Nadal vs. Federer Rivalry

over the years we have seen many great rivalries between many different players

but is the Nadal vs. Federer rivalry the greatest of all time

they have played against each other 20 times in all

if you dont think its the greatest rivalry tell me which one you think was, do you think it could become the greatest.

I don't think it is yet. I still think Sampras-Agassi is the greatest one for now. Its one of those things, where you mention one of their names and both pop into your head. The atmosphere in their matches was filled with so much more excitement, I know that Wimbledon was one, but Sampras and Agassi had it consistently. Not to mention I thin they both had more encounters in Grand Slams. That's what I think though, I'm open to other people's options.

Easily the greatest....Never before has a rivalry existed on every single surface. For example:

Borg vs Mcenroe: only lasted two years and on grass and hardcourts only (neither even bothered with the AO at the time)

Agassi vs. Sampras: hardcourts only.

Laver and everyone else: grass and clay only.

No I don't think Fed vs. Nadal is the best rivalry. I still have to say Samprass vs. Agassi even though I was never a Samprass fan. Nadal owns fed too much also for it to be a real rivalry.

The 6-2 h2h at grand slams in Nadal's favour is a little too lopsided to make this the greatest rivalry of all-time in my opinion, with both of Federer's 2 victories coming at Wimbledon. As far as I'm concerned he needs another victory over Nadal at a grand slam, preferably at a different slam to Wimbledon, to make this more of a rivalry and less of an ownership.

has there ever even been any other rivalry on clay at all????? nadal / federer is the clsoest to a clay court rivalry in the history of tennis.

nice comments

personally i think it was the greatest of all time because i never really saw very many other rivalries

Laver only played on grass and clay,...there were no hardcourts at the time.

There are these things - you may have heard of them - called libraries. Most cities have them. They have inside of them these things called books. Inside the books are words written on pages. These words tell us things - sometimes really useful information, like whether Rod Laver played on hardcourts.

I humbly suggest you take a trip to a library and read a book about tennis history. You might be surprised.

Already the best of all time, and still getting better. Consider:

* They have been #1 and #2 since July 2005. Think about how ridiculous this is - no other player has been able to crack the top two for almost 4 years!

* They have met in 7 GS finals, more than any other 2 players I think (have not researched though). Although Rafa is up 5-2 and 18-12 in sets won, most have been very competitive (with the 2008 FO as the notable exception).

* They have contested GS finals on every surface (I don't think there are any other 2 players that have met up in GS finals on every surface, but I could be wrong).

* They have produced 2 of the arguably best matches of all time, both in GS finals (2008 Wimby and 2009 AO).

* And all this is even before we start with all the masters finals that they have contested, Fed breaking Rafa's streak on clay, Rafa breaking Fed's streak on grass, etc etc...

Nadal-Federer on clay is certainly not a rivalry when Nadal has won 9 matches out of 11, and both of Federer's wins have come against a jaded Nadal in the final warm-up event before RG.

Now Lendl-Wilander was a proper clay court rivalry, between probably the 2 greatest players on clay during the open era after Borg and Nadal.
Lendl edged their h2h 6-4 on the surface. They played each other 4 times at RG, with both players winning 2 matches apiece.
