Nadal withdraws from Cincy

I think he could have played Miami but chose to rest up and be fully fit for the clay court swing. In the past like in Paris masters last year he decided to play the tournament despite clearly being injured. He isn't making the same mistakes now on.

I repeat: Rafa's doctor did not allow him to play in Miami.

He re-tweaked his hip before Acapulco started. Then he preemptively withdrew from IW & Miami after that.

IW I understand, but Miami was like 3 weeks away at that point. He didn't even try to play it but was already practicing on clay while that tournament was going on. It was a (smart) decision to play it safe and not push it, just get ready for clay instead. But he couldn't even know for sure if he'd be too injured to play Miami at the time he pulled out.

It's clear where his priorities are. There's nothing wrong with that.
I thought the same thing with Miami. Technically he could've played but it would have just been a poor decision considering he hadn't completed a tournament in 6 months and may as well start preparing for the clay season.

Completely expected.

Roger skips Toronto, Rafa skips Cincinnati. The days when both of them automatically played back to back Masters are now well and truly gone.

They played 'automatically' when the Masters were mandatory for them. Now they have a complete exemption from the Masters 1000 commitment.

Lol.

He is pulling a Federer at an age when Federer was playing full schedule.

I want to see how the same people that criticized Federer for skipping clay will comment.

It will be very entertaining.

You have to keep in mind how different their style is, Rafa is more venerable to injuries than Roger, isn't he..

I am very sorry to announce that I won’t be playing in Cincinnati this year. No other reason than personally taking care of my body and trying to keep as healthy as I feel now. I am very thankful to my friend Andre Silva, Tournament Director of the Cincinnati tournament, who after speaking to him on the phone understood what I said and understand the situation. I am sure the tournament will be a success and I wish him and his team all the best. I am also sad for those amazing fans in Cincy and around who always gave me great support. I am sure I’ll see them next year and I am sorry I won’t be with them this year. Thanks for all the support as always.

Discuss or disgust.

Reasonable decision imo. Can rest for USO and try to defend his title.

Damn it

I am flying from Vegas to Cincy and was dying to watch the great one again !
I guess I am stuck with djoker again

Hmm. The Spanish media published information about Rafa almost daily. He couldn't play in Miami because the area that was injured needed to be kept rested while healing (weeks).

Hmm. You, Rafa devotee, are handing out fake news. Federer played 8/9 Masters in 2009, and only skipped Dubai because of a back injury and Halle because of the French Open.

HMMMMM

In 2009, Fed skipped the Shanghai Masters and the Japan Open (ATP 500, Tokyo).

He learned that in the QF he would face Djokovic, with whom he would lose again (in Cincinnati Rafa he had never defeated Djoker), H2H would get worse with the already defeated confidence in mutual matches with Djoker, so he would withdraw strategically from Cincinnati.

Wonder what the VB Group think of Rafa ducking Federer at Cincy? They said the same thing about Federer during the Clay Season, no?

Now that Rafa is skipping to preserve his body.....hmmmm
Fed didn't duck Rafa on clay this year cause he wouldn't have made one final on clay. Nadal reaching the Cinci final would mean 10 matches in 13 days. I think it would be negative implied odds for a deep run at the USO. Will be interesting to see what Tsitsipas does.

They probably discussed this at Wimbledon.

"Hey you playing the entire summer HC swing"
"Nah, don't think so"
"Me neither"
"You wanna, like, mess with the Tour"
"We both play different Masters and win both?'
"Si, si"

Smart decision from Rafa. Cincinnati has never been a good tournament for him and he is coming back off a great Wimbledon tournament so he is not short of matches. The best I have seen Rafa this year was Monte Carlo and that was after missing 3-4 months. Clearly this rest is good for his body and for his mental side.

Toronto this year plays like US Open, high bounce and medium pace. Cinci Plays nothing like US Open therefore makes sense to not play

Lol. Fail. Federer had 41 matches played before Cincinnati in 2013. Rafa has now played 43 in 2018 :p
Sir you should know that I am all up for Tennis_Hands fails but this is bullcrap right here. Federer in 2013 wasn't going deep in the tournaments so he had only 41 matches as he lost early but he played a full schedule with a lot of tournaments. I don't think that Rafa skipping Cincy is bad at all but get your facts right.

It's always the other fanbase for everyone, no?
I guess that’s what some would like to believe.

But seriously... kind of ends with GOAThood, right? Every barb has a counter. Particularly with the way this one was sewn up. :)

Fair. Good decision IMO. Boosts his USO chances and it's nice to see him making smarter scheduling decisions now.

Bad, bad decision. Still more than a fortnight before US with no tennis?

Didn’t play that great in Canadia and his tough draw at Cincy would have really told him where he’s at.

After the US he won’t have to play for another 6 weeks. Have a rest then!

Did well to win Toronto but almost sounds like he’s running from a potential defeat by Djoko or Fed just before US...

Played both Candy & Cincy in lead-up to all three previous USO titles.

Good scheduling move from Rafa finally....Feel like Federer has made some fantastic decisions in recent years with scheduling and looks Rafa is finally following him :) Should leave a bit more for post US Open....I wonder will he go home for the the next week....

Good idea. Rafa needs to save his energy for his 2018 US Open draw:

R1 - Q
R2 - LL
R3 - WC
R4 - Sela
QTR - Lajovic
SF - Daniel
F - Medvedev

Gonna be a brutal HC season

Nadal is also playing the Davis cup which is just after the US Open. It would be too much tennis for him. If he had played Cincy he would be playing 5 of the 6 weeks starting from Toronto, sensible decision at his age.
