Nadal vs Hewitt...who returns better?

As I was watching Rafa vs Ivo yesterday, I came to a conclusion that Rafa actually handles Ivo's serve better than Hewitt.

Some would say that Sampras had a better serve than Ivo, but how come Hewitt returned Sampras' serve quite effectively but not the rapper's?

Nadal clearly has a better return. And besides, Sampras' serve is not close to the level of Ivo's. There's no competition! :)

Nadal had moments of absolute wizardry against Karlovic.

That being said, he is not one of the top 3 returners in the game today

You're incorrect. Check the stats prior to making such a claim.

This is for 2010... in 2009 his return stats were virtually identical to these.

He's currently #1 for both
% POINTS WON RETURNING 1ST SERVE and
% TOTAL RETURN GAMES WON

Hewitt just has problems with fed and karlovic, he handles everyone else. Nadal hasnt really played a great serve and volleyier on fast courts like hewitt has. So gotta go with hewitt for being proven.

Nadals shots at the yec were also sitting up and it looked pretty quick there.

Those stats don't reflect the difference between return of serve and the return game. It would be like looking at hold percentages to determine the quality of a player's serve. In addition, it would have been better if you provided the 2009 stats since we have a limited sample size for this year.

Heiwitt loves pace, and on fast surfaces he is the better returner when it was 2001 or 2002. Right now I think It is nadal who returns the ball real well with spin for depth...

Nadal has a better return, it's not only harder but more consistent. Hewitt is only 150lbs, he's too skinny to be powerful at anything. Now I know your going to mention Davydenko but the thing is Davydenko is more muscular then Hewitt.

Depends what you're looking for in a return i guess.

Both are pretty consistent returners - of course Hewitt's getting a little older so he's definitely not as fast on his feet as he used to be.

Nadal puts a lot more work on the ball, his returns are heavy topspin loopers that can be blatant winners or force an error. Hewitt puts less work on the ball, his returns are flat sinkers that are a little lower and can be difficult to handle.

The reason for that is his tenacity, speed and defence. But his actual return of the 1st ball isnt as good as a Murray or a Nalby.
Sorry but Nadal is superior at returning serve.

QFT!!! I saw some of that match this morning (even though I despise both of their playing styles) and Nadal was watching aces whiz past him all night long. Not to mention the un-returnables.
