Name miss-pronunciation

I have a friend who, back when Nadal first came onto the tour, used to call him "Ralph Nadel" (last name sounding like 'cradle'). Now every time I see Nadal's name written anywhere I automatically think "Ralph".

What are some other ridiculous tennis name miss-pronunciations???

Where did post 1 go ?

Cilic gets Miss Pronounced quite a bit. Or he gets quite a bit of Miss Pronounced, i forget which.

Its a Miss Terry to me how people can pronounce Đoković in different ways including Joke-avich, and Choke-avich.

Isn't Miss Pronounced a contest for young women hoping to become administrative assistants? I think it's run in conjunction with the Miss Spelled contest.

"In spanish we pronounce"
We? Spanish is my native language. Where do you think I'm from? ;)

Ok we have 2 spaniards with a different way to spell nadal's name.....Lol
maybe folks from different parts of spain pronounce the name differently .....Can we have someone from Mallorca telling us how they spell it Lol:)

Michael Stich. Never heard that pronounced right - certainly not by an English-speaking commentator (can't do it properly myself, either).

From an article I found about it..

"(His name) brought much media conversation later, including one theory that you weren't pronouncing it correctly unless you were spitting on yourself. Also, after somebody sneezed three times, Hubert Mizell of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times thanked the sneezer: "So that's how you pronounce it," Mizell said."

It's Jock-o-vich. Not Joke-o-vich. Most people got it wrong in that thread.

(Is it better to be a jock or a joke? Novak is a little bit of both :) )

Most people pronounce Wozniacki as Wozniaky. It's actually woz-nee-ats-kee.

You have an interesting signature....in Hindi........

It's Wimbledon........not Wimbleton. There are still a lot of people in the US including sportscasters in local TVs saying Wimbleton.

Nope, still wrong; in Spanish we pronounce it "Ra-Figh-El."

no its not, i know mine is the one seeming furthest off but its zah fah el nah dahl, if there is a r at the beginning of a spanish word it is pronounced differently than an r in the middle of the word, if the r is at the beginning it is pronounced like an "erre" the erre is a written letter(written rr) that was removed from the spanish alphabet as an individual letter in the 90s though the pronounciation rules remain

I've heard Martina Navratilova pronounce it de-YOH-ko-vitch. Since she's originally from that part of the world, I'll take her word for it.

My mom calls him Jock itch:D

Speaking of jockitch, my all-time favorite mispronunciation was Jim Lampley during HBO's coverage of Wimbledon some time back calling Jelena Dockic - Jelena Jockitch. He just kept going like he said nothing wrong....... :)

According to my recently acquired knowledge of the German language, Stich is pronounced thus: the st= sht and the ich (which also means 'I')= pronounce the 'i' like the 'i' in the English word 'bit.' Then add to that the first part of the English word 'hew' without the 'yoo' sound. As you probably already guessed, we don't have that 'ch' sound in English. Wow, there's got to be an easier way to explain that.

I think, however, that the 'ich' is pronounced differently in the southern part of Germany. Not sure, though. Any native German speakers want to weigh in on this?

In Polish her name would be voz-nee-ats-kee...although she's not Polish, is she?

Patrick McEnroe pronounces Nadal like it would rhyme with "a pal"

Multiple pronunciations I've heard...

Kooz-NET-sova/ Kooz-net-SOVA
Duh-MEN-chuva/ Deh-men-tee-AY-vuh
Suh-FEE-nuh/SAFIN-uh
EH-nuh/Eh-NUH/ "HEH-nin!" (Johnny Mac!)
Sill-ich/Chill-ich

ATP site:

Pronounced: ra-FAY-el nah-DAHL

I don;t think AG and the other person were giving different pronunciations, Its just that they are trying to put it phonetically for us, and their representation differs. I go with "Fah". Since an "el" comes later, figh-el is the same.

NO SIR, the problem is that DJO is not the correct way of writing it. It is Đoković - so there's really no J/Y there.

In related news, Pamela Anderson won the Miss Pronounced contest in Mississippi last night.
