The 'Jock' is pretty unfounded. The Serbo-Croatian pronounciation is roughly 'Jo-Ko-Veech' (I'm Serbian), so it isn't Jock-o-vitch . . . . yeah, I know names are anglicized, but still, that's just so far off, 'Jo-Ko-Vitch' makes more sense.

But it's not Joke-o-vich. It doesn't have the "ou" as in "joke" sound. I'm not sure exactly how to anglicize it. Joh-koh-vich maybe.

I am always annoyed when Jim Courier is commentating for Australian Open in Channel 7 Australia. He talks too much and when he says "Andy Murray" he says it " AND - DEE - MRRR - REE " instead of "UN - DEE - MAAR - REE (that's how I often hear it in BBC tv anyway).

Right now, both my English and Serbian are slipping.

Nemoj previse da se upustas u rasprave. Ovde ima jedno 3-5 Djokovicevih fanova i preko 50 Federerovih koji ne mogu da smisle Noleta (osim nekoliko izuzetaka). Ako se previse raspravljas, verovatno ces se iznervirati i onda ces biti banned. hehe

You got the pronounciation right...most commentators don't.

No, i am not getting into the fray of how to pronounce his name, i dont think i can put it in English. ;-) (if i can even exactly remember).

The DJ is more like ZH from what i remember.

Since someone mentioned Murray, was it the AO or TMC or where where they call him MOOOOOOOOOOO-RAY, and they really drag the MOOO as long as they can.

Yeah, Czechs, Serbs....couple of Slavs with good serbs, earning nice pay Czechs.

I generally like to pronounce names close to what they'd sound like in the house of the player (i.e. Shar-RAP-ova rather than Share-a-POV-uh...*****-o-veech rather than Joke-a-vtich....Guy-el-Mo~feece rather than Gail Mo-phil's), but if you go overboard on that, you're Bud Collins and someone makes a thread about how annoying THAT is.

D'yoke o vich is as likely to give you the right pronounciation for a non Serb as anything else

:) No, I'm from Puerto Rico (but have lived in US for a looong time), but I can speak Polish. I took a year in college and expose myself to it everyday (reading articles, listening to radio). I don't get to speak it much, though. I'm an avid language lover, generally speaking.

I'll have to give Gorecki a listen. I have to admit, however, that, while I respect classical composers and have been exposed to the music (through my dad...the dude walks around in a Beethoven T-shirt), I don't listen to it much. I'm eager to change this, though. I do love Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique (1st movement?). One of my favorite pieces of music ever. My only extended exposure to classical music has been a music appreciation class I took in college:oops:...great class. I thought almost every piece of music we listened to was fantastic in its own way.

i am an avid music consumer and my options are mainly Classic, Jazz, Chill out electronic,world music (mainly mali and celtic) and much indie rock... and all combinations you can imagine for these styles....

you should listen to Gorecki for sure, start with simphony number 3 (sorrowful songs) and move form that on...

i also love classic flamenco guitar (andres segovia... wow.. gotta go listen to asturias by isac albeniz played by Andres segovia)

Oh, I will most definitely have to listen to your suggestions. Classical guitar is magnificent. I have fond memories of my mother playing some beautiful music on her guitar...I'm sure Andres can top her playing :). As for Indie Rock, why, that's one of my favorite genres...although my most favorite is instrumental music of all kinds, bands like Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, The Octopus Project, Pelican. I could go on all day with music :shock:.
In fact, I might start a thread tomorrow in Odds and Ends...Lifted's personal music recommendations!

Heh, I think, but am not 100% positive, that Gretzky is either an eastern Slavic variant (although I'm not sure of which one) of Górecki (Polish being classified as a western Slavic language) or an English corruption (this is me guessing wildly here).

If anyone is interested, here is the etymology:

Gorecki
Usage: Polish
Extra: Statistics
Means "a person from Górka, Poland". Górka is a town in Poland whose name was ultimately derived from the Slavic gora "mountain".
