Remember when Sharapova moved to the United States at like age 8 and still represented Russia for her whole career? But Haitian/Japanese Naomi Osaka does it and people criticise. The hypocrisy is staggering. Let’s not act like players haven’t left foundries to train in others only to represent their birth country.
I think people made fun of Sharapova too. The key difference is that social media and places like this were nowhere near as prevalent when she was actually a regular fixture atop the game, so you saw so much less of it.

Also, there is a bit of a difference between being 7 or 8 like Sharapova was, and being 3 or whatever Osaka was.

Also, also, her whole heritage is that much more complex than Sharapova's given her dad is basically a naturalized American anyway, isn't he?

Also, also, also she seems more popular with regular folk so maybe they're more adamant to adopt her. :-D

Honestly just sounds like there’s a bunch of “also’s” as why it was ok for one but not another. I note the difference in age but you think Osaka learned so much in that 4 or 5 years while aged 3-8 that should make her American and not Japanese? Like you want to blame her for that?

I don't personally care about it. At some point my wife and I will be ex-pats living abroad, and that isn't anything against 'Merica that some folks get their chonis bunched about.

What will be interesting, the choice will change her visa status and taxes for anything owned and done in the US. Interesting to see how that goes.

You have been talking about moving to Italy for a long time now yet you are still here.
