Rafael Nadal warns that he will get better in second half of the season

Tope Adefala

Former world number one Rafael Nadal has insisted that he is still motivated despite a difficult season so far.

The Spaniard failed to retain his French Open title for only the second time in 10 years, while he has dropped to number 10 in the world, which is his lowest ranking since 2004.

However, he said a press conference: “My goal is to qualify for the World Tour Finals at the end of the season. My main goal is finish the season healthy. I am going to have a much better second-half of the season than I did in the first six months.

“I have the motivation to do it and I feel my mentality and my body are ready for it. And then if I’m able to play the full season, I hope to finish in good ranking position and then have the chance to start 2016 stronger.

“That’s my main goal. Winning Grand Slams or not – I won enough in my career, 14 is enough.”

Nadal will play Alexandr Dolgopolov in the first round at Queens Club today.

It's the biggest hole in his resume. All the great one(except Wilander) have won the prestigious WTF and Nadal don't want to be left out. Winning this event will elevate his legacy and where he stands in all time great. Nole's main goal this year was to win the FO but he failed. Let see if Nadal can fulfill his dream this year.

maybe he will bully the whole ATP into making WTF a clay event (because it is good for the knees no? ) and then maybe he will win it...

as long as it is indoor.. he will get bullied there by the big hitters and better players..

The difference is that the FO is a slam, thus much more important to one's legacy.

His silly request for changes is highly unlikely be granted . But since he managed to remove Carlos Bernardes from officiating his match, who knows.

If the WTF becomes a clay event, Nole will demand the French Open to be play on plexicushion.

Depends on who you referring to. If a player hasn't won anything, we all can agree that he/she would take the FO over the WTF, no question. However, Nadal's case is difference. He said that he's already won 14 slams and that is enough.

At this point Rafa does not have to prove anyone that he can win majors.

Winning the WTF will be as impressive as winning a 15th major for a resume like Rafa.

It's not about proving he can win a slam, it's that any and all slams are the ultimate achievement. If he can not get that this season then the WTF is the next best thing.

So now because fed is not winning anymore it is now surface specific? No more generalized terms such as "hard courts" anymore. Is this to degrade accomplishments of other players outside of your tennis god? I notice what you all are doing. The AO is hard court no matter what the frodos want to call it.

The more I hear this crud the more the sport needs Fedal retired and gone forever.

Slams are the bigger achievement , but Rafa has already 14 of them. He does not need anything more unless he has sights of 18.

Whereas getting a WTF may just fill the so called void in his resume.

Similarly, I would say a Olympic medal , given all the recent media hype, may be better for Fed , when we look back at their resume 20 years down the line.

I don't know what you are talking about. Every player has his best and worst surface. Nadal's best is clay and Nole's best is plexicushion.

Ok Ill give you that however the gangsters on here have been degrading Djokovic's 5 AO titles ever since he won his 2nd title there. Are all his other hard court titles on plexicushion?

Whoever degrading his 5 AO titles that's their problem.

To answer your question, obvious no. Why are you asking ?

Winning 15 or 16 would be superior, tennis history does not stop after the Fedal era. The WTF would be big though.

So Nadal finally proves beyond any doubt that WTF is really important to him and all other ATP players and that Nadal's lack of any WFT titles is a major GOAThood disqualifying hole in his resume. Thanks Nadal. Vamos!

This is why guys like Federer and Murray and Djokovic are all in deep trouble at this Wimbledon and US Open.
They are all under immense pressure to win the slams.
Whereas Nadal doesn't care, he just wants to try his best and improve.
This is partially how Nadal has 14 slams, this attitude.

He admits slams take a backseat to WTF, at least for now. His fans are of course in denial for having been proven fools.

It's not a "so called void"…it's a massive grand canyon sized hole in his resume. He's inept on indoor courts and there's no hiding it.

He didn't say he wants to win the WTF, he said he wants to qualify for it. Two different things. Why do you always have to let your own agenda interpret actual words which are very clear incorrectly?

He wants to win more slams. That is the only thing that will raise his legacy further at this point. Right now he says he has won enough slams because he is trying to lower his expectations which he is a master at. About a year ago he admitted that he would like the slam record. Which one are you going to believe?

That I agree with. While I'm not that worried about Djokovic since hard court are his thing. Murray should do well in that part of the season as well.
I'm a lot more worried about Federer. He's got a **** load of points to defend starting at Wimbledon until Basel.

- Final @Wimbledon
- Final @Canada
- Champion @Cincinnati
- SF @US Open
- Champion @Shanghai
- Champion @Basel

The odds he'll repeat or improve those results are slim. He could make the final again at Wimbledon with a good draw. Canadian open is played in Montreal this year and historically speaking, he's done better when it's in Toronto. I could see him winning Cincinnati again. US Open all depends of the draw and the weather as well, it's been one of his worst slam for the last couple of years. Shanghai is a coin toss, if he even plays it. Basel is just a 500, but I'd expect him to do well there again.

Apparently, he forgot to warn Dolgopolov.

Nadal would be stupid to show his cards at Queens.
Nadal had to practice his ace serve-
normal serve (baghdatis),
ace serve (14 aces vs tomic),
normal serve (monfils),
ace serve (9 aces in 1st set vs troicki),
normal serve (dolgopolov).
But wise not to show it at Queens, as everyone is now watching on the eve of Wimbledon.
He didn't spoil the surprise at the 2010 Canada and Cincy masters, wisely kept the big serve concealed until the US Open.

It will do very little for his resume. He wants to ultimately win a few more slams. He admitted it about a year ago. He is only trying to lower expectations and hence the pressure for himself.

You "warn" against plague and Typhus, not a player getting better.

In Nadal's case, it could be different though.

I actually think you believe this nonsense. He is a clever one that Nadal. :)
