First off just want to say how happy i am for Nalby's victory. I really hope that will be the watershed for Nalby just like how Lendl defeated McEnroe at the French and kickstarted his career.
I have been waiting a long time for Nalby to realise his potential and he may start fulfilling it in 2006. For all those detractors that say Nalby is a pusher or 'Fat' and beat an exhausted Fed let me educate you all.
Firstly, Nalby has a big a forehand as Fed and was not afraid to go to the Fed forehand. Thats right? He went to the place that experts say you should never go to and hit constant winners wide to the Fed FH. Is that pushing? Nalby also hit more BH winners both DTL and crosscourt. As you may know the DTL BH is one of the most high risk shots in the game as the ball goes up the highest part of the net. And yet Nalby went for that shot on big moments in the matcg and scored more times than he missed. Is that pushing? Nalby also hit numerous approach shots and was at around 15/18 at the net. Is that pushing?
Wherever you check the stats, whether its returns or outright winners Nalby was leading and Fed even accepted that he (Nalby) played better and definitely deserved to win.
Secondly, if you saw the match and other Nalby matches you will see how fresh he was in the fifth compared to Fed and he also came back from two sets down to beat Murray at Wimbledon so i hope this stupid myth about his weight is finally dispelled. He is just big boned. Period!
And finally regarding Fed's fitness let me say this. Fed chooses to play tournaments and therefore if he suffers from fatigue that's his poor judgement and he can make no excuses. Furthermore Nalby was on holiday and stopped practising for a few weeks and was not even hitting a ball as he was fishing in Argentina when the call came to play at the very last minute as a masters cup. The point being he was just as ill prepared as Fed was if mot more as Fed had a lot more time to prepare for his final tournament of the year. Also it commonly accepted that if Player A beats player B and player b suffers with fatigue it's usually attributed to player A working player B all over the court; just like Nalbandian did to Fed. Agassi used to do this all the time hence the moniker 'The Punisher'. Well Nalby punished Fed for two sets and lost both and still had the character and mental resolve to win in 5 and come back from Fed serving for the title. Give Nalby the credit, only champions do things like that. No excuses or 'ifs' and 'buts' Nalbandian may be the Rossetta stone the ATP has been looking for.
