Nakashima and Brooksby

Nakashima with a 4 and 4 loss to Tiafoe. Brooksby beat Karen Khachanov 6-0, 6-3 on Saturday and will play Tsitsipas tonight.

i think he is likely to make Tsitsipas play a very painful match

not sure I’m quite willing to predict the victory, since at this point in their careers I think Tsitsi could still hit through him if his A game is firing

It will be interesting for sure. I'm not sure that Tsitsipas hits flat enough to hit through Brooskby since Brooksby's shot tolerance is probably his best asset. I think Stefanos will have to serve well to win.

also these court level Brooksby-Tsitsipas highlights are great

Brooksby hits a hell of a ball off the ground, seemingly just as dangerous when you stretch him wide as when he has time to set up

and his serve stats were bonkers in this match:
he made 85% of his first serves
and when he did let Tsitsipas get a look at a second serve, he won 70% of those points

I also love how easily he brushed away Tsitsipas's sour post-match comments
essentially 'oh yeah? you cannot figure out what is so special about my game? cool story, that's what I shoot for.'

That's his single greatest differentiator it seems, his shot tolerance and ability to hit offensive shots from defensive positions. We'll see how his career develops, but that one skill at least seems destined to be elite.

looks like Brooksby might have met his match in Norrie, so (while putting the rally cap on) I'll assume his Indian Wells run ends here and go ahead and say...

not so fast. JB is figuring Norrie out

i'm hoping for the jinx with my early pessimistic comment :)

but Brooksby indeed never gets flustered by losing a set, seems to always think he's capable of adjusting as the match goes on more than his opponent, and most of the time he seems to be right

boy would he like that 0-40 back to go up 2-0 in the second, however

alright, 2-0 in the second after five break points, and now we have a match on our hands

fun stuff, might have to catch the result tomorrow though, getting late here in the East

Tough match, I feel like Norrie out Brooksbied Brooksby but still good result for Jenson.
Former Horned Frog vs a former Baylor Bear. I think Norrie's ability to get free points on his serve was huge. Norrie will be moving into the top 10 soon so no shame in losing to such a quality opponent. It will be interesting to see how Norrie does vs Alcarez.

Norrie's game is pretty fascinating

usually I find all those IBM match stats, RPMs, etc pretty useless info - but I think in his case it was a pretty good point to be made about how difficult it is to get in a rhythm and attack a guy that's throwing heavy balls to you off his forehand, then knifing the flattest backhands in the top-50 at the lower limits of your strike zone anytime you attack that wing

and his movement is world class for his height - taking a page out of Medvedev's book, even if he's a few inches shorter

he's definitely not done rising either - despite a bad AO performance, one win away from #10

Props to both Norrie and Brooksby scaling the heights they've achieved to date with games that are both far from the norm. Neither seems to have the typical go to weapon common among their peers. Both leverage to great success excellent movement, tactics and problems solving mid-match, while incorporating an unusual combination of shots, spin (or flat BH Norrie) and angles. I can only guess lots of junior players are inspired by them.

Can't wait for their next encounter. My guess is it will be much closer than yesterday, I'm picking Brooksby then.

Whatever happened to JJ Wolf?
Got injured is back playing again. Made the round of 16 in Acapulco 500, in the Phoenix Challenger now. Beat #56 Mussetti yesterday, plays Verdasco today in the quarters.

Wolf on the other hand has a cannon for a serve so he will crack the top 35.

crack 35? Really. He was 120 after the 2020 USOpen and currently at #209

He had a good tournament at IW, came through qualifiers and lost to RBA 7-6 in the third in the round of 64. He beat Musetti in straight sets yesterday, 63, 62, in a challenger.

yeah, what atatu said

Bob, nice attempt at distracting from your horrendous Brooksby call, but Wolf back to playing good tennis the last few weeks, absolutely hammered Musetti yesterday, beat Gaston the prior week, beat Sonego and Kevin Anderson the tournament before that, currently 175 in the world and rising in his post-surgery comeback year

The US certainly has a lot of depth. Hopefully one of them rises up to consistent top 10 level. JJ seems to have lost some of the weight he put on when he first came back from injury, he's looking pretty good.

Bob rightfully sometimes tries to strike back at me for predicting JJ would have a better career than Kudla, since I needle him endlessly about his Brooksby call

the difference is I’ve already admitted several times that I was probably too aggressive / hopeful in that prediction, though it’s maybe still possible - and he’s never backed off his arrogant ‘I saw Brooksby from the front row and he has no future’ in so many words (the exact words can be found 700 times in this thread!) comment that got destroyed the same week he uttered it, and only gets more wrong with every passing week

maybe some day he’ll admit to missing the entire dart board on his Brooksby call

I like how he acts like he doesn't know what a low ranked player is doing, then suddenly quotes their ranking. He knows every match he's played. OSU guy, you know he knows.

Wolf just straight-setted Verdasco which brings him up to 166

don’t start to get nervous Bob, next year or two might be very good for the Wolf man, closing back in on his pre-surgery peak ranking

I had a good laugh when I saw that JJ plays Kudla next - Kudla won their first meeting, then JJ won both times they played in 2021 - maybe tomorrow JJ goes 3-1 vs Kudla and starts chipping away at his 3M career prize money deficit - let’s go!

but to be fair, I grew up playing / training near Kudla and almost always sought out his qualies matches during the years I attended W&S Masters - once I think partially contributing to a Benoit Paire meltdown when I was annoyingly cheering for Kudla between every point, maybe I give myself too much credit but many a glare and French mumbling were directed my way while Kudla took him down 4,4 in the final round of qualies in 2015 - so I wouldn’t really mind either of them winning

from what I can tell, Kudla is a good dude. props to the DMV.

Both are just 20 years old.
At that age, have they finished their undergraduate studies? Or, are they still studying? They haven't dropped out, have they?

If those above questions have been answered already, I apologize. I've not had time to read through all the pages of this thread.

JJ Wolf is so good that he lost to Jesper De Long who is currently ranked #168, LOL....

While pounding his desk with his fists

another routine victory, 4&4, and Wolf has qualified for Miami

would be nice to get the right draw and a few more points out of this week, currently #158

here's hoping he gets slot 69 or 70, against another qualifier in round of 128 with fognini awaiting in round of 64
or slot 118, against the wildcard shang with sonego awaiting

brooksby has a reasonably nice draw - coria, then basilashvili (who he has previously lost two tight matches against, one in the USO second round in 2019), then RBA

Nakashima won yesterday

Brooksby and Wolf won today

Brooksby has some growing up to do - his return, his backhand, his tennis mind, his fight are all great ways to emulate Djokovic - being careless re: those on the court around you is probably not the way to emulate him

Coria wanted him defaulted after he sent a racquet skidding into the feet of a ball boy, and I think that default would have been totally reasonable

I'll be curious to see how Nakashima does against Tiafoe. He lost a close match at Indian Wells last week, but he might have learned from that match. Case in point he lost to Mannarino in Del Ray in three sets, then beat him 62, 76 at IW.
