand. and you may ask why ?? cause rafa's forehand and backhand just did not have the sting and spin it usually has, it was just sitting up short and asking fed to spank it. Usually, it is jumping very high with heavy spin and weight. and rafa was half step slow today, so he was not able to get in position to get a good weight transition into the shots, another reason rafa's shots turned into nerf balls. to rafa, half step seem to make a tramendous difference on his shot, it is so noticeble, seems to be more than other pros. i don't know what the reasons are.

from what I have seen, drak is hardly a troll. He is just giving a certain group of people a taste of their own medicine ;)

Yeah I feel the same way. The excuse making is ridiculous. I know that Nadal was tired, but he has persevered through tough matches before, and he was fresh enough to beat Fed down in the first set. I am a fan of Federer, but I am no troll. I like Nadal, I respect what he has done at such a young age. There are terrible trolls on both ends, but to say Fed fans are so bad is crazy. Nadal fans have had a helluva lot more to cheer about over the last three months than we have. Drak isn't trolling, he's making fun of the borderline insane posts about gear switches and retirement. If you guys can't take a joke, get off the internet. Humor is everywhere, deal with it.

Fed has won 3 of 4, and has notched a win on all surfaces in that process. A come from behind win on clay a week before the French is the best possible thing that could have happened to Fed. If he makes the final, it will be one helluva match.

If Final is on Hot dry day, i say fed can push nadal to 4 or 5 sets but if it is a wet Slow clay day, forget it, it will be Nadal in straight sets.:D

Fedace said he was certain Nadal would win the Australian Open, and that he was certain Roddick would take out Federer in the Australian Open semis. We both saw how those two predictions turned out.

it's good for Nadal to lose this tournament, i think. Like it was good for Federer to lose in those prior tournaments. Losing helps motivating one to perform better in the next tournament. Had Nadal won Hamburg, I think he would probably lose at Roland Garros. Just my opinion.

don't worry, I'm sure he'll lose anyway ;)
haha. You know, I have a vhs tape to record all the 2007 men's grand slam final matches. I hope Federer will win the grand slam this year but if he does not then there's always next year :)

Thank you for the support! You are a gentleman and a scholar!

Glad you got a chuckle>> I did when I posted it.

This is true. Thanks for taking note of that.

Once again, showing your scholarly ways, and ability to see a joke! Good post.

i agree with this. winning so many matches in a row can make you overconfident and cocky like feeling invincible. That is when you let your guard down and lose. Now with this loss, nadal will be stronger mentally now than ever.

you know what? you're absolutely right!

I would like send Rafa something to commemorate his astounding run!

Does anyone know what his favorite food snack is? Could it be like a donut, or some donut-like baked item that he would enjoy? Something circular though, because it will remind him of his winning streak, even if it ended so violently....maybe like a.....oh wait, he has one of those already. Nevermind.

Nadal might not have been at his sharpest form in the last two sets (thus the beating) but regardless of his condition if Federer plays aggressive with his forehand and serves well, Roger has good chances against Nadal on clay.

Maybe Nadal was tired, but let's not forget that he was playing #1, not some amateur. I give credit to both of them in the FO final. They are both great players and it's a pleasure to watch them play.
They are very different personalities and play style. I, personally love Federer's style (I always admired one hand backhand players, but that's just me).

If any of you read the Sunday Times sports section- (enormous two page spread) on Nadal the reporter said that the exhaustion was showing earlier in the week when he had also to attend numerous promotional stuff. It wasn't just the constant playing but all the raz matazz that goes with being famous that contributed to his state of play against Federer

Wow, and the excuse list gets larger and dumber.

I'm still pulling for Nadal but it is obvious he has nothing today. He looks exhausted. I called this yesterday, but it's disappointing to see after the first set.

All Nadal is doing his hitting right back to Federer over and over with short and slow balls. How can he win? Whenever he goes for an angle he misses. Federer is up 3-0 now. It's over IMO. He has no energy whatsoever.

Now this is a new one. Sour grapes in advance of a loss. Some of you Nadal fanboys are real losers and you are one of the worst TennisandRetard.

*******s at their worst right now. They are just relentless. Once Nadal wins than Nadal fans say how it was a great match. If Fed wins than all hell breaks lose.

Federer fans have to realize Nadal is playing like crap and is obviously exhausted. How can this victory REALLY make them think the outcome would not be different if Nadal were at full speed? He's moving poorly and hitting worse. It has nothing to do with Federer, Federer is just capitalizing.

What a pathetic sore assed loser you are. :p

Well Fed has won 3 out of the last 4 matches they've played. Maybe he's figuring Rafa out.

Lets not forget 2 things:

1- it was only the best of three. The French is the best of five. Mcenroe came out and won the first two sets and was leading in the third set against lendl. Bottom line: Mcenroe lost in five.

2. Sampras won Rome but he never could win the French. Nuff said.

There is nothing to figure out, Federer just gets outplayed by nadal and his speed. Fed still cannot handle nadal's forehand into his backhand. all fed can do is just get it back into the middle of the court and eventually it falls short and nadal eats it up. and fed was able to attack the net on tired slower nadal all day in hamburg, once again not going to happen at french.
