Nadal withdraws from WTF 2017

I reckon Rafa really wanted to play the WTF but also really wanted number one, so injured his knees playing paris and then tried to play this anyway. Would have been better putting all his eggs in one basket and either playing Paris for the ranking but calling time on his season after then, or skipping it to get fit for London

LOLLLL, Nadal chickens out to protect his H2H against Federer.

Are you seriously thinking the pro cares about protecting H2H counts? That's for the pathetic fans to worry about, not them. All they care is how they can perform their best, without taking a big toll on their bodies.

Nadal should have not played Paris and WTF in the first place.
Agree.

Yesterday I was all Bromance.
Tonight I'm asking Uncle Toni to tell Rafa it's over. Cause I don't want to have to speak to him again.

Rafa you've lost a notch of respect in my book. It's just me - a nobody fan, but..Not cool.

Uggh, but the Hopman cup doesn't give him points right? This is a glorified Exo.

Is that at the same time or could he play that and Brisbane.

This could be Fed's best/last chance.

If doesn't win AO, Miami and Indian Wells then Nadal is likely to gain ground before the clay court season (Dubai not withstanding)

The thing is that Brisbane would only get him three weeks at #1. While those are nothing to be sniffed at, the bigger prize would be a chunk more time at #1 by winning the AO and hoping that Nadal loses before the final. True about Indian Wells and Miami, especially as Djokovic is more likely to be back on form by March than by January, but Federer winning the AO without Nadal being runner-up would give Federer about six more weeks at #1.

Ok, seriously. Could Federer play a challenger? If he could, what would happen if fed passed Nadal after the trophy ceremony?

7.07 Play-Up Regulation (ATP Challenger Tour Tournaments)

A. Restrictions

1) Players positioned 1-10 in the Emirates ATP Rankings twenty-one (21) days prior to the first Monday of the ATP Challenger Tour tournament are prohibited from entering, accepting a wild card and/or competing in an ATP Challenger Tour tournament.

Nadal was always going to pull out. I think I posted he would a few days back.

Nadal really has little interest in wtf. He will say all the right things but his cheeky merry Christmas at end of pressed was a clue to his real feelings. He got YE1, satisfied the sponsors by turning up, now can have a nice holiday. Well deserved for the years best player.

No weaker than playing Paris just for one match and then quitting
Thanks for the lesson,

Today I learned that playing Paris, a masters event is a weak move. And he won 2 matches. Stay insecure little boy

Withdrawing from 2 consecutive big events. That's sketchy and feel for whoever missed out to compete.

Nobody missed out on this occasion - Pablo Carreno Busta will play the remaining two matches.

Anyway, how dare you offer a moral criticism of the greatest human of all time, a man who remains morally undefeated after almost a decade and a half on tour? ;)

Very sad but congratulations to Rafa on an incredible year.

In 2017 The warrior announced that he is officially back.

Looking forward to seeing him at 2018 Australian Open after some time giving those knees a well-earned rest.

His team didn't want him to play but he's stubborn again this time. Hopefully there will be no more "stubbornness" like this.

Once more Rafa has shown he is afraid of taking a beating like a man.

Lol, plays 65 matches but can't play two more ? Would he have done the same if No 1 was on the line ?

Every player carries a niggle here and there . This should be counted as a loss to Fed. 23-16 now

All those times Novak beat him , Rafa must have still thought he had a chance.

Does this come down to Thiem? I like the guy... but I'm thinking not securing #1 might in large part get chalked up to him choking the two sets to love lead against Delpo at USO! After winning those first two sets, 6-1 and 6-2, he had numerous chances to win. Then Fed thew up the clunker v. Delpo. Would he have done the same v. Thiem? Hmm.

Do you think his interest would peak if it was played on clay (as he keeps hinting it should)?

Federer is not playing Brisbane, he’s playing the Hopman Cup. Federer did everything he could to keep from taking over the no. 1 ranking and you guys are still find ways for him to be no. 1.
What does your statement even mean? Why would he not want to be number one?

The physical toll and the amount of the tournaments needed to maintain the no. 1 that’s what my statements means. Federer doesn’t want to play that many tournaments. No clay and no. 1 ranking.
He absolutely wanted it before the USO outcomes wrecked the dream. And if the opportunity presents itself, he should totally go for it. What a milestone it would be.

It's true. I actually believed the informations about him being fully healthy. That's how much it would have meant for him to win this. The fights he showed in the end stages of that match against Goffin were the classic Rafa refusing to believe it is over

The stubbornness and the warrior will be back for more at 2018 Australian open :) - Look forward to your predictions for how he will go next year (along with Roger, Novak, Andy, Stan and others.... maybe even Nishi and Rao  )

Federer the same for skipping clay.
Fedal partisanship is really disgusting.

I watched all of his practice sessions and I knew what I saw, despite all the strong talk from him and Moya.

Bold: That's very well put. But it's also because he already thought before the match that it might very well be his last match of the season, so he decided to give it a fight. He said he fighted a lot, but didn't enjoy playing and already decided that he would pull out of London after the match was over, win or lose.

So it's not really about him refusing to believe it's over. But I agree, he's stubborn again and should have called it off after SH. Now just hope he didn't aggravate those poor knees and will recover in time for Brisbane (or Abu Dhabi before that but I hope he will skip it - no sense playing any exo at times like this IMO.)

The rest: Thank you. I need a break from tennis until... tomorrow. We'll talk about them again very soon. Np talking about Nishi and Raonic. I actually like Raonic as well (and like him more because of all the thrashing on here) and found it very interesting that you are a fan of his. :D

Lol keep trying to act like Nadal was the better player this year lol

0-4

The h2H with Federer does not mean Federer was the better player. Every Year Federer has been number one Nadal has had the H2H advantage.

However I somewhat agree that while Nadal has deserved his number one based on winning more points, it's such a slim margin that it's debateable who was the better player this year. Both players have a shout, but I can't say Nadal loses his claim because of the H2H
