Nadal withdraws from French Open

I am disappointed, not the least because the bio oassport theory's prediction continues to hold, but because it is a lost opportunity to witness yet another depletion of what once was endless stamina in five set matches against opponents ranked lower, as it happened in the prior two majors.

A scientific theory can't be proven right. Even if it explains everything and makes 100 correct predictions, it still just persuade more people to accept it. But it takes one wrong prediction to be proven wrong. How many people have been hoping this RG would blow the bio passport theory to pieces?

@Backspin1183 are you paying attention?

That's funny - he was Austrian the last time I saw him! ;)
How's that possible. How can you like Thiem AND Djokovic. Ones a boring robot and the other is actually fun to watch.

You can't have it both ways. Either stick to the likes of Djokovic, Murray, Berdych, Simon, and Ferrer OR pick Thiem, Wawrinka, Nadal, Federer, Tsonga, Monfils, Nishikori...i.e the entertaining ones.

Nadal has very strong clay court season, blazes through first two rounds of RG, IOC announces slew of failed doping tests, Nadal suddenly has debilitating wrist injury.
Wait what? Source?

I just read on MTF, WADA decided to retest (or retested?) blood samples of Olympics 2008. Is this true?

I think the samples are in the process of being retested, seeing as there are thousands of samples to test. I heard that some gold medallist high jumper was among the caught. Mostly athletes from Russia if I recall. Don't tell Bartleby!

There's a bunch of planets going backwards until about two weeks after the US Open, a week after my birthday.
So fully expect the Slams to be quite crazy this year. We've all already been talking about how weird & ridiculous it's been so far already ...
This is next level.
Do tell us more.
Planets aren't going backwards. They just look like they are going backwards at times when the earth is going backwards.

Just had a look at the impact if there's been any impact on tickets. Days that were previously sold out are not longer sold out. Only the men's SF and and men's F are sold out for their 'standard' tickets. Firstly Federer and now Nadal. Bad for the money men at RG.

Uhhh? How is it possible that a day which was sold out is not sold out anymore? It is not like you can get your money back from the organizers for a ticket

well not breaking news with Nadal: Operacion Puerto in Spain, former RG winner Noah then former Health French minister Bachelot claiming all over the press and radio the guy is doped
a bit like Lance Armstrong....

There is the option to resell your ticket(s) on the RG ticket page. Clearly a fair few people have now done this for the upcoming match days.

Ok, but you resell it to another potential buyer not to the RG organizers themselves? What I mean is that if you don't find an interested buyer, you're stuck with the ticket. And it doesn't make any difference for the tournament organizers who have already pocketed the money.

Tis true. Though I can't say I know exactly how the ticketing system works. All I know is, right now, you can pick up tickets for essentially any category tickets from tomorrow up until 2nd June.

Yes, no way RG is taking back tickets and refunding the ticket-holders. That would be financial suicide. Therefore from the organizer's financial point of view the event is still sold out. People may not show up or not be able to resell the tickets, but that's another story...

Talk about taking the gloss out of a potential Djokovic triumph. No Federer; no Nadal..
Well if those two guys are as washed up as many Fedal fans on this forum claim they are these days, why should it make any difference whether or not Novak beats them to win the trophy?

Which brings us back to the post you chose to comment on. At what point did I say it wouldn't count? Don't bother replying.
It really doesn't matter. If he wins all seven matches he'll deserve the title no matter who he beats to lift the trophy. Any talk about him having to beat Fedal to earn his victories is ridiculous when they're not even his biggest rivals anymore.

Jokeovich winning this trophy doesn't even count then. No Nadal, No Federer, Mugray, and the 0.5% odds that Wawrinka shows up.

The problem with you Djokovic fans is that you simply don't even acknowledge that it DOES matter that having two of the top 4 players out of a slam has a huge impact on its outcome. It DOES reduce his competition. It DOES impact the amount of effort he needs to expend in order to win the title. Just two weeks ago you guys were clammering about how Djokovic's match against Nishikori wore him out enough such that Murray could take advantage of it in the final. So what you guys are saying is that if he didn't face Nishikori or beat Nishikori handily... he would have had a better chance to win the Rome final.

So now you are saying that it doesn't matter that the guy who won this thing 9 times (and was on the rise) and Roger Federer aren't in the draw at all? You guys are absolutely ridiculous.

And when people point this out, all you do is whine... "But is isn't Djokovic's fault. If he wins his matches, his trophy is earned. Period." But admittedly, you are correct. It isn't his fault. And yes, if he wins the matches, he gets a trophy. But for you guys to not even admit that his trophy is somewhat empty given that his competition was lessened is REALLY bad. I mean REALLY REALLY bad. In fact, I think the thing that detracts the most from Novak Djokovic isn't his personality or playing style... it is his fans. You guys are pretty disgusting.

Margaret Court's numbers were overrated because she was playing against a watered down field due to lack of competition.
Graf's numbers are overrated because Monica Seles (stabbed when she was the #1 player in the world) wasn't present when she won six or seven of those slams.
Bobby Riggs' numbers are overrated because he played against a decimated field due to the war.
Jan Kodes won Wimbledon in 1973 because a huge number of the top competition boycotted it.
... and in 2016... Djokovic won that French Open because Rafael Nadal withdrew with injury, Roger Federer withdrew with injury and they significantly reduced the competition in an already incredibly weak era.

That is the way the book will be written. Sorry.

Wow, it doesn't seem like Djokovic's fans are disgusting, it seems you have a problem with your temper and some kind of OCD behavior, plus too much time on your hands. Are you a tennis historian, do you get paid for this?

My only irritation comes from the Djokovic fans who do not acknowledge that losing two of the greatest players of all time (who are still Top 5!) from the draw of the French Open matters when it comes to Djokovic winning this trophy. It is a disrespect of their legacy. It is a disrespect of the field. It is a disrespect to tennis. My god guys, show some class, some reverence, and some respect.

And yes, I'm sorry you don't like it, but such a response is disgusting. And no, I'm not a tennis historian and I'm not paid for posting on a message board.

Djoko has owned Nadal on any surface for a really long time now. His main rival currently is Murray and Murray is the one arriving at RG with multiple master finals on clay AND a win over Djoko, not Nadal. (Won't even comment on the Fed part as it is so laughable). Also, it is not Nadal who stood in Djoko's way at last year's RG. It is Wawrinka (and not for the first time). In a nutshell, Fed's absence at RG has 0 relevance to the tournament's outcome as Fed has been a non entity there for years. Nadal's is mitigated by the recent trend in their matchup (big loss for event overall but hasn't won a set off Djoko for many matches and would have been the underdog against Nole anyway).
There are plenty of contenders left for the title now other than Djoko, including Wawa, Murray and Nishi (+ a number of dark horses like Thiem, Ferret and Tsonga)
Your post is almost hilariously anachronistic. Fedal have not dominated tennis for years now and especially Nadal at slams. This is not 2009 anymore. You're almost a decade late for your analysis of "Fedal = tennis driving force". In terms of popularity, sure. People hang onto fallen idols long after their prime. In terms of outcome in main events, time to wake up from your slumber ;)

For Novak (and his fans) winning RG is like becoming President is for Hillary Clinton (and her supporters). It's been a frustrating 'so near yet so far' thing for so long that they and their supporters don't care anymore how, why and over whom.... just let it happen. Can't say I don't sympathize with their dread that the whole thing is somehow cursed and doomed to never happen.

A Murray Djokovic final is Hillary Clinton vs. Trump general election. Pick either getting shot or getting poisoned.

You have a point. But alternatively, aren't there losses that are worth more than others? Look at the 2013 SF. Djokovic could have won that one. He gave it a great effort, and it was really close.

So maybe you can forgive a "weak" championship for a previous "strong" loss to the champion?

One thing which bothers me is that Djokovic is too good on clay not to have a RG. Not that I am a fan or anything. On the other hand, I think he is not as good on grass as his results make him out to be.

In terms of "deserving", Djoko is the only active player outside of Nadal to have won all 3 clay masters (and all more than once at that! ). Add to that multiple RG finals. So if he is not "deserving" of an RG title, then I don't know who is. He's easily been 2nd best clay player of his era overall.

Hopefully Earth's mightest warrior, the heavyweight champion can finally win RG this year and do what many of us have been hoping to see someone accomplish. Hold all four slams at the same time.
