Should be a fun fall season - all outcomes are in play (Nadal #1, Novak #1, split decision).

2016 was absolutely a co-#1 season, by the way, which I think will become consensus as it fades into tennis history. Murray being considered sole #1 that year was a byproduct of novelty and recency bias re: how he finished the year. Novak across the first half of 2016 was brilliant, and he had a creditable second half of the year (1 MS1000 title, a slam final, and YEC final). Whipped Murray in two GS title fights too.

The problem for Novak in 2018 is he did absolutely nothing across the entire first 6 months of the tennis calendar. Hard to make him Player of the Year because of a 4 tournament run, even if two of them are majors. He needs to - and probably will - do a little more in the fall to earn joint or sole Player of the Year. So does Nadal, by the way.

This season is both weak and fun in certain ways. Amazing that no young players have been able to force these guys off the top of the mountain - all three of Fed, Novak, and Nadal have been vulnerable or injured for long stretches, yet they are still top 3 in 12 month and race rankings.

So 2 slam titles + AO 4R, RG QF, and 1 Masters title is better than 1 slam title, AO QF, Wimbledon SF, USO SF, and 3 Masters titles?

Suppose if youre a casual fan , only slams matter.
You naively think Djokovic has exchanged his this year's results for those Nadal's results? Do not be crazy.

Nadal hasn't even lost before the QF of ANY event this year, so he is clearly still the best player in the world. Whether he ends up #1 or not depends on his health. I think people are underestimating just how well he has played this year, and how much he has fought. If he's fit I have no doubt he can still have a good end to the year.

Novak is the de facto #1, he won two slams. For me, he’s #1 for the year and should be regarded as such by everyone.

Can’t agree with this, at all. He needs to actually get to number 1 at years end to deserve it.

The rankings system is not just about slam performance and nor should it be.

All that said, I think Novak will be year end number 1. Doesn’t really have much to do to get it now.

Sure he does, he has to outperform Nadal in everything by at least a round or two. He just has to slip up once.

The most positive aspect of this thread is that Sureshs didn't start it, so there is still some hope for the YE #1.

Djokovic is de facto #1 in my mind too but he should still needs to do well in the rest of seasons to be regarded as clear YE#1.

My money’s on Djokovic. Rafa still has points coming off, Beijing and final of Shanghai etc. Novak looks the fresher of the two. Plus he likes this time of year more.

I’d be surprised if Rafa kept number one by years end. But I never count him out.

I'm inclined to agree, but just hope that Rafa is healthy enough to play well this fall.
As for "points coming off", I look at the Race to London, and what points they'll add. Can Novak earn more than 1,035 points more than Rafa does the rest of the year? Delpo and Fed are about 1,500 behind Novak, and 2,500 behind Rafa. They're in play also...if they get REAL hot.

Okay, now let me put it another way.

Win-Win
Win>>>SF
SF>QF
QF>4R

Not to mention the facts points for QFs should tell you they're not a meaningful gap. Basically you're trying to say two SF are equal to a victory.

Out of the 3 Masters Nadal won, 2 were weak draws. Just stop with Canada Masters for example. Novak's Cinci run more competition than Nadal's best in Italy.

Raonic, Cilic, Federer much better than Fognini, Novak (before comeback), Zverev. Novak also had defending champ in 4th Round too.
