Naomi Osaka gets sued by former tennis coach

After reading the Sun Sentinel article, it's hard to feel sympathetic to Osaka's dad - even if all the "no money" situation was real at the time.

It seems like there's a pattern of coach-dumping and not honoring promises to coaches who have helped them financially by waiving coaching fees and going out of their way to help them.

While the contract may be forged (who knows), it seems like stories from past coaches in the Sun Sentinel support the claim. Let the court decides.

Show me the money Lennay!! As Chris would say!! I needs my 20% with the quickness yo or we go to court and get mo money! $$$

I think Pete Sampras old coach Pete Fischer was asking for money too after he won Wimbledon. Fischer had some issues and wanted credit for making him a star. He was an influence but he had other coaches and mentors as well.

I'll say this, the coach who signed that deal is a moron. The agreement was presumably signed by the father, not Naomi herself, and her winnings are not his money to give. Plus she was underage so cannot enter a contract. The coach is screwed.

I wonder if the father knew this before making the agreement and knew that he would never have to pay a cent?

Now if Naomi is smart she'll fire the father from any official position forthwith so that he has no financial connection. That might not even be necessary but in my view they're going to be able to get away with paying nothing

A deal's a deal.

In most states (I assume all) a contract with a minor is generally voidable at the option of the minor until they reach a certain age.

FL has a process whereby a coach-minor/parent contract may be approved by the FL courts and, if approved, then you avoid certain issues such as disability of a minor. This purported contract would have had issues being approved. ;)

“A contract made by a minor or made by a parent or guardian of a minor, or a contract proposed to be so made, may be approved...[however] No contract shall be approved, if the term during which the minor is to perform or render services or during which a person is employed to render services to a minor, including any extensions thereof by option or otherwise, extends for a period of more than 3 years from the date of approval of the contract."

A lot of her money comes from Japanese endorsements - cup noodle for eg.

Also eventually her Dad got the Japanese to pay for her training. Wonder if reporters are going to look into that eventually....

US citizens are taxed on income from anywhere in the world and can be sued for that income in US courts

I guess she is fine since she is 100% Japanese. Silly me.

That sounds like one of many legal changes she could make to protect her position.

It seems to me that parents should finance their children's education only if they get a 20% cut as well.

It is so sad that Osaka can not cope with all of this better.

First she said 'It wasn't about the money' when she fired Bajin.
Now, it is about the money. Well, which one is it? Bajin has brought her where she is right now. Then she said 'he doesn't do anything for me'. 'He just talks'.. Well, that is his job for God's sake.

Then she gets angry with the media. More excuses. Spoiled brat. I'm sorry, I liked her so much ... this is just silly. Deal with it behind the closed door with your family. Grow up.

Wow. It’s really starting to unravel a bit for Naomi isn’t it? She just seems like yet another of those players that comes with a ton of distractions, whether that’s family or her ridiculous popularity in Japan.

It's clear that Naomi doesn't owe any money. It's possible her father does if the contract is legitimate. If he still has no money even with a legitimate contract then the former coach will get 20% of nothing.

Wow really not good for PR if there’s any truth in what the former coach is claiming. They shouldn’t have let it gone all the way to court in the first place, whatever the situation might have been. Unless the coach made up the whole story and intends to damage Naomi’s reputation. But why would a former coach do that? However you look at it, it tells you something about the parents/family.

How does Naomi Osaka not honouring a contract that she never entered into tell us anything about her?

Same thing happened to me at the USO with DelPo and his ankle. He seemed like a good guy so I gave him the money and now when he sees me he runs in the opposite direction. :(

Nadal hit me up for $50 at IW, said he needed a new knee brace and would pay me back after his semifinal. Never saw him again.

At least Nishi didn't hit you guys up....he could bankrupt anyone with his medical needs.

2 people can write up and sign a contract saying anything

Doesn’t make it legal

Good luck getting a court anywhere in the western world to uphold that a man can endenture his 13 year old daughter into someone’s servitude forever against her will and without her consent

Seems every coach that worked with juniors has this kind of story. Macci and the Williams. The notoriety of having coached a pro as a jr. must be worth something.

Did you read my post? I said it tells something about the parents

Parent singular perhaps given the alleged contract is with her father. It could easily be some gold digging by the former coach. How hard is it to draw up a bogus contract to try and extort money?

Google it.
She wasn't smashing her racquet but she was not happy about questions regarding her coach. She tried to be cute. It didn't work out. :notworthy:
I did Google it before asking. Couldn't find her attacking the media, or any reaction at all to these recent stories.

Agree that her presser about Bajin was weird and hypocritical.
