Putting Safin aside, nalbandian vs fed is a hard one.

Fed is probably the greatest player ever overall, but nalbandian is, to me, up on Mt.Olympus with him. In terms of touch, and court awareness, shot making, he's as good and I would say better than fed.

Like the triangle of combustion though, all the elements have to be there to get flame, and nalbandian was missing self belief deep down. He couldn't find a way to close big matches down, because it wasn't a plausible reality to do so in his mind deep down, so he'd flounder. Fitness is also an obvious one too.

But even with these issues, if you took both at their prime but took away fedbots serve +1, and gave him a serve like Nalbandian's, I'd pick nalbandian to win.
You talk as though Serve is an illegitimate shot in tennis.

As a big Nalbo fan, this thread is less about praising the man and more about trying to put down Fed.

If you truly appreciate the man, you'd have to accept that his effort + mentality did not do justice to his capability.

Even so, one of the finest ball strikers I've seen on his best day; IMO Still not good enough to pip RF in any department. The man himself says so.

Not illegitimate, but it has made height the major issue because of the change in the game. Way back when anyone could be attacked on the 2nd serve, which is why when you look at stats comparing even the 90s with now you see 2nd serve stats are dominated by today's players but 2nd return stats were dominated by the 90s players, and even by the 90s those stats were higher. That's why shorter players no longer have a chance. Nalbandian at his peak was an amazing returner, almost Djokovic like (as good as most of Djokovic's good years.) Check 2005. But his serve stats were too low to make up for the weakness returning. That's what I hate about the modern game. Too serve dominant.
