I think what he means is this:

If player X loses to player Y, and then Player Y beats loses to player z in the next round, then player x is worse than player z as well. Nadal's opponent verdasco lost in the next round, and the player who beat him lost in the next round, and so on.

It is pretty easy to prove that there can only be one such player in the entire tournament. Proof is left as an exercise for the reader.

Then again, this is a terrible argument because players' levels change from match to match. Verdasco hit 100 winners in that match if I am not mistaken.
