Nadal writes off 2020 season. Looks forward to 2021.

“I hope we can return before the end of the year but unfortunately, I don’t think so,” the Spaniard told El Pais.

“I would sign up to being ready for 2021. I think 2020 is practically lost. I hope we can start up again next year, I really hope that’s the case.”

The French Government have already told the French Open that it can't go ahead with fans, so I don't see that going ahead. Can't see the US Open going ahead either with the US having the highest number of cases / deaths in the world and Trump's ineptitude causing the virus to spread all over the place.

Nadal is a natural pessemist.

I believe The French Open will happen this year. They seem to be the slam most open to doing it without a crowd. And the UFC just pulled off a crowd-free event last night. That is the template the French Open will be using.

So Nadal will still be practicing.

LOL!

We are only in May, and several sports are already finding solutions to re-open with increased Social Distancing measures (like the UFC, an actual contact sport which will be taking place weekly from now. The British Football Premiere League are willing to restart in the next few weeks, even if the games are behind closed doors.

With all this information at hand, you are telling me that the French Open won't be able to manage a way to hold their tournament in FIVE MONTHS time, in a non-contact sport? LOL!

If the UFC can now hold weekly cards relatively safely, you really think several other sports won't see that as a greenlight to hold some of their events? Especially in non-contact sports like Tennis. If a tennis tournament is willing to sacrifice having a crowd, they can easily hold it relatively safely. Especially since it is a non-contact sport.

Someone is delusional in this conversation, but it isn't me. Everyone wants to bring things like sports back, even if it means testing all the players and having no crowds. The way things are starting to unfold, I say there is an 80% chance the French Open will take place later in the year.

I guess the dream of Nadal not getting to #20 this year was nice while it lasted though.

Bwahahaha oh yeah, it's absolutely deadly here in the US right now. You walk outside, you drop dead. All because of Trump not banning travel fast enough.

Meanwhile, China has handled the virus beautifully, reporting only ONE coronavirus death in the past TWO WEEKS combined. How great are they?

Move USO to China.

Dude, if the RG does happen and Thiem or Djokovic win it. This won't look good on you.

LOL!

99.9% of people have Nadal as the presumptive favorite if RG takes place, as per usual. He'll be the bookies favorite, by far.

How will it look bad on me, if somehow a rival competitor upends all expectations and wins RG instead of Nadal? Everyone else is thinking what I'm thinking. That 5 sets on clay, with Nadal in good shape will be incredibly difficult to beat. Especially as Nadal adjusts better to clay than anyone alive, and there will probably be no warm-up clay tournaments for other players to get into their groove on clay.

I'm not making some ridiculous, unlikely prediction here. If Nadal doesn't win the event, it'll be regarded as an upset.

If RG takes place , this year's RG will have way way too many variables to count for, players without regular matchpractice, no crowd/towel environment e.t.c

Pro players heavily depend on rhythm, this kind of conditions might seem insignificant but can hurt players, especially someone OCD like Rafa, heck it will affect every one.

This is not a regular clay season where Rafael has a lot of match practice and confidence under his going into RG. Rafael is confidence player.

Also even though all pro must be training , it probably won't be as effective as without the lockdown situation. Some will be in better shape but some in worse when the tour returns.

How many actually have a quality hitting partner even?

If it is held, this RG will be very unpredictable.

Yeah, even after typing all that.... Nadal will still be the consensus favorite.

And Nadal has a whole freaking Tennis Academy of his own to train in. He'll be better prepared than anyone else, in terms of training facilities and partners
